  • Patent number: 5516198
Abstract: A reclining device for vehicle seat, which is of such a structure wherein a main shaft is provided between a movable arm plate fixed to a seat back of the seat and a base plate fixed to a seat cushion fixed to a seat cushion of the seat, wherein a first lock gear element is defined in one of the arm and base plates, while a second lock gear element is slidably mounted on the main shaft for meshed engagement with or disengagement from the first lock gear element, and wherein an interlocking element is disposed along the main shaft between the arm and base plates, so as to permit such engagement and disengagement between the first and second lock gear elements to be effected by rotational operation of a lever. This makes the reclining device small in size and weight. The two gear elements may be formed generally annular for full meshed engagement therebetween, thereby making them rigid against deformation.

  • Patent number: 5364165
Abstract: A backrest latch assembly (20) is provided for a wheelchair (10) having a movable frame member (11) mounted to a stationary frame member (12) for articulation between a deployed position and a moved position. The latch assembly (20) includes a sliding bolt (22) having a first surface (30) and a base member (23) having a second surface (31). In a latched position, the first surface (30) is oriented in an angularly aligned orientation and cooperates with the second surface (31) to releasably latch the movable frame member (11) to the stationary frame member (12) in the deployed position. The bolt (22) can be axially displaced and rotated to a released position, at which the bolt (22) is retained in a stable condition with the first surface (30) out of engagement with the second surface (31) to allow manual release or disengagement of the bolt (22) without re-latching of the bolt. Thereafter, the movable frame member (11) is free to articulate from the deployed position to the moved position.

  • Patent number: 4580838
Abstract: A hinge fitting for an adjustable seat has a single rotatable handle by ms of which the back rest can be tilted and the height of the seat portion adjusted. The handle is connected to a shaft which can be selectively coupled to one of two eccentrics mounted on an axle which passes through the two hinge parts and one end of a pivotable seat support. One eccentric is coupled to one hinge part which has spur gear areas engaging inner toothings on the other hinge part. Rotation of this eccentric causes the inclination of the back rest to be adjusted. The other eccentric is coupled to a portion of the end of the seat support which is constructed as a three-stage hollow piston having inner toothings engaging spur gear areas on the adjacent seat hinge part. Rotation of this eccentric causes the height of the seat to be adjusted.

  • Patent number: 4257647
Abstract: A latch assembly for a pivoted vehicle seat (14) which provides sufficient locking capability to permit a seat belt (15) to be mounted on the frame (10) of the seat as opposed to the base (16) of the vehicle. The latch assembly includes two slidable horizontally spaced apart latch blocks (20,20') mounted on the frame (10) of the seat (14) for engaging base mounted catches (22,22'). Two actuator arms (48,48') coupled to the frame, are operatively connected to each latch block (20,20') and are secured to and positioned by an operator actuated release member (36). Movement of the actuator arms (48,48') causes the latch blocks (20,20') to disengage the base (16) mounted catches (22,22') substantially simultaneously.

  • Patent number: 4236753
Abstract: A seat reclining mechanism, for example for vehicle seats, is of the kind having first and second arms for attachment to portions of a seat. Each arm has a respective internal gear secured to it, and the gears are coaxial and the arms can rotate mutually about a pivot. An external gear is slidable axially on the pivot for movement into engagement with one or the other or both of the internal gears to lock them together. The improvement of the invention is an arrangement for shifting the external gear axially into and out of engagement with the internal gears. The arrangement has a plurality of operation elements secured on and extending axially from the external gear, and an axially acting cam engaging the operation elements for shifting them and the external gear axially of the pivot. The cam may be a rotary cam or a linearly slidable cam.

Abstract: A seat back recliner having seat back and cushion arms connected to each other about a pivotal axis for adjustable movement. Plate-like ends of the arms are pivotally connected to each other with a locking ring therebetween fixed to the seat back arm encircling the pivotal axis. Locking teeth of the ring extend inwardly and are arranged in an arcuate shape about the pivotal axis to be engaged by a toothed end of a locking dog that is slidable between the plate ends and between spaced guides on the seat cushion arm end. A spring biased actuator and cam normally position the dog in a locking position where its toothed end engages the ring teeth to prevent pivoting of the seat back arm. A blocking pin on the dog and a blocking surface on the seat back arm cooperate to prevent engagement of the dog and the ring during pivoting of the seat back arm to the easy-enter position.
