End Pivot Patents (Class 30/253)
  • Patent number: 10220528
Abstract: Scissors, especially surgical scissors, having first and second elongate members each having a handle portion and a blade portion and being connected by a pivot between the handle portions and the blade portions for relative pivotal movement generally in a cutting plane during a cutting stroke. At least one of the handle portions supports a channel member having a length that extends toward, embraces and extends beyond the handle portion of the other elongate member to restrain movement of the handle portions out of the cutting plane and thus to resist relative lateral movement of the blade portions away from each other during the cutting stroke. The scissors are robust and are able to cleanly, effectively and accurately cut tough or slippery items which might otherwise cause the blades to splay away from each other.

The first and second blades are pivotally coupled at respective distal ends thereof relative to a user and are movable between open and closed configurations in response to corresponding movements of the first and second handles. At a closed configuration, the second blade overlies the first blade while the second blade is offset approximately 90 degrees from the first blade at the open configuration. The first blade defines a slot extending longitudinally therealong for receiving the peaked top of a carton therein. One longitudinal edge of the slot presents a sharp cutting edge. The second blade includes a slightly convex cutting edge such that a peaked top of a carton that is positioned in the slot is pinched and severed upon a movement of the second blade between open and closed configurations.

  • Publication number: 20030126747
Abstract: A somewhat broad grip has been attached by a screw at the outer edge Of each of the 2 blades that comprise the scissors. A free-standing scissor has been invented in which the grips have been given a shape that make them easy to grasp by hand, and on the grips' outer surfaces, support in sections to enable free-standing have been provided such that they are nearly perpendicular to the plane of the blades. Further, the 2 blades are attached by a shaft, and at the rear of the shaft, a spring has been attached inside the grips, assisting in the opening of the blade tips, and keeping the blades always able to cut materials such as paper. Therefore, with the invention placed on a desk or other flat surface, if the front of the top grip is pressed from above, the blade tips close, enabling cutting of materials such as paper, and when the user's hand is released, the blade tips open again, enabling use even by persons with little fingertip strength.

  • Patent number: 4507864
Abstract: Cutting shears or scissors have pivotally connected blades and shank portions extending at an acute angle with respect to the cutting edges of the blades wherein handles of the shears connected to the shank portions lie forward of the pivot connection between the blades in the direction of cut of material to be cut by the shears. The shears handles are configured such that the handle to be grasped by the fingers of the operator's hand is fixed to a blade which has a surface adapted for supporting the shears during use thereof. The other blade is provided with a handle particularly adapted for receiving the thumb wherein rotation of the thumb together with thrust of the forearm in the direction of cut or closing action yields a large mechanical advantage without substantial manual effort.

  • Patent number: 4412380
Abstract: A hose cutoff device or tool is disclosed which is especially adapted for cutting lengths of hose for use in hose assemblies for automotive air-conditioning systems. The device or tool comprises a base which is provided with axially-spaced, axially aligned, tubes for the reception of the hose to be cut, and with a manually-operable handle which is pivotally secured to the base, and is provided with a cutter blade which is movable through the hose to sever the hose into desired lengths. The cutter blade is of unique design or construction, is removably secured to the handle, and can be quickly and easily replaced when worn. A guard is provided for limiting movement of the handle away from the base and for partially enclosing the cutter blade.

  • Patent number: 4223439
Abstract: Manually operated cutting pliers in which two hinged plier grips are spread apart by spring action. One of the plier grips has a fixture, whereas the other grip actuates a jaw movable relative to the fixed jaw by a sliding drive. At least one of the two jaws on a side facing the other, has a cutting edge. The two plier jaws can be enclosed around a workpiece to form a closed jaw arrangement with a width which can be reduced to substantially zero by opening and closing the two plier grips. The movable jaw may be pivotally mounted on the outer end of the fixed jaw and is formed by a clamp to be placed around the workpiece. During closure, the clamp engages the sliding drive, and when it is actuated, the workpiece is gradually pinched between the jaws and finally split.

  • Patent number: 4092776
Abstract: A cutting tool comprising a one-piece plastic tongs having flat cutting blades disposed at the free ends thereof, the U-shaped portion of the tongs acting as a torsion spring to urge the blades into the proper cutting relationship as the legs of the tongs are moved together, the torsion spring portion being biased to urge the legs of the tongs to a normal fully open position and being loaded by distorting the U-shaped portion through relative movement of the legs from the normal fully open position to a latched position in which the cutting edges of the blades are exposed for cutting.

  • Patent number: 4060892
Abstract: A cutter, simple in construction but having good cutting quality and durability, for cutting paper in a semicylindrically curled state. With radii equal to or approximate to the radius of curvature of the paper to be cut, a stationary blade having a semicircular receding contour and a movable blade having an at least semicircular extending contour are spring-biased into pressure contact edgewise. The distance between the centers of the blades is greater than the difference between the blade radii so that the movable blade can always move in contact at only one point with the stationary blade during cutting operation.

  • Patent number: 4020846
Abstract: An instrument for removing splinters embedded in skin has a pair of pincers that extend generally in a first direction and are mutually spaced apart in a second direction transverse to the first direction. Each pincer is substantially broader in a third direction orthogonal to the first and second directions than in the second direction. A free or working end of each pincer, also broader in the third direction than the second direction, converges convexly to a tip. The leading edges of the working ends, defined by the junction of the interior facing surfaces of the working ends and the outwardly facing exterior surfaces, are sharpened to facilitate the penetration of the instrument to the embedded splinter. The interior facing surfaces of the working ends adjacent the leading edges are preferably hollowed to prevent blocking.
