  • Patent number: 5557853
Abstract: A cloth cutting machine having a base mounted on at one end of an upright standard, and a motor mounted on the other end of that standard. A cloth cutting knife is connected to the standard, and is driven by the motor. A handle connected to the machine is manually gripped by the machine's operator to guide it during use. An air handler device connected to the machine is structured, in preferred form, to direct cooling air against the machine operator's hand which manually grips the handle. Also in preferred form, the cooling device includes a cooling air distribution manifold defined in the standard, that manifold having a hand air port at one end oriented to direct cooling air toward the handle, and a base air port at the other end which exhausts cooling air substantially rearwardly from the standard relative to the cutting direction of the machine so as to cool the standard.

  • Patent number: 5136904
Abstract: Powered coping saw systems and corresponding methods of cutting workpieces with powered coping saws are provided by this invention, which holds a workpiece stationary and moves the reciprocating saw blade relative to the workpiece. By disposing the workpiece in different planes and at different angular orientation, two dimensional and three dimensional cuts may be made. The saw motor is in a frame pivotable about a base, and drives a reciprocating saw blade holding second frame pivoted in turn on the first frame to move the powered saw blade over a two dimensional cutting range generally perpendicular to the saw blade. Relative positioning of a workpiece, such as a longitudinally disposed contoured molding strip which is to be cut for matching corner mounts, for angular positioning with respect to the saw blade permits two dimensional and three dimensional cutting patterns to be followed in the workpiece.

  • Patent number: 4698910
Abstract: A safety device is provided for a cloth cutting machine having a motor driven cutting blade and a presser foot rod. The safety device (10) includes a housing (30) which in one embodiment serves as a magnetic concentrator. This housing (30) carries an electromagnet (40) which selectively activates a stopping mechanism (60) which secures the presser foot rod (16) at a selected location while the machine (12) is in operation. Upon termination of the cutting operation, the safety device (10) releases the presser foot rod (16) and allows the rod to slide under the force of gravity to its extended position such that the cutting blade (22) is shielded. In the preferred embodiment, a control circuit is provided for selectively energizing and de-energizing the electromagnet (40) which operates the stopping mechanism (60). This control mechanism releases the presser foot rod (16) upon termination of the machine operation.
