Patent number: 8961051Abstract: The device for tapping and inoculating trees includes an elongate, main arm having an actuating mechanism attached to one end and a housing attached to the opposite end. A cutting mechanism extends from one side of the housing and a spray system is disposed in a recess in the housing. A universal actuator operates both the cutting mechanism and the spray system upon activation by the actuating mechanism. The cutting mechanism taps or scrapes the bark off the target branch and the spray system sprays a solution that stimulates the tapped area into producing more sap and sap of higher quality.Type: GrantFiled: December 17, 2012Date of Patent: February 24, 2015Assignee: King Saud UniversityInventors: Hashim Ali El Atta, Ibrahim Mohamed Aref, Abdurrahman Ali Alazba, Sayeda Ali Ahmed Khalil, Kareem Khaled Mohamed

Publication number: 20040003500Abstract: A tree girdling technique that uses a water jet cutting device to effect girdling of a tree. After making an undercut in a tree, a girdler is wrapped about a tree at an elevation lower than the undercut and pressurized water with abrasive particles are dispensed from the girdler about the girth of the tree. The dispensing may be done either by rotating a port about the girth or by positioning a series of ports each arranged to direct the pressurized water with abrasive particles to flow in a stream at an oblique angle relative to the inner face of the girdler.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 25, 2003Publication date: January 8, 2004Inventor: Philippe R. Patent number: 5797437Abstract: A log peeler comprises a log peeling knife assembly 10 attached to a pulling cable 12, the pulling cable 12 being reeved around a powered cable drum 14. The pulling cable is attached at each end of the knife assembly so that the knife assembly will be pulled straight along a longitudinal line perpendicular to the orientation of the knife assembly. The powered cable drum 14 may be an engine or motor driven winch, where the engine or motor is an integral part of the assembly that includes the cable drum. The cable drum 14 is powered by a portable and detachable engine, such as a chain saw assembly 16. A remote control 82 may be located at or near the knife assembly so that the operator can engage or disengage the powered drum, as by closing or opening the chain saw trigger 17 through the action of a controller mechanism 84.Type: GrantFiled: April 3, 1997Date of Patent: August 25, 1998Inventor: Greg Beeson

Patent number: 5257457Abstract: A compact, hand-held cutting tool for manually girdling trees. The tool is generally L-shaped and includes an elongate body portion having a leading end and a trailing end, and a handle extending laterally from the trailing end for gripping by the operator. The elongate body portion has a substantially planar guide surface for contacting an outer surface section of the tree to be girdled. A generally U-shaped cutting blade is pivotally coupled to the elongate body proximate the trailing end. The angle of inclination of the cutting blade relative to the guide surface is adjustable to achieve an optimum depth cut in trees of varying diameter.Type: GrantFiled: August 24, 1992Date of Patent: November 2, 1993Inventor: Joel M. Cotter

Patent number: 4996773Abstract: A portable power cutting apparatus has a control unit with a support for mounting the control unit on one arm of the user permitting the control unit and cutting tool to be supported by that arm. The support is pivotal and a flexible cable operatively connects a motor to the cutting tool for driving the tool. This permits the control unit to be pivoted in a lateral direction or twisted to allow the operator to move the cutting head in a variety of positions without loss of power by moving only the supporting arm and hand of the user. A handle is provided on the control unit for gripping by the hand of the user's support arm. A cutting tool suitable for girdling a tree and which can also be used to cut through tree branches and small tree trunks is also disclosed. This cutting tool is frustoconical in shape having a length of chainsaw chain wrapped in a spinal groove around the outside face of this tool body.Type: GrantFiled: November 24, 1989Date of Patent: March 5, 1991Inventor: Graham B. Albertson

Patent number: 4916813Abstract: In a scrub-clearing tool of the type comprising a tube, a blade supported for rotation at one end of the tube, a motor for driving the blade and transmission shaft for connecting the drive motor to the blade, a disc is provided for protecting the blade and is mounted for rotation on the shaft of the blade with the interposition of a bearing. The protective disc has a diameter larger than the outer diameter of the blade and has a plurality of recesses around its periphery, the inner edges whereof are spaced from the center of the disc by a distance less than the radius of the outer circumference of the blade. The protective disc is normally rotated together with the blade. It stops when it comes into contact with the ground or with some obstacle, while the blade can continue to rotate by virtue of the presence of the bearing.Type: GrantFiled: December 30, 1988Date of Patent: April 17, 1990Assignee: Consiglio Nazionale Delle RicercheInventor: Pietro Elia

Patent number: 4682417Abstract: A carcass bone splitting tool having a rod-like shank being bent over at one end to form a handle. A foot member being connected at the other end of the rod-like shaft which is shaped to prevent rupture of entrails when the carcass is being opened. An elongate cutting blade member is mounted on the rod-like shank adjacent the foot member and is used for splitting open the bone of the carcass. A striker bar is also provided to drive the blade through the bone, such as the pelvic bone and breastbone, of the dead animal. The tool described herein is portable and when not in use, the blade is protected by the striker bar which can be carried by the splitting tool.Type: GrantFiled: May 5, 1986Date of Patent: July 28, 1987Inventors: Frederick L. Patent number: 4236308Abstract: In my co-pending application Ser. No. 949,811 of Oct. 10, 1978, now U.S. Pat. No. 4,188,718 I disclosed an improved device for "girdling" trees. That device effectively removes a complete circular band of bark and all that underlies the bark to the central portion of the tree so that fluid cannot pass from the root system of the tree to the upper portion of the tree whereby, with the elimination of such fluid transmission, the tree dies. In many areas, such girdling is practiced widely as a method of improving the ecology of the area for the dead trees are readily removed by being pushed over by a bulldozer. This invention relates to a construction of such a girdling device whereby the bark or other material caught between the cutting element during girdling can be readily removed.Type: GrantFiled: May 23, 1979Date of Patent: December 2, 1980Inventor: Edric W. Vredenburg, Sr.

Patent number: 4188718Abstract: A readily and easily manipulatable tree girdling device is provided which effectively removes a complete circular band of bark and all that underlies the bark to the central portion of the tree so that fluid cannot pass from the root system of the tree to the upper portion of the tree whereby with the elimination of such fluid transmission the tree dies. This operation is called "girdling." In many areas it is practiced widely as a method of improving the ecology of the area.Type: GrantFiled: October 10, 1978Date of Patent: February 19, 1980Inventor: Edric W. Vredenburg, Sr.

Patent number: 3998229Abstract: A double cutting blade with a center vertical blade, which slices a margin of tissue around the surgical site. This blade permits thereby the positive establishment of tumor or diseased tissue limits by delineating the margin of normal tissue that is free of tumor or diseased tissue. The vertical blade of the margin blade cuts a strip of skin or tissue out to form a trench of a width the same as the width between the knives wherever the margin blade, sometimes called a trenching blade, travels so that the resultant trench conforms exactly to the normal tissue surrounding the diseased tissue or tumor, thereby saving as much normal tissue as possible.Type: GrantFiled: July 22, 1975Date of Patent: December 21, 1976Inventor: Richard T. Barton
