Coupled Side-by-side Patents (Class 297/248)
  • Patent number: 4077666
Abstract: A modular seating arrangement comprises a plurality of interconnected bases, each defining a pair of female sockets therein. A seat, disposed on the base, has a pair of releasable male fasteners secured thereon which engage within the female sockets. Each male fastener comprises an elongated member having a bifurcated end defining a pair of split locking portions which are expanded into interlocking relationship within a respective one of the female sockets. Back, arm and/or table components may be secured on the base to complete the modular seating arrangement.

  • Patent number: 4062586
Abstract: A hanging chair for use in conjunction with an overhead support wherein the chair includes at least one flexible seat having a substantially trapezoidal configuration with the shorter parallel side forming the back portion of the chair, the longer parallel side forming the front portion of the chair and the two non-parallel sides forming the side portions of the chair. Frame members maintain the side portions of the chair in a stretched condition so that an occupant may easily enter and leave the chair from the front portion thereof.

  • Patent number: 4060277
Abstract: Modular multiple lounge seating and table furniture is provided which includes a tubular support frame. The tubular support frame is formed of a plurality of modular pairswhich may be intercoupled into a variety of configurations. Each modular pair includes a module individually formed of a U-shaped elongated tubular member having its closed end bent down into a plane extending substantially perpendicular to the plane of its open end. A cross bar is mounted across the open end of each module, and two such modules are coupled together by couplings between the respective bent-down portions to form the modular pair. A succession of such modular pairs may be intercoupled by couplings between open ends of the tubular members, between the respective cross bars at the open ends thereof, or by other means, so as to provide an assembly of any desired number of modular pairs, and of any desired configuration. Seat cushions, table tops, or other appropriate components, are mounted on each modular pair.

  • Patent number: 4054316
Abstract: An alignment structure for end-to-end positioned multichanneled seats and footboards such as may be used for seating stadium stands. Channel shaped inserts positioned in adjacent front and rear channels of two end-to-end seat sections (or footboards) span the joint between the seat sections and extend endwise into each to maintain end-to-end alignment between the seat sections. Each channel shaped insert is anchored in one or the other of the end-to-end seat sections and permits expansion and contraction displacement movement between the seat sections.

  • Patent number: 4046422
Abstract: Optimal body weight distribution and excellent sacro-lumbar support are provided by a chair which changes configuration automatically to support the body in any sitting posture. The chair seat is mounted on a pair of laterally spaced-apart, elongated, substantially parallel seat supports disposed lengthwise of the chair, and the seat has sleeves that are received telescopically on the seat supports for sliding movement such that the seat slides forward and backward, relative to the chair back. The back tilts independently of the seat to conform to the sitting posture of a person sitting in the chair. The chair has arms that are shaped and dimensioned to interlock adjacent chairs for ganging.

  • Patent number: 4043591
Abstract: This invention provides a modular furniture construction, having one or more seating modules adapted for lateral alignment together. Each seating module includes a seat-support, a back-support, and legs. The seat-support has structure which includes, along one edge thereof adapted to be aligned with similar edges of other like modules, an elongated support member which has a stepped configuration at each of its ends. Two filler blocks are provided, and are shaped to fit into and fill the stepped configurations at the two ends of a composite elongated support member comprising the individual elongated support members of the different seat-support structures for the several modules.

  • Patent number: 4036527
Abstract: This invention provides a frameless, stress skin seat construction which can be attached without frame members either to others of its kind or to a supporting surface. The seat construction includes a seat pan of sheet metal formed to define beam-portions at opposite sides, a cylindrical portion at the front for load supporting capacity, and a concave upward dished portion in the rear to add torsion resistance. The construction also includes a back pan of sheet metal which is shaped to define rearwardly opening beam portions at opposite sides, a concave forward dished portion in the lower half to add torsion resistance, and a rearwardly opening U-shaped channel at the top for providing beam strength. The two pans are secured together in such a way that a force sufficient to fold the pans together will cause buckling primarily at the joint between them, rather than any buckling in the pans themselves.

  • Patent number: 3990741
Abstract: A tandem structure including chairs and the like formed of modular assemblies each comprising a generally horizontal load supporting member, such as a chair seat portion, table top, or the like, mounted in a fastening structure connected to an upper portion of a leg member which has a base portion engageable with a support surface or floor. The modular assemblies are each connected to another for cooperative support by elongated connection members which extend therebetween and each beam member has opposite end portions thereof removably secured to the fastening structure of the respective modular assembly.

  • Patent number: 3982785
Abstract: A chair has a seat that moves forward and backward with respect to its support, preferably in such a way that the front end is elevated somewhat as the seat moves forward, and a back that pivots between a substantially upright and an inclined position, depending upon the posture assumed by one sitting in the chair. The chair is of modular construction and embodies various parts, such as legs, back supports, arm rests and writing surfaces, that are interchangeable or can be added on or left off. Modular fittings are provided to join two or more chairs together.

  • Patent number: 3981536
Abstract: Backrest or back modules for stadium seating molded of plastic material are securely fastened along lateral edges to barlike support uprights by clips. Edges of adjacent backrest modules are inserted into upper and lower lips on the back supports; the opposed edges of the backrest modules are clamped by a single clip and abut a center stiffening rib on the supports. The clip has opposed horizontal reinforcing ribs which engage and clamp the brackrest module edges. The reinforcing ribs of the clip are chamfered so that as the clip is installed, the adjacent backrest module edges are drawn in or cammed snuggly against the center stiffening rib. Additional pressure applied by the fastener causes the reinforcing ribs of the clip to impress into the edges of the backrest modules causing surface cold-flow of the plastic material, thus eliminating both vertical and lateral movement.

  • Patent number: 3973800
Abstract: Modular furniture units are quickly and easily assembled and/or disassembled using interconnecting hooking devices. The units are assembled from separate arm, seat and back sections and the interconnecting hooking devices are preferably of the same configuration on each piece, each of the hooking devices including a male member and female opening so that one device can be hooked into another device. In the simplest form, e.g. in a chair, no legs are needed because the arm members can support the entire structure. However, where sectional sofas or the like are constructed from the modular units and where there may be too much play between the modular units, it may be desirable to put support legs under the modular seat portions. Also, in another preferred form, the modular units can be assembled as or converted to the form of a divan or bed or the like.
