  • Patent number: 5758927
Abstract: A truck for transporting and dumping a load which includes a vehicle with a fifth wheel configured to pivot about a horizontal first axis from a first extreme to a second extreme. A dump trailer hitched to the fifth wheel includes an elongate load bed. The trailer also includes a hitch base for coupling the trailer to the fifth wheel, an arm pivotally linking the hitch base and bed, and a load bearing lift mechanism. A lift mechanism selectively tilts the trailer bed to dump a load. The lift mechanism has an upper end portion connected to the bed and a lower end portion pivotally connected to the hitch base. The lower end portion is configured to pivot about a second axis generally parallel to the first axis. The second axis is horizontally displaced from the first axis so that loading of the fifth wheel by the trailer substantially maintains the fifth wheel in one of the first and second extremes during dumping and avoids the need to lock the fifth wheel during transport.

  • Patent number: 5482356
Abstract: A trailer (10) has a shell (12) of a semicircular shape with U-shaped reinforcing ribs (50) spaced longitudinally along the length of the shell (12). The reinforcing ribs (50) are of an increasing depth from the upper ends thereof to the bottoms thereof at the bottom (55) of the shell (12). A hoist (86) is mounted in inverted relation about trunnions (94) adjacent the bottom of front end wall (90) of shell (12) to minimize stress concentrations and is easily removed by removal of brackets (120) secured to opposed support members (88) on front end wall (90).

  • Patent number: 4954039
Abstract: A dump trailer for transporting containers includes a movable frame that receives an associated container. A support plate operatively engages a fifth wheel of a tractor. Interposed between the support plate and the frame is a telescopic hoist assembly to pivot the frame relative to the support plate. A draft arm also extends between the support plate and frame to guide movement of the frame during the hoisting operation. Loading and unloading of the container relative to the tilted frame is controlled by a cylinder and cable assembly secured to the frame. The support plate and frame also include a series of flanges for locking the frame against lateral and longitudinal movement relative to the support plate.

  • Patent number: 4948155
Abstract: A trailer has a trailer body, pairs of rear wheels at opposite sides of the trailer and hydraulics for tilting the forward end of the trailer body upwardly to dump the load in such body. The trailer dumps the load in a retracted position of the wheels. To increase the load which such body can carry while travelling, the rear wheels of the trailer are movable to extended positions. To provide for the extension and retraction of the rear wheels and facilitate the dumping of the load, a member is attached at a first end to leaf springs between the wheels and at a second end to the trailer. At an intermediate position, the member is attached to a rod extensible and retractible relative to a hydraulic cylinder to extend or retract the first end of the member and the wheels about the attachment at the second end as a fulcrum. The cylinder is attached to the trailer forwardly of the attachment of the member to the trailer at the second end.

  • Patent number: 4865341
Abstract: A trailer body (600) and pedestal (604) are provided where the pedestal supports an axle assembly (605) which is pivotally secured to the pedestal so that when the pedestal is in the forward position to permit trailer dumping, the axle assembly pivots about the pedestal to keep all wheels (612) on the ground. A safety plate (630) can be mounted between a frame and pedestal to prevent structure from being wedged between the transverse beams of the frame and pedestal as the pedestal slides relative to the frame. Also, a striker plate (616) is employed to prevent a locking wedge (622) from interfering with movement of the pedestal relative to the frame until the pedestal is either in the rearward position or in the forward position. A fender structure (614) is provided which acts as a fender when the pedestal is in the rearward position, but is not damaged as the pedestal moves to the forward position.
