Publication number: 20040093734Abstract: A cutting apparatus has been produced that eliminates the common occurrence of raw razor blades contaminating everything from food and food products to garbage cans to shelves in retail stores. Furthermore, the cutting apparatus comprises a guard assembly that, when activated, opens the blade cover and allows only one cut to be made with the exposed blade before the unidirectionally-locking blade cover snaps back over the exposed blade, thus preventing laceration-related accidents. In addition, if the operator continues to activate the guard assembly (squeezing, pulling and/or depressing the trigger and/or releasing the trigger and continuing to hold it in the released position during and after the cut has been made) after one cut has been made with the exposed blade, the unidirectionally-locking blade cover will still snap back over the exposed blade, despite the position of the trigger.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 19, 2002Publication date: May 20, 2004Inventor: Earl Votolato

Patent number: 6536115Abstract: The present invention provides a knife with a replaceable blade which is spring-biased in the retracted position. The knife is designed such that the blade can only be extended by exerting a downward force and by turning the handle with respect to an inner housing. The handle has a tab affixed to the inside wall of the handle. The inner housing has an angled slot in its wall adapted to receive the tab. When the blade is fully retracted, the tab rests on the shoulder at the top of the inner housing. A straight downward pressure on the handle causes the tab to engage the shoulder and will not allow the blade to extend. When the handle is rotated, the tab enters the slot and the blade is forced downward. As this occurs, the blade extends through a slot at the bottom of a blade cover. When the blade is removed from the object to be cut, the spring forces the handle to move with respect to the inner housing and causes the blade to retract within the blade cover.Type: GrantFiled: October 30, 1998Date of Patent: March 25, 2003Inventors: James Tabbi, John E. Bernacki, Christopher J. Hughson, James A. Herley

Patent number: 6487948Abstract: A food scoring knife of the presently preferred embodiment has an ergonomic handle portion and a head portion. A bottom edge of the handle portion is convex, while a bottom edge of the head portion is linear. During scoring, the user applies gentle pressure to the scoring knife, in particular, by placing fingers on a tapered finger rest, and at gripping indented sides of the handle portion. A tapered blade in the bottom edge of the head portion has a sharp cutting edge angled back toward the handle portion. The sharp edge slashes the surface of the food item as the scoring knife is pulled by the user. The convex bottom edge helps the user avoid dragging a bottom surface of the handle portion along the food item while scoring.Type: GrantFiled: October 18, 1999Date of Patent: December 3, 2002Inventor: Elias A. Alfi

Patent number: 5943780Abstract: The cutter of my invention is a unitary device that does not require a utility knife, only a blade. The cutter exposes twice the blade length of a conventional utility knife, i.e., approximately 2.2 inches. The blade can be extended into the insulation over 4 inches. The cutter has a blade guard (to keep fingers out of the way, etc.). The cutter also has a safety mechanism to guard against accidental exposure of the blade (you have to grip the tool by the handle to allow the blade to be exposed). The cutter also has an added leverage point directly in front of the grip to increase the amount of pressure you can exert on the insulation. This cutter compresses and cut in one continuous motion, i.e. the same motion does both compressing and cutting.Type: GrantFiled: April 7, 1998Date of Patent: August 31, 1999Inventor: Edward T. The pulling cable is attached at each end of the knife assembly so that the knife assembly will be pulled straight along a longitudinal line perpendicular to the orientation of the knife assembly. The powered cable drum 14 may be an engine or motor driven winch, where the engine or motor is an integral part of the assembly that includes the cable drum. The cable drum 14 is powered by a portable and detachable engine, such as a chain saw assembly 16. A remote control 82 may be located at or near the knife assembly so that the operator can engage or disengage the powered drum, as by closing or opening the chain saw trigger 17 through the action of a controller mechanism 84.Type: GrantFiled: April 3, 1997Date of Patent: August 25, 1998Inventor: Greg Beeson
