  • Patent number: 7234772
Abstract: An articulated seating mechanism including a rocker base, a seat plate, and a pair of side rails, each having an arcuate side. The side rails may be disposed downwardly from the seat plate or upwardly from the rocker base. First and second arcuate gear portions are disposed on the arcuate side of each of the side rails and a first and second substantially flat or linear gear racks are affixed either to the underside of the seat plate or the upper side of the rocker base, so as to bring the linear gears and the arcuate gears into intermeshing relationship. A back support is pivotally connected to the seat plate and to first and second back links, and the back links are pivotally connected to the rocker base to provide a rocking motion of the seat plate and a dynamic synchronous adjustment of the angular variation between the seat plate and the back support. The linear gear racks move in a tangent to the arcuate gear portions to provide a moving fulcrum during rocking movements.

  • Patent number: 6997510
Abstract: A rocking chair comprising a base, a seat assembly including a seat rockably mounted to the base and a backrest mounted to the seat so as to be movable between first and second positions includes a couple of biasing members mounted to the backrest for biasing the backrest towards the first position, and a locking mechanism mounted to both the base and the seat assembly for locking the seat relatively to the base when the backrest is in the first position. The locking mechanism is operated by applying at least a threshold force onto the backrest, which causes the backrest to move between the first and second positions relatively to the seat, unlocking the backrest relatively to the base, and allowing the seat to move relatively to the base. The locking mechanism includes a toothed rack and an arm lever that operatively cooperate in response to a small force exerted on the backrest. The rocking chair is safe for people having hand or forearm disability problem and for people with reduced mobility.

  • Patent number: 6722734
Abstract: The present invention relates to a locking assembly for a rocking chair. The locking assembly includes a pair of jaws mounted to the body-supporting portion of the chair and a set of pins mounted to the chair base portion of the chair. The jaws are operable to engage a selected pin to lock the body-supporting portion of the chair relative the chair base portion in a position that corresponds to the selected pin. The jaws include gripping faces that spread apart to define a recess when the locking assembly is operated. At the same time the gripping faces move toward the pin to cause the pin to enter the recess such that the pin becomes wedged in the recess.

  • Patent number: 6213551
Abstract: A locking mechanism for chairs such as gliding and rocking chairs comprises a toothed rack for connection to the chair seat with the rack oriented generally in the direction of movement of the chair seat relative to the base and the teeth extending along the rack and facing towards a pin that is carried in the base. The rear end of the rack is pivoted to the chair seat and the front end of the rack is connected to a pivoting linkage arrangement operated by a lever at the side of the chair seat. Operation of the lever is effective to swing the toothed rack from a retracted position to a lowered position wherein the locking pin is engaged by a registering tooth in the rack. The attitude of the chair in the locked position will depend upon the position of the locking interengagement between the pin and the toothed rack.
