  • Patent number: 8029056
Abstract: A coupling arm presses a first or second arm of a swing member, connected to a frame of a seat back, by an occupant's backrest load caused by a rear-end collision of a vehicle to pivotally move the swing member. The swing member has a first arm receiving a first backrest load via the coupling arm and a second arm receiving a second backrest load, which is larger than the first backrest load, via the coupling arm. A distance between the first arm and a rotation center of the swing member is longer than a distance between the second and the rotation center of the swing member.

Abstract: The invention relates to a headrest (10) for a vehicle seat, in particular for a backrest for a motor vehicle seat, said headrest essentially comprising a headrest frame or headrest casing (14) and a foam base body (356) that surrounds the headrest frame or casing (14). In the event of a rear impact on the motor vehicle, the headrest remains fixed in relation to the backrest (conventional headrest) or at least part of the headrest is immediately displaced towards the vehicle occupant (active headrest). According to the invention, the head of a vehicle occupant can be brought into contact with the headrest (10) at least at two different heights (k1z, k2z), (two-point contact), to reduce or neutralize a torque (My) about a y-axis (y-y) in the vicinity of the vertebral column and to prevent accident-related injuries to the seat occupant, in particular to prevent cervical spine syndrome or a whiplash injury in the event of a front and/or rear impact.

Abstract: A head restraint for a vehicle seat includes a first subsection facing the occupant's head, and is displaceable due to application of a predetermined force. A third subsection includes a central hub portion that supports the second subsection. The second subsection is arranged between the first subsection and a third subsection, and is mounted to the central hub portion of the third section and the first second and third subsections are rotatably displaceable about an axis of rotation that is parallel to the direction of displacement (C). A blocking device includes a toothed portion complimentarily engaged with a spacer device on the third subsection and having a resilient member preventing engagement of the toothed portion by the spacer device when the first subsection is not subjected to the application of the predetermined force, and also controls movement of the first subsection counter to a direction of displacement.

  • Patent number: 7894960
Abstract: An active head restraint system is disclosed with an actuator, a sensor, and a controller. The controller receives an impact signal from a triggering element, receives the position of an occupant's head, actuates the head restraint to move towards the occupant's head, and controls actuation to optimize head restraint movement as the head restraint moves proximate to the occupant's head. In another embodiment, the controller also manipulates head restraint velocity to optimize the velocity toward the occupant's head. Also presented is a method for actuating an active head restraint system for a vehicle seat. The method includes sending an impact signal to a controller, receiving the position of an occupant's head, transmitting the received position of the occupant's head to a controller, actuating the head restraint to move towards the occupant's head, and controlling head restraint actuation to optimize head restraint movement as it moves proximate to the occupant's head.
