  • Patent number: 5364120
Abstract: A multifunctional mobility device for physically disabled people comprises a L-shaped frame having at its lower end a platform adapted to receive thereon a user in a substantially standing position. Front and rear wheels support the frame and the platform. The front wheels are rotatably mounted to the frame just in front of the platform. The frame includes at its upper end a pair of grips which can be grasped by the user when standing on the platform. Therefore, to operate the mobility device, the user must exert on the frame a sufficient force oriented substantially in a forward direction thereby producing a pivot of the frame and of the platform about the front wheel and a rotation of the front wheel which results in a forward displacement of the mobility device and of the user. A stabilizer terminated by a swivel caster is provided in front of the front wheels for limiting the forward pivot of the mobility device. A retractable seat also transforms the mobility aid into a wheelchair.

  • Patent number: 5050862
Abstract: A child's walker includes pivotally connected first and second frame members which rotate with respect to one another to define an open position and a closed position. A third frame member has a tray on the front portion thereof and a rear portion which freely pivots on the first frame member. Height adjusting means are secured to the legs of the first frame member, these means supporting the legs of the second frame member when the walker is in the open position. The walker folds to the closed position for carrying and storage.

  • Patent number: 5020560
Abstract: A walker that has wheels to facilitate its movement when it is not being relied upon as a primary means of support and that has brakes to hold said wheels against rotation when it is. The wheels are arranged in a tricycle configuration and brakes are associated with the two rear wheels. A pair of brake pads flank each wheel and are held into braking relation to each wheel by a pair of spring members, there being one spring for each brake, when little or no weight is applied to the walker by the user. The springs are compressed and the wheels are free to rotate when the weight of the user is applied to the walker. The user's forearms rest in padded armrests and hand grips are provided forwardly of those arm rests. The walker is adjustable in height and is foldable when not in use.

  • Patent number: 4981307
Abstract: A suspension harness/body jacket arrangement adapted for medical applications is disclosed. The harness arrangement suspends all or part of the body weight of a patient with respect to a wheelchair's fixed seat, a bed or the floor. The body jacket is seatless, and fabricated from a mesh or fish net material which elongates and grips the patient more snugly depending upon the tension applied thereto by suspension springs. In the case of incapacitated patients confined to the wheelchair, the arrangement may be used to substantially reduce the pressure applied to the patient's buttocks, thus preventing the development of pressure sores.

  • Patent number: 4948156
Abstract: A simple, lightweight, easily assemblable, disassemblable and transportable frame and motive means which can be attached to a wheelchair to enable a user having a lower body disability to safely move to and from a standing position without assistance from another person. The device provides braces against horizontal movement of the user's knees and hips when standing to allow the individual's skeletal structure to support the majority of the individual's body weight. The device utilizes a manually operated worm gear mechanism to provide a mechanical advantage in lifting and security against undesirable reverse movement of the lifting means when under load.

  • Patent number: 4884799
Abstract: This invention is directed to an improved adjusting bracket assembly having particular application for providing a height adjustment for a baby walker. The adjusting bracket assembly includes a sliding rod, springs, a block member, a setting plate and a guide block to provide a height adjustment. By depressing the guide block, an inclined surface of the guide block will displace the sliding rod and thereby detach a pair of detents of the block member from the beveled teeth of an adjusting bracket member. With the detents detached, the adjusting bracket is then displaceable for adjusting the height of the walker.

  • Patent number: 4865382
Abstract: A surgeon's operating stool 10 is provided which is readily movable when not occupied by a person but resists undesirable movement once a person has occupied the stool 10. The stool is provided with a series of rollers 20 which normally support the stool 10 and allow for movement in any desired direction. However, the rollers 20 include a spring loaded collapsible mechanism which, when occupied by a person, forces the rollers 20 to retract into the base 12 of the stool 10 and causes a nonskin surface 38 to engage the floor. The base 12 of the stool 10 is configured to receive the feet of a person using the stool, such that a person using the stool in either a standing or sitting position forces the retracting mechanism to remain retracted and thereby prevent undesirable movement during use. The stool 10 also includes a hydraulic height adjusting mechanism which is readily adjustable via foot operation.
