  • Patent number: 7997660
Abstract: A sleeve utilizing two methods of retention—a friction fit and a rear retention feature—is disclosed. The sleeve includes a circumferentially compressible portion that provides a friction fit when inserted into a bore and includes a projected portion around an end circumference that is used to mate with the rear of a tool block and urges the sleeve (and the tool) rearward. The disclosure also relates to a tool and block assembly, a method of retaining a tool in a holder and a mining machine incorporating the sleeve.

  • Patent number: 7950745
Abstract: An improved bit assembly for road milling, mining, and trenching equipment includes a streamlined tip assembly that is a combination of conical and cylindrical in shape and devoid of protrusions or annular indentations that might impede the flow of removed material over and around the bit assembly or provide space for removed material to become clogged or imbedded on the tip assembly. The generally cylindrical hollow shank that mounts the bit holder to the bit block includes at least one axially aligned slot along its side wall that allows the side wall to bend supply radial force to maintain the bit holder in the bit block.

  • Patent number: 7922256
Abstract: A circular-shank tool including a shank held in a bore of a tool holder by a locking sleeve, the shank being rotatably held in the locking sleeve. The locking sleeve has one or more retaining elements that project inwards and engage in a peripheral groove in the shank of the tool, thus indisplaceably securing the locking sleeve in an axial direction on the shank of the tool. Because the locking sleeve is mirror-symmetrical to the central transversal plane, the locking sleeve can be fixed to the shank in a position that is rotated through 180°.

  • Patent number: 7922257
Abstract: A circular-shank tool including a tool holder for improving the centering of the shank of the circular-shank tool in the locking sleeve by a configuration of the retaining elements and to improve an ability of the shank to rotate in the sleeve. To achieve this, the retaining elements are distributed between two stamped edges that lie transversely with respect to a longitudinal axis of the locking sleeve and are stamped inwards or indented, the stamped edges extend over part of the circumference of the locking sleeve and are interspaced at a distance that corresponds to the width of the peripheral groove in the shank of the circular-shank tool and the retaining elements form a coaxial concave centering section facing the convex groove base of the peripheral groove.

Abstract: A tool pick assembly is provided for insertion in a first bore having a first diameter. The tool pick assembly includes a tool pick having a shank with a diameter sized for receipt in a second bore having a second diameter, the second diameter being smaller than the first diameter, an adaptive sleeve retainer having a thickness for stably supporting the shank of the tool pick in the first bore, and a washer for compressing the adaptive sleeve retainer to aid insertion into the first bore. The adaptive sleeve retainer is configured to spring radially outward to retain the tool pick in the first bore. A push out force for pushing the tool pick out from the first bore is approximately ±10% of a push out force for pushing out from the first bore a tool pick having a shank with a diameter sized for receipt in the first bore.

  • Patent number: 7780242
Abstract: A compressible sleeve for fitting around the shank of a rotatable tool has a cut out portion at the forward end thereof. The sleeve is compressed to a diameter less than the inner diameter of the bore of a tool holder by an annular wear ring having an inwardly directed projection that retains the cylindrical sleeve to a diameter that is less than the diameter of the bore of the tool holder. When the shank of the tool is driven into the bore of the tool holder, the wear ring is forced forwardly along the sleeve until the projection falls in the cut out portion of the sleeve allowing the sleeve to expand to the diameter of the bore of the tool holder and locking the wear ring from rotating with the tool.

  • Patent number: RE44690
Abstract: An improved bit holder with its mating bit block is disclosed utilizing a slight taper in the bit block bore, and a tapered shank on the bit holder that includes a second larger diameter tapered distal segment that combines with an axially oriented slot through the side wall of the bit holder shank to allow a substantially larger interference fit between the distal tapered shank segment and the bit block bore than previously known. When inserting the bit holder in the bit block bore, the distal first tapered segment resiliently collapses to allow insertion of that segment into the bit block bore. A second shank tapered portion axially inwardly of the first distal tapered portion. The dual tapered shank allows the insertion of the bit holder in the bit block with an interference fit that provides a secure mounting of the bit holder in the bit block.
