Abstract: A road grading pick includes a cutting head, a shank, a shoulder at a transition between the cutting head and the shank, and a polygonal-shaped washer or an oval-shaped washer. The shank is positioned in an opening of the washer to position the washer along a longitudinal length of the shank between a rearward end of the shank and the rearward facing surface of the shoulder. In a preinstalled position, the washer compresses a friction retainer on the shank of the road grading pick to facilitate seating of the road grading pick in a blade of a road grading apparatus. In an installed position on an adapter board for a moldboard of road grading equipment, the friction retainer is no longer in the opening of the washer and the washer prevents washer rotation and shields an underlying mounting surface while allowing rotation of the road grading pick.

  • Patent number: 7172256
Abstract: A cutting pick includes an elongate shank, a cutting tip fixed to one end of the shank to project from that end and which is of a material that is harder than the material of the shank, and an annular sleeve which is attached about the shank adjacent the cutting tip. The sleeve is of a material (e.g., tungsten carbide) which is harder than the material of the shank and which has a lower propensity for incendive spark production during a cutting operation than the material of the shank. The sleeve includes a plurality of annular sleeve portions which are attached about the shank immediately adjacent to each other.

  • Patent number: 6824225
Abstract: A rotatable cutting bit, and rotatable cutting bit—bit holder assembly and washer that have increased wear resistance characteristics. The assembly incorporates a new holding washer design that has improved rotational characteristics between the cutter bit and top surface of the washer during operation. The washer includes a front face and a generally flat rear face, said front face has a plurality of ridges, said ridges each have a top face forming a bearing surface for the cutting bit to enhance rotation of the cutter bit and the flat rear face reduces rotation of said washer. The relative rotation between the rear face of the washer and front of the block face is reduced in the present invention. The improved wear resistance properties of the invention reduce the amount of necessary maintenance of rotary drums in the field resulting in reduce downtime and increase productivity. The washer is also simple to manufacture in a cost effective manner and easy to assemble in the field.

  • Patent number: 6742735
Abstract: A tool body is cold formed by inserting a blank into a die which defines a portion of the outer surface of the tool body after which a punch applies an impact to the blank causing the outer surface of the blank to conform to the contour of the die. The completed tool has an elongate hub with a cylindrical forward portion having a diameter sized to rotatably fit within the bore of a tool holder and a rearward portion with a diameter a little less than the that of the forward portion. The smaller diameter rearward portion facilitates the insertion and alignment of the tool in the tool holder.

  • Patent number: 6739327
Abstract: A cutting tool has a centrally located tungsten carbide insert brazed into a seat at the forward end of the tool. The seat has a circular mouth and rearward of the mouth is a frustoconical inner wall. At the bottom of the seat is a transverse surface. A tungsten carbide insert is brazed into the seat and the base of the insert is complementary in shape to the seat. A second annular insert may also be brazed into a complementary shaped annular seat that surrounds the centrally located seat.

Abstract: A rotatable cutting bit, and rotatable cutting bit-bit holder assembly and washer that have increased wear resistance characteristics. The assembly incorporates a new holding washer design that has improved wear resistant characteristics between the cutter bit and top surface of the bit holder during operation. The cutter bit assembly includes a bit holder having a top surface, a generally flat washer, the top surface includes a top face forming a bearing surface for the cutting bit to enhance rotation of the cutter bit. The wear rate caused by the relative rotation between the rear face of the washer and top surface of the block face is reduced in the present invention. The top surface of the bit holder is hardfaced to limit and reduce wear. The improved wear resistance properties of the invention reduce the amount of necessary maintenance of rotary drums in the field resulting in reduce downtime and increase productivity.

Abstract: A chisel holder changing system having a base element with a chisel holder receiver, into which a chisel holder equipped with a chisel can be inserted, wherein the chisel holder is inserted with a holder shaft into the chisel holder receivers and is maintained therein with the aid of bracing screws. Bracing screws can be screwed into a threaded receiver of the base element and during this are supported under tension in a bracing receiver of the holder shaft of the chisel holder. If in a chisel holder changing system in accordance with this invention the surfaces of the outer screw thread of the bracing screw and/or of the inner screw thread of the threaded receivers of the chisel holder receivers have a metallic layer of zinc and aluminum lamellas and a mineral chromium oxide bonding agent, which is burned in after the application, the screw connections are improved so that larger prestressing forces/tightening torques can be transmitted without damage to the screw connections.

  • Patent number: 6170917
Abstract: A pick-style tool that includes an elongate tool body with an axially forward end and an axially rearward end, and a hard insert affixed to the tool body at the axially forward end is disclosed. The hard insert comprises a WC-cermet comprising tungsten carbide and about 5 wt. % to 27 wt. % Co—Ni—Fe-binder. The Co—Ni—Fe-binder is unique in that even when subjected to plastic deformation, the binder substantially maintains its face centered cubic (fcc) crystal structure and avoids stress and/or strain induced transformations.
