Patent number: 8500184Abstract: A trailer has a rear gate that is closeable in a generally vertical orientation and openable in one of three orientations: the gate swings downwardly open to be used as a ramp; swings open to the left side, rotating around left hinges; and swings open to the right side, rotating around right hinges. Removal of pins from an upper left and upper right set of hinges enables rotation of the gate in the downward position. Removal of pins from the upper left and lower left set of hinges enables rotation of the gate in the right position. Removal of pins from the upper right and lower right set of hinges enables rotation of the gate in the left position. Removal of all of the pins allows the gate to be completely removed from the trailer.Type: GrantFiled: September 12, 2011Date of Patent: August 6, 2013Assignee: King Kutter, Inc.Inventors: J. Patent number: 7690711Abstract: An endgate assembly connectable to a vehicle body for opening and closing a vehicle bed formed by the body includes an endgate supportable by the vehicle body at a pivot connection and openable and closable by pivoting about the pivot connection. A keyed support member is securable to the vehicle body. A damper and a cable are connected to the endgate. Both the damper and the cable have ends that are configured to be retained by the keyed support member when the endgate is pivoted between the open and closed position. The cable and damper ends can be removed from the keyed support member without tools when the cable end is rotated relative to the keyed support member. A method of modifying the vehicle bed by detaching or reattaching the endgate assembly is also provided.Type: GrantFiled: September 3, 2008Date of Patent: April 6, 2010Assignee: GM Global Technology Operations, Inc.Inventors: Michael P. Patent number: 7156441Abstract: A tailgate counterbalancing hinge assembly includes a linear torque rod, a first end assembly and a second end assembly. One end assembly pivotally retains the tailgate while permitting the torque rod to be rigidly coupled to the tailgate for movement with the tailgate about a pivot axis. The other end assembly pivotally retains the tailgate and permits the end of the torque rod o be rigidly retained with respect to the vehicle body. The assemblies are easily mounted in the vehicle using brackets that are secured to the tailgate and a vehicle body hinge pin to simplify installation and repair of the assembly.Type: GrantFiled: January 10, 2005Date of Patent: January 2, 2007Assignee: M & C CorporationInventor: Donald Mossom Austin

Patent number: 6550838Abstract: A tailgate assembly for a cargo box having a support deck and a wall structure extending therefrom. The tailgate assembly comprises a pair of brackets positioned along the wall structure at spaced apart locations and a tailgate pivotally mounted between the brackets and releasably securable to the wall structure via a latch mechanism. The tailgate assembly has a hinge assembly which allows the tailgate to be installed and removed without tools.Type: GrantFiled: August 2, 2001Date of Patent: April 22, 2003Assignee: Club Car, Inc.Inventors: John Thomas Bobbitt, III, Byron J. Patent number: 6338519Abstract: The invention relates to a motor vehicle tailgate for mounting pivotally to a vehicle about hinges situated close to one of the edges of the tailgate. In the vicinity of its hinges, the tailgate is constituted by a main panel secured to the hinges and by a secondary panel which is movable relative to the main panel between a closed position in which it is superposed on the main panel so as to reconstitute a tailgate of full thickness, and an open position in which it is separate from the main panel, the main panel then forming a portion of the tailgate of reduced thickness.Type: GrantFiled: November 30, 2000Date of Patent: January 15, 2002Assignee: Compagnie Plastic OmniumInventors: Laurent Decker, Dominique Delavalle, Maƫlig Pommeret

Patent number: 5806907Abstract: A quick release fold-up tailgate assembly for attachment to a vehicle having a cargo space defined by a bed, sidewalls, and a tailgate pivotable between open and closed positions with respect to the bed and sidewalls includes a back panel substantially coextensive with the inner surface of the tailgate and a pair of side panels which are pivotable with respect to the back panel on opposite sides of the back panel between a retracted position at which the side panels are parallel to the back panel to fold up the assembly and an extended position at which the side panels are engageable with the sidewalls to extend the cargo space when the tailgate is in its open position. Hinges pivotally attach the side panels to the back panel and the fold-up assembly to the inner surface of the tailgate.Type: GrantFiled: June 17, 1997Date of Patent: September 15, 1998Inventors: Marlon Martinus, John Macbeth

Patent number: 5358301Abstract: According to the invention, a closure panel, such as a tailgate, is removably connected to a vehicle body for pivotal movement about a hinge axis. The panel may be removably lifted from the vehicle body when the panel is pivoted to a panel removal position. A torque rod counterbalance spring is carried by the panel and includes an elongated portion extending between a crank end anchored to the panel for pivotal movement therewith and a stationary end. A support device is anchored to the vehicle body and captures the stationary end of the torque rod to restrain its pivotal movement so that the torque rod is torsionally wound when the panel is pivoted away from the panel removal position to provide a counterbalance force for continuously urging the panel towards the panel removal position. The torque rod is completely unwound when the panel is pivoted to the panel removal position.Type: GrantFiled: November 22, 1993Date of Patent: October 25, 1994Assignee: General Motors CorporationInventors: Jeffrey L. Patent number: 5176486Abstract: A dump truck body has a bed and side walls defining a rear opening which is closed by a tailgate and loader unit removably attached to adaptor brackets inserted into the side walls. The unit includes a U-shaped frame supporting extendable tracks which carry a vertical tailgate supported for pivotal movement to form a horizontal platform. The frame also encloses two pairs of oppositely directed hydraulic cylinders which move the tracks, and a cam mechanism is shifted into alignment to pivot the tailgate between horizontal and vertical positions in response to movement of the tracks. The entire unit is pivotally supported by the adaptor brackets to pivot from the truck body when the body is inclined for dumping or when a pair of hydraulic cylinders are actuated.Type: GrantFiled: February 19, 1991Date of Patent: January 5, 1993Inventor: Robert W. Patent number: 5039154Abstract: A mounting system for a conventional tailgate of a pick-up truck is capable of situating the tailgate so as to minimize drag and at the same time provide effective use of the tailgate. Two mounting brackets are each structured to include a base for being mounted upon the top end of a respective sidewall of a pick-up truck cargo bed. Each of the mounting brackets is further structured with a particular fitting for interfacing with reciprocably shaped fittings on the tailgate to removably secure, in a selectively lockable manner, the tailgate to the fittings, in the same manner that the tailgate conventionally attaches to the conventional fittings located at the inside wall of the sidewalls of the pick-up truck.Type: GrantFiled: March 7, 1991Date of Patent: August 13, 1991Inventor: Barton E. Lewis
