End Gates Patents (Class 296/50)
  • Patent number: 5518287
Abstract: A tail gate opening and closing device for a vehicle. In order to prevent earth and sand from being attached on the inner wall surface of the tail gate after discharging a load, a rotary plate is provided such that when the tail gate is closed it has a free end portion in contact with the inner wall surface of the tail gate. When the tail gate is accommodated below the floor surface in an open position, the free end portion of the rotary plate is supported at the upper end edge of the tail gate and is pivotally affixed to the rear end portion of the floor surface of the bed.

  • Patent number: 5393115
Abstract: This invention relates to an alternative device for a tailgate to a pickup truck. The device includes a horizontal beam assembly to be installed across the open back of a pickup truckbed having a cylindrical pivot hinge on one end and a handle-latch at the other end. The pivot hinge can be installed at any height along the open truckbed so as to provide a functional impediment to loss of cargo depending on the size of cargo carried by the operator of the vehicle. The beam assembly can be raised or lowered to accommodate the size of cargo carried in the truckbed. The beam assembly is wired electrically for a rear brake lamp which would be connected to the wiring for the truck tail lights. The beam feature is an improvement over a full tailgate as it allows for the flow of air out of the truckbed to reduce drag and increase gas mileage.

  • Patent number: 5340184
Abstract: A pickup truck tailgate construction is provided which enables the tailgate to be used either (1) in customary manner, with the bottom of the tailgate in hinged relation with the after end of the bed so that the tailgate can be pivoted between vertical closed position and horizontal open position or (2) in a modified fashion, in which the top of the tailgate is pivotally arranged so that the bottom of the tailgate can be positioned several inches rearwardly from the after end of the bed. The rectangular gap between the bottom of the tailgate and the adjacent after end of the bed and the triangular gaps between the opposite ends of the tailgate and the adjacent after ends of the side walls are spanned by correspondingly shaped mesh panels which allow free flow of air therethrough. Improved fuel efficiency and handling of the vehicle results from the aerodynamically enhanced construction.

  • Patent number: 4782674
Abstract: A locking arrangement for use on an enclosure which enclosure has an opening and a roll-up door to close the opening, automatically locks the door when it is closed. The arrangement includes a striker member mounted on one side of the door to define a striker path when the door is moved upwardly or downwardly. A lock mechanism includes a dog and means for biasing the dog to removably extend into the striker path. When the door is moved downwardly, the striker will force the dog out of the striker path to thereby permit the striker to pass over the dog and for the door to extend below the dog. When the striker is below the dog and the door is moved upwardly, the dog will engage the striker and prohibit upward movement of the striker and the door.

  • Patent number: 4767150
Abstract: There is provided an improved trailer and tailgate therefore. The means for attaching the tailgate to the remainder of the trailer is independent of the inside surfaces of the sidewalls of the trailer. Thus the sidewalls are free from obstructions permitting a free flow of material out of a trailer when it is being dumped. A pair of cane shaped rods are received through the top and bottom of the tailgate and are connected to the floor and to the tops of the sidewalls of the trailer.

  • Patent number: 4750777
Abstract: A tailgate for a pickup type vehicle comprised of separate closure members arranged end-to-end and having adjacent ends abutting and rigidly secured to each other to form a single tailgate. Since the tailgate is comprised of separate closures, it can be easily shipped. The closure members can be readily assembled by the user and be used to replace existing tailgates. Moreover, due to the fact that the closure members may be covered with permeable material, it is well suited as a low drag replacement tailgate.

  • Patent number: 4592585
Abstract: A semitrailer (20) with improvements providing for increased use of available floor space is disclosed. The trailer (20) includes two sidewalls (22), a front end wall (24), a top wall (26) interconnecting said sidewalls (22) and front end wall (24) to enclose the semitrailer (20), and a back end (30) including hinged doors (32) providing for access to the inside of the semitrailer (20). A floor (28) interconnecting the sidewalls (22), is arched upward between the sidewalls (22) to provide a raised floor surface near a mid-portion of the floor (28) generally along the longitudinal extent thereof. Furthermore, the trailer includes a support structure (34) for supporting the floor (28) and the sidewalls (22, 24, 30), and the top wall (26). The arched floor (28) causes articles or pallets (48) loaded onto the trailer to tip outwardly toward the sidewalls (22) of the trailer (20) such that the top of the pallets ( 48) are spaced further apart.

  • Patent number: 4475759
Abstract: The invention comprises an improvement in pickup truck tailgates and the mechanism for operating such tailgates which allows the tailgate to be operated from essentially a conventional closed vertical position to a plurality of other positions which may provide negative lift to the rear of the pickup truck vehicle or minimize the drag coefficient of the vehicle. This is accomplished with a mechanism which allows the tailgate to be carried substantially inside of the pickup truck bed enclosure with air flow over the tailgate and between the tailgate and the floor of the pickup truck bed. The angle between the tailgate and the truck bed is adjustable to provide desired lift and drag minimization functions.

  • Patent number: 4416482
Abstract: A gate assembly is adapted to be used with a vehicle which has a cargo area defined by at least two sides extending substantially parallel to one another and comprises a gate member adapted to be moveably disposed within the cargo area of the vehicle and having a body with first and second sides. Guiding apparatus is adapted to be connected to the vehicle to restrict movement of the gate member between an open position to allow access into the cargo area and a closed position to limit access into the cargo area. Follower apparatus is adapted to be connected to the gate member to cooperate with the guiding apparatus by restricting movement of the first end of the gate member along a direction line substantially parallel to the sides of the vehicle and for restricting movement of the second end of the gate member along a direction line substantially transverse to the parallel sides of the vehicle when the gate member is being moved between the open and closed position.

  • Patent number: 4391188
Abstract: A pin-off and door closure assembly for a stationary refuse compactor which includes a packer unit having a ram for forcing refuse into a portable container through a load opening in the door thereof, the container being removably attached to the packer unit. The pin-off portion of the assembly includes an elongated pipe which, when not in use, is stored in a refuse-free compartment on the face of the ram. The pin-off pipe is transferred to its position of use across the container door load opening by extension of the ram into the container, following which pins are inserted through both sides of the container into the ends of the pipe for securing the latter into position. A hinged flap forming the forward side of the storage compartment permits the pipe to be removed from the compartment upon retraction of the ram.

The door assembly is located externally of the body adjacent the opening and includes a sliding door which is slidable from a stored position above the roof to a pivoted open position wherein the door covers the opening but is pivoted outward from the opening about a pivot axis located adjacent the bottom of the opening. The door is pivotable to a pivoted closed position wherein the door is pivoted toward the opening to fully close the opening. The door is located within fixedly mounted track means when in the stored position. The fixedly mounted track means are mounted externally of the body adjacent the roof and the sidewalls. The door is rolled into pivotable track means when it is in either the pivoted open or pivoted close position.
