Abstract: Problems encountered in adapting child restraint devices of the kind used to retain a child in the seat of a shopping cart, "stroller", dining chair, or like device, for use in different circumstances and with children of different sizes, are overcome by a restraining device which comprises a pair of straps, each having a releasable fastener at each end portion. The cooperating parts of the fastener are spaced apart lengthways so that when they are fastened the end portion will form a loop. In use, the straps are placed over a child's shoulders and crossed over each other both front and rear. The ends of the straps are attached to a belt secured around the child by looping the end portions around the belt and fastening the releasable fasteners. The restraining device conveniently restrains the child in the seat, the shoulder straps preventing it from wriggling upwards out of the waist belt. Because the straps are releasably attached to the belt, they can be used independently.

  • Patent number: 4728119
Abstract: The travel chair has a form-fitted shell which is attached to a metal frame, capable of transporting handicapped and elderly persons from their residence; through public transportation terminals; aboard public transportation vehicles, such as aircraft and busses; hence to their destination without the individual leaving the apparatus. Folding rear legs allows the apparatus to be placed in a conventional seat without the individual leaving the shell. In limited spaces, the shell can be removed from the frame and placed in a conventional seat without the individual leaving the shell. In either configuration, the person, while remaining in the shell, can use conventional restraint devices, such as aircraft and automotive seat belts. In addition, inherent safety devices are incorporated in the apparatus for personal security. For storing or separate transportation, both the front and rear legs of the apparatus can be folded; thereby reducing the required space by approximately one-half.

  • Patent number: 4618186
Abstract: The child restraint of the present invention includes a waistband which is placed around the child. The waistband is retained in that position by hook and napped loop means such as VELCRO. The use of hook and napped loop means permits the waistband to be easily adjusted to fit the size of any particular child. The restraint further includes an elongated strap which is securely attached to the waistband. The strap is adapted to be looped around a suitable anchor, such as the parent's seatbelt or the armrest of the parent's seat. The end of the strap is passed around the fixed object and then threaded through a ring attached to the waistband. The strap is then pulled back across the ring so that it overlaps the portion of the strap projecting toward the ring. The overlapped portions of the strap are secured together by hook and napped loop means such as VELCRO. The device restrains the child from becoming dislodged from his parent's lap during landing and take-off or when turbulence is encountered.

  • Patent number: 4607885
Abstract: A head restraining device for preventing possibly injurious forward and lateral motion of the head of a child seated in a child's seat, such device comprising a rigid U-shaped restraining member which surrounds the forward and lateral portions of the child's head, and is of a size to be separated therefrom by a slight air gap so as to not be uncomfortable yet be capable of being engaged by the child's head and restraining such from any more than minimal forward and lateral motion. A flexible tether removably and adjustably anchors the head restraint to the back of the child's seat at any selected height. With the restrainer thus anchored, support members at the ends thereof aid in maintaining the restrainer rigid with respect to the front surface of the seat back and preventing the device from slipping out of place relative to the child's head.
