  • Patent number: 8857898
Abstract: A collision management system comprising at least one of a guiding-bracket and a catch configured to inhibit forward movement of an under-hung spare-tire during a collision. The guiding-bracket may connect to and extend downward from a floor, or sprung-mass component, of the vehicle. The spare-tire may contact the guiding-bracket during a collision substantially inhibiting further movement, deflecting it downward away from the vehicle, deflecting it toward a suspension component, and/or deflecting it toward the catch. The catch may be connected to and extend upward from a suspension component. The catch may also inhibit spare-tire forward movement, may puncture the tire of the spare-tire, and may pull the spare-tire downward with the movement of the suspension component to which it is attached during the collision.

Abstract: When front side members are bent by a front-rear-directional collision of a vehicle, the front side members come in surface, not point, contact with an adjacent member in the vehicle by a contact surface formed at a contact portion. Accordingly, the front-rear-directional collision load is stably transmitted to a member, such as an adjacent engine, such that it is possible to efficiently improve the effect of distributing and reducing the load in a collision. Further, since the bent front side members stably come in surface, not point, contact with the adjacent member, such as the engine in the vehicle, it is possible to decrease the possibility of unexpected fracturing of the front side members.

Abstract: A vehicle having a structural bed configured to serve as a structural load-bearing member is provided. The structural bed extends rearward from a cab structure of the vehicle and includes a core layer. First and second outer layers flank the core layer and span substantially the entirety of the core layer. The first and second outer layers are composed of a material that has a higher strength than the core layer. The thickness of the core layer may be at least approximately 10 times greater than each of the thicknesses of the first and second outer layers, respectively. The composite structural bed may be integrated with mass-efficient structures to produce an efficient load-bearing structure for a vehicle.

Abstract: A lift gate having a deformable section which allows the lift gate to deform rather than break during a low speed impact event. The lift gate has a deformable section located between an inner panel and an outer panel. The deformable section is able to deform during a low speed impact event against the outer panel, thereby preventing the inner panel from receiving any of the impact. This allows the inner panel to be significantly more rigid than the outer panel and the deformable section, and, therefore, provides the necessary structural support for the lift gate while withstanding collisions on the Impact Zone.
