  • Patent number: 8037612
Abstract: A handheld tactical knife comprising a hilt and an elongated knife blade with a substantially triangular cross section. A spine runs on the top of said elongated knife blade, and tapers from the hilt to a tip of the blade. A main cutting edge is located on the bottom of said elongated knife blade, and at least one scallop is cut into the main cutting edge. At least one scallop transitions into a gut hook with a gut hook tip, and a flat spreading surface is located between the gut hook tip and the tip of the blade. The substantially triangular cross section of the elongated knife blade transitions to a substantially trapezoidal cross section at the flat spreading surface.

  • Patent number: 7930829
Abstract: A compact utility knife includes a blade holder slidably connected to a handle. A trapezoidal utility blade detachably mounts to the blade holder via a blade lock mechanism. A slide lock mechanism selectively retains the blade holder in its extended or retracted position relative to the handle. When the blade holder is extended, the blade holder and a majority of the blade extend forwardly of a forwardmost point of the handle. Extending the blade holder significantly increases an overall length of the knife such that the knife is comfortable to use when in the extended position and longitudinally compact when in the retracted position. The slide assembly device includes a housing with a first engaging member having a first protrusion and a second engaging member having a second protrusion releasably engaged with the tabs. The slide assembly device also includes a rocker attached to the housing that is operatively connected to at least one of the engaging members. The rocker is operable for disengaging the first protrusion or second protrusion with respect to the tabs. Disengaging one of the first and second protrusions by the rocker allows sliding movement of the slide assembly device with respect to the body.

  • Patent number: 7395600
Abstract: A utility knife has a disposable blade cartridge in its handle that has front and rear blade compartments. Each compartment is sized to hold a plurality of blades in side-by-side relation. Fresh blades are disposed in the front compartment and one end of each is advanced one at a time substantially out of the compartment into operative position by a carrier that is controlled by an actuator on the handle. When the active blade is to be replaced, it is moved by the carrier into the rear compartment, and a new blade may then be withdrawn from the front compartment into the operative position. The active blade when not in use is withdrawn into the case. When the one end of all the blades in the front compartment are used the cartridge is reversed, placing what was the rear compartment at the front, and the unused end of each blade is advanced into the operative position and when each is used it is moved to the rear compartment. When all are used, a new cartridge replaces the old in the knife.

  • Patent number: 7325313
Abstract: A cutting device includes (i) a housing having first and second separable portions, the first portion having a locking aperture, the second portion having an attachment aperture, and (ii) a locking apparatus for removably locking the first and second portions of the housing. The locking apparatus includes an attachment portion for being fixedly attached in the attachment aperture, and a locking arm adapted to be releasably locked into the locking aperture. The attachment aperture and locking aperture are correspondingly positioned so that the locking arm becomes aligned with the locking aperture when the first and second portions of the housing are aligned for assembly. The housing may be constructed of metal, and the locking apparatus constructed of plastic. The locking apparatus may also include a return spring and blade carrier integrally molded therewith.

Abstract: A utility knife includes a housing and a blade carrier movably mounted to the housing. The blade carrier includes a blade supporting surface for supporting a blade, wherein the blade carrier is movable between a retracted position with at least a substantial portion of the blade retracted in the housing, and a first extended position with at least a portion of the blade extending outwardly of the housing. An actuator is operably connected to the blade carrier and is operable to move the blade carrier between the retracted and extended positions to, in turn, move a blade located on the blade carrier between the retracted and extended positions. A biasing member biases the blade carrier toward the retracted position. A stop member is movable between a first position and a second position.

Abstract: A utility knife has a blade carriage having a blade-receiving bay and moveable relative to the knife's housing to move a cutting blade disposed in the bay from a retracted position to a deployed position. A locking mechanism is operative to releasably couple the cutting blade to the carriage and may include a lock plate having an blade-engagement element and moveable by non-pivoting, generally vertical displacement between a locked position and an unlocked position. An actuator engages the locking mechanism and moves the locking mechanism from the locked position to the unlocked position. The actuator may directly contact an underside of a protrusion of the locking mechanism, may be moveably mounted on the sidewall to which the bay opens toward, may be prevented from being moved as far when the actuator is not aligned with the locking mechanism, or any combination thereof.

  • Patent number: 7159713
Abstract: A sharps blade protection device is disclosed that adapts to currently used scalpel handles but uniquely is also usable with other existing styles of sharps including kitchen and hobby knives. This invention is adaptable over a broad range of sharps devices enabling users of many different sharps to be protected during and after use. The device is designed so that the user can easily insert and remove the sharp so that training of use is minimized if needed at all. The device is usable with a single hand, and both left handed or right handed operators are able to use all of the benefits of this device with equal ease. Device can include a member whereby it removes the tang portion of a surgical scalpel blade from the holder on the scalpel and places it onto a retention post, where it remains until the blade is safety removed from the handle by a movement of the blade guard.

Abstract: A disposable guarded surgical scalpel includes a handle with a blade fixed to it and a slidably mounted guard. The guard can be moved using a single hand. When the scalpel is in use the guard is moved to a retracted position where the blade is exposed; the guard locks in this position to prevent any unintentional movement. When the scalpel is not in use, the guard is moved to an extended position where the blade is covered. When the scalpel has been used on a patient the guard is moved to a disposal position beyond the extended position thus exposing a visual indicia on the handle that indicates that the scalpel should not be reused. The guard also has grooves on the outer surface so as to provide better grip to a surgeon during operation.
