Patent number: 7587828Abstract: A cutting head for a brush cutter, edge trimmer or similar, the head comprises a passageway (112) for a cutter string (300) and at least one curved surface (120) for supporting the string, the surface extending between an exit region (115) for said string from said passageway and a peripheral region of the head. According to the invention, the passageway extends (A) in a manner that is offset from an axis of rotation (C) of the head so as to present an inside edge constituted by its edge closest to said axis of rotation, said inner edge corresponding to a trailing edge of the string while the head is rotating, and the curved portion extends from said inner edge. This serves to reduce the radius of curvature of the curved portion without needing to increase the diameter of the head.Type: GrantFiled: January 23, 2004Date of Patent: September 15, 2009Assignee: Speed FranceInventor: Emmanuel Legrand

Publication number: 20090223065Abstract: A trimmer head for use in a flexible line rotary trimmer including a housing adapted to be operatively connected to the trimmer to effect rotation of the head and a spool operatively connected to the housing for rotation therewith. The spool defines at least one inwardly extending line receptor channel, preferably formed by a plurality of inwardly tapered walls so as to be polygonal in cross-section. So configured, the channel walls will securely grip the cutting line upon the line being inserted in the channel and wound about the spool. To provide uniform winding of the line, a plurality of cam, cam abutment and sliding surfaces are operatively connected to the housing and spool such that when the spool is manually rotated relative to the housing in the drive direction, the spool is caused to reciprocate axially within the housing evenly distributing the line about the body of the spool.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 26, 2007Publication date: September 10, 2009Applicant: Proulx Manufacturing, Inc.Inventor: Richard A. Patent number: 7581322Abstract: A trimmer head for use in a flexible line rotary trimmer including a housing adapted to be operatively connected to the trimmer to effect rotation of the head and a spool operatively connected to the housing for rotation therewith. The spool defines at least one inwardly extending line receptor channel defining surface irregularities therein for securely gripping the cutting line upon an end portion of the line being inserted in the channel and the spool rotated with respect to the housing. The channel is preferably tapered inwardly to hold different line sizes. To provide uniform winding of the line about the spool, the operative connection between the spool and the housing effects relative reciprocal motion therebetween when the spool is manually rotated relative to the housing.Type: GrantFiled: October 30, 2007Date of Patent: September 1, 2009Assignee: Proulx Manufacturing, Inc.Inventor: Richard A. Publication number: 20090188354Abstract: A dual handled, single throttle trigger trimmer comprising rotating handles and a rotating trimmer head. The rotating handles allow the use of the trimmer in a trimming mode and an edging mode. The device may be readily converted between the two modes and the lawn care worker must not remove either hand from the device while doing so. The conversion is accomplished by rotating the trimmer upper handle about an axis perpendicular to the trimmer driveshaft while simultaneously rotating the trimmer middle handle about an axis parallel to the trimmer driveshaft. The middle handle has a slide fit around the trimmer driveshaft.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 28, 2008Publication date: July 30, 2009Inventor: David Harris

Publication number: 20090172955Abstract: An improved string trimmer head is described. The trimmer head comprises a housing with a spool and spring assembly enclosed within the housing. The trimmer head further comprises a lid connected to the housing and a bump knob with a base and an intermediate member. The base of the bump knob is located inside the housing. The intermediate member extends outside the housing through the lid. The lid comprises an annulus which surrounds the base. The height of the annulus is greater than a maximum compressing distance of the spool when compressed by the bump knob. A segment of the intermediate member remains outside the lid when the spool is compressed. The bump knob further comprises a finger slot with an outer edge and a recessed portion. A bottom side of the outer edge is positioned farther away from the spool than the recessed portion.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 3, 2008Publication date: July 9, 2009Inventors: John F.
