Passive Restraint System Patents (Class 297/469)
  • Patent number: 4213637
Abstract: The device comprises a belt portion passing round a support member carried by an arm which is pivotally mounted on a support located on the side of the seat opposed to the adjacent door of the vehicle. The arm is movable to a roughly vertical clearing position when the door is open. The arm is connected by a cable to a lever which is pivotally mounted on a lateral part of the body of the vehicle and is operatively connected to the door.

  • Patent number: 4203618
Abstract: A fixed length of belt has an outboard end attached to the door and an inboard end attached to the vehicle body forwardly of the seat. A track extends longitudinally inboard the seat and mounts a belt carriage which slidably receives the belt intermediate the inboard and outboard ends. Opening movement of the door causes the outboard end of the belt to be moved outwardly and forwardly so that sliding movement of the belt through the belt carriage causes forward movement of the belt carriage to stow the belt forwardly of the seat. A spring retracts the carriage toward the seat to establish the belt in a rearward restraining position when the door is closed. In the preferred embodiment, the belt having its inboard end mounted on the vehicle body forwardly of the seat has its outboard end attached high on the vehicle door to provide a diagonal shoulder belt. A lap belt has an outboard end attached low on the vehicle door and an inboard end mounted inboard the seat.

  • Patent number: 4193614
Abstract: A restraining belt includes an inboard lap belt piece connected to an outboard lap belt piece and a shoulder belt portion connected to the junction of the two lap belt pieces. One end of the inboard lap belt is received by a conventional inertia-lock belt retractor mounted rearward of a vehicle seat and inboard of it. An end of the outboard lap belt is received by a similar retractor mounted rearward of the seat and on the outboard side of it. An end of the shoulder belt is received by a third retractor mounted to a vehicle body rearward of the seat and adjacent to and above a frame for a vehicle door. There is a lower horizontal track adjacent the bottom edge of the door and door frame; and an upper track on the vehicle body along the uper edge of the door frame.

  • Patent number: 4190267
Abstract: A passive seat belt restraint system including a seat belt having one end connected to a vehicle door and the other end connected to the vehicle on the opposite side of a seat adjacent the door. The seat belt is moved along a track which is located in the console and in the dashboard in front of the seat. A hook member is movable in the console track and supports the seat belt when the belt is in its forward position. A buckle is movable in both the console and the dashboard tracks and is attached to the belt to form shoulder and lap belts. The buckle is moved to a position closer to the door to permit easy entry to and exit from the seat.

  • Patent number: 4189169
Abstract: A seat belt fastening device is designed for use with a safety belt which is attached to a vehicle door. The device is provided with a first plate mounted to the door and extending parallel to the door edge in the direction of door closing and a second plate mounted to the vehicle column adjacent the door. The first plate is connected with the safety belt and, upon closing of the door, enters into a force transmitting relation to the second plate on the door column structure, so that forces on the safety belt can be transmitted to the vehicle column.

  • Patent number: 4183582
Abstract: The present invention relates to an emergency passive restraint system comprises a protector supported along the side walls of the seat, and combined with a push-up means, and a flexible cord connected with a slider movable along the leg of the protector and with a pull-up means in both sides of the seat. Both of the restraining members are actuated simultaneously in emergency. The occupant's knees are lifted by the upward movement of the protector, and the cords are pulled up to a diagonal position, so that the occupant is restrained against his forward and lateral movements simultaneously.

  • Patent number: 4181326
Abstract: An inhibitor intended for the prevention of early reel lock-up during door opening for passive vehicle safety belt systems incorporating door-mounted reels. In such systems where a high inertia mass moves a pawl into engagement with the take-up reel during emergency conditions thereby allowing freedom of occupant movement during other periods of time, biasing means are provided for resisting the movement of the high inertia mass/pawl combination when the vehicle door is in the process of being opened and closed. Embodiments disclosed include the use of a selectively activatable electromagnet, a movable permanent magnet, gravitational biasing of the pawl, spring biasing of the pawl, and spring biasing of the high inertia mass.

  • Patent number: 4180283
Abstract: A child safety seat restraint adapter for restraining a child safety seat on a vehicle seat in association with a preinstalled passive diagonal torso safety belt anchored at one end on the vehicle door, extending across the vehicle seat and being anchored at an opposite end inboard of the vehicle seat, has an auxiliary safety belt buckle and an auxiliary anchor for anchoring the buckle outboard of the vehicle seat to the vehicle floor, an auxiliary tongue plate for releasably engaging with the buckle and a connector for connecting the tongue plate in a fixed relation to the preinstalled safety belt intermediate its ends whereby the child safety seat may be restrained on the vehicle seat by passing portions of the safety belt inboard of the connector over the child seat, when positioned on the passenger seat, and engaging the tongue plate with the buckle.
