Wear Shield Or Replaceable Wear Sleeve Patents (Class 299/104)
  • Patent number: 6986552
Abstract: An insert for a cutting tool has a conical cutting tip, and axially behind the cutting tip is a mid-section. Behind the mid-section is a cylindrical base. Where the insert is for use on a tool of a milling machine, the base has a diameter of at least 0.800 inch so as to be considerably larger than the standard base of inserts currently in use on such machines. The enlarged base protects the tool body to which the insert is attached from washaway. The invention is useable in other industries employing rotary cutting tools. In other industries, the insert is made with an enlarged diameter base so as to protect the tool body behind the insert from erosion or washaway. Indentations in the outer circumference of the base improve the rotation of the tool and provide channels through which loosened particles of hard material are directed, thereby further reducing erosion of the tool body.

Abstract: A tool assembly includes an axially symmetric tool having a tapered forward end, a radial flange, and a cylindrical shank. A retainer is fitted around the cylindrical shank, a washer is fitted around the retainer, and an annular elastomeric member is bonded to the inner surface of the washer. When the rotatable shank is fitted into a cylindrical mounting bore of a tool holder, the annular elastomeric member prevents the washer from rotating with the tool.

  • Patent number: 6854810
Abstract: The wear sleeve in the present cutter tool assembly comprises a rearward split ring portion and an intermediate cylindrical ring portion adjacent a forward shoulder portion. The outer diameter of the wear sleeve intermediate portion and rearward split ring portion is uniform. The wear sleeve is inserted into the bit holder's stepped bore aperture. The split ring portion is radially compressed by the smaller diameter rearward end as the sleeve is hammered and axially displaced into the bit holder. The split ring portion forms frictional contact with the opposite end portion of the aperture. The wear sleeve friction fit can be easily removed manually in the field. The bit holder and cooperating support block are designed to limit the amount of relative yaw between the two members during operation to reduce the overall wear there between.

  • Patent number: 6824225
Abstract: A rotatable cutting bit, and rotatable cutting bit—bit holder assembly and washer that have increased wear resistance characteristics. The assembly incorporates a new holding washer design that has improved rotational characteristics between the cutter bit and top surface of the washer during operation. The washer includes a front face and a generally flat rear face, said front face has a plurality of ridges, said ridges each have a top face forming a bearing surface for the cutting bit to enhance rotation of the cutter bit and the flat rear face reduces rotation of said washer. The relative rotation between the rear face of the washer and front of the block face is reduced in the present invention. The improved wear resistance properties of the invention reduce the amount of necessary maintenance of rotary drums in the field resulting in reduce downtime and increase productivity. The washer is also simple to manufacture in a cost effective manner and easy to assemble in the field.

  • Patent number: 6786557
Abstract: A cutting tool assembly including a protective wear sleeve that is fixed in the cavity of a bit holder by a tapered wedge portion that is compressed in a correspondingly tapered portion of the bit holder cavity and an accompanying retainer both combine affix the wear sleeve to the bit holder cavity in a secure manner. The applicant's protective wear sleeve invention can be set in the bit holder by several axial blows with a hammer or other appropriate tool. Unlike some other designs in the prior art which require the insertion of a pin or nut threaded onto a bolt or clip connected to the rear end of the cutting to secure the wear protection sleeve to the bit holder in the invention no other assembly step is necessary to secure the protective sleeve inside the bit holder cavity. The protective sleeve will remain in this position with no relative axial movement or rotation between the wear sleeve and the bit holder during operation of the cutting tool machinery.

  • Patent number: 6644755
Abstract: A fixture for attaching a round shank chisel to a road milling machine or the like. The round shank chisel has a chisel head and a chisel shank. With a bearing surface the chisel head rests upon a wearing protection disk which in turn rests on and is supported by a chisel holder. The chisel shank is accommodated by a location bore of the chisel holder. This invention prevents dirt from penetrating the area of the location bore of such a fixture and at the same time ensures that the free movability of the round shank chisel is not impaired. Thus, the chisel holder has a circumferential projection or a circumferential depression which extends along the location bore. Also, the wearing protection disk has a circumferential receiving groove or a circumferential shoulder and the projection or the depression of the chisel holder engages with the receiving groove or the depression of the wearing protection disk when the round shank chisel is assembled.

  • Patent number: 6059373
Abstract: A pick holder (110) is frictionally seated via a round cylindrical barrel (112) in a pick box of a continuous miner. A pick is in operation rotationally located in a bore (114). The bore (114), toward a rear thereof, has an internal, inwardly projecting screw thread (30). When the pick has been removed, the pick holder (110) is extracted from the pick box by screwing a screw threaded shank into the screw thread (30), and applying an extracting force via the shank and the interengaged screw threads to the pick holder (110).

  • Patent number: 5842747
Abstract: An apparatus for a roadway surface reclaiming drum is disclosed that includes a plurality of flighting sections generally helically attached to a cylindrical surface of the drum at an included angle of about 40.degree. to about 60.degree.. During rotation of the drum about its cylindrical axis, a plurality of cutter bits mounted to openings defined in the flighting sections loosen roadway surface and the flighting sections transport loosened roadway material axially along the drum and between the flighting sections towards a lateral center portion of the drum. A plurality of teeth received in recesses defined in walls of the flighting sections facilitate transport of loosened roadway material between adjacent flighting sections towards the lateral center portion of the drum and reduce wear of the flighting sections. Cutter bit inserts for receiving the cutter bits are mounted to base portions attached to the outermost portions of the flighting sections, and define interior bores.

  • Patent number: 5738415
Abstract: A pick box (3) and sleeve (6) combination comprises a sleeve-receiving aperture (5) in the box (3), with the sleeve (6) located in the aperture (5) and adapted, in use, to receive the shank (17) of a mineral cutter pick (7). A zone (33) of differential area is provided between the external periphery of the sleeve (6) and the aperture (5). A fluid sealing ring (29) is located to each side of the zone (33) of differential area, and a hydraulic fluid entry bore (30) is located intermediate the two sealing rings (29) and is in fluid flow communication with the zone (33), whereby upon admission of hydraulic fluid under sufficient pressure to the zone (33) via the entry bore, the fluid, being confined by the sealing rings (29), effects hydraulic, axial displacement of the sleeve (6) with respect to the box (3).
