Patent number: 7603783Abstract: A plane such as a low angle jack plane having an adjustable toe that cannot inadvertently slide backwards in the plane body so that it contacts and possibly damages the plane blade. A threaded stop mounted in the plane body bears against the toe establishing the point to which the toe can slide back in the plane body. Rotation of the threaded stop moves the end of the stop by small, easily controlled increments, making it easy to change the width of the mouth while preventing contact between the toe and the plane blade.Type: GrantFiled: June 21, 2005Date of Patent: October 20, 2009Assignee: Lee Valley Tools, Ltd.Inventors: Robin C. Patent number: 7444750Abstract: A scraper plane used in woodworking and providing a blade having an adjustable angle as well as adjustable camber. Varying the camber of the blade creates various sized regions of contact between the cutting edge of the blade and the workpiece. Variable camber provides increased control and improved function.Type: GrantFiled: August 9, 2004Date of Patent: November 4, 2008Assignee: Lee Valley Tools, Ltd.Inventor: Terry R. Saunders

Patent number: 7377044Abstract: This invention relates to an articulated iron cap for a hand plane. The iron cap pivotally mounts to a hand plane. The iron cap for the hand plane mates to either a beveled down iron or a bevel up iron. One embodiment of the invention has a chip breaker for engaging the iron where the chip breaker pivots approximately perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the hand plane. A nose piece on the chip breaker may be configured to extend and pivot so as to align with the grind angle on the iron. This invention places a mass near the cuffing edge of the iron which allows for preloading the iron and dampening vibration of the iron. In turn, this all creates a smoother more accurate cut and requires less effort to use.Type: GrantFiled: August 29, 2005Date of Patent: May 27, 2008Assignee: Fine Tools, LLCInventor: John J. Patent number: 7117602Abstract: A plane such as a shoulder plane having at least two set screws positioned in apertures in the body, the set screws adapted to bear against opposite sides of the blade laterally to adjust the blade in position. An adjustment assembly is also provided, where rotation of a knob adjusts longitudinal movement of a traveler component, and laterally pivoting the knob allows lateral movement of the blade to the extent permitted by the set screws. A knob for rotational readjustment of the handle is also provided.Type: GrantFiled: August 9, 2004Date of Patent: October 10, 2006Assignee: Lee Valley Tools, Ltd.Inventor: Terry R. Saunders

Patent number: 6931733Abstract: A carpenter's combination plane comprised of a basic holder and a blade holder, adapted with various holder accessories depending on the size of the work surface and the distance of reciprocal planing; other auxiliary accessories may be provided to the holder accessories to define the width, depth, inclined surface of the work surface or the polishing work surface.Type: GrantFiled: October 15, 2002Date of Patent: August 23, 2005Inventor: Kun-Meng Lin

Patent number: 6718642Abstract: A method and apparatus for a blade clamping mechanism in a woodworking plane that allows a plane iron as wide as the plane body itself to be clamped in a wedge shaped slot in the plane body. The slot begins at a point tangent to a waste ejection hole proximate a front area of the plane running diagonally towards the spine of the plane body before looping back short of the spine to return diagonally through the sole forming the mouth together with the waste hole. The loop forms the widest point of the slot, while the tangent forms the narrowest point of the slot. The rear surface of the slot serves as the ramp for the plane iron. The plane iron is clamped by a floating pin mounted in a hole drilled longitudinally through the spine, perpendicular to the ramp, and terminating at an inspection hole. The floating pin is retained between the under side of the plane iron and a conical shaped point of a screw threaded from a back of the plane body diagonally to the floating pin.Type: GrantFiled: February 6, 2002Date of Patent: April 13, 2004Inventor: David Collins

Patent number: 6615497Abstract: Bench planes of different sizes having interchangeable components and an adjustable frog providing full blade support with a frog foot that extends through the plane body mouth to terminate co-planer or nearly co-planer with the sole. The rear plane handle or tote is captured between and secured soley to tines projecting from the frog that is adjustably secured to alternative sizes of plane bodies in a manner permitting forward and backward adjustment of the frog position without removing the plane blade. Superior lateral blade position control is provided by set screws in the plane body and contacting blade side edges. Adjustments in the blade cutting angle without modifying the angle at which the blade is held by the frog in the plane may be made by forming a front bevel on the front surface of the blade.Type: GrantFiled: February 27, 2001Date of Patent: September 9, 2003Assignee: Lee Valley Tools, Ltd.Inventors: Terry Ross Saunders, Lloyd Sevack, Leonard G. Patent number: 5694696Abstract: A scraper plane and plane insert that substitutes, in the place of a conventional plane iron or blade and cap iron, a bracket formed by bending sheet mild steel to form two arms, one of which is secured to the frog and the other of which holds a scraper blade in a substantially upright position. Small adjustments in the angle between the scraper blade and plane sole can be made by actuating a micro-adjustment mechanism that forms a bridge between the support arm and securing arm of the bracket.Type: GrantFiled: August 12, 1996Date of Patent: December 9, 1997Assignee: Lee Valley Tools Ltd.Inventors: Leonard G. Patent number: 4704795Abstract: A scraper device comprises a carrier presenting a working face and including two slot formations disposed at different angles to the plane of the working face. An elongate scraper blade, such as a conventional hack saw blade, is releasably mountable in either one of the slot formations in either of two operative positions. In each of the operative positions the working edge of the scraper blade protrudes transversely from the working face and portion of the scraper blade can project from the carrier on at least one side of the carrier to permit a projecting portion of the scraper blade to be severed from a portion of the blade which is operatively mounted on the carrier.Type: GrantFiled: February 21, 1986Date of Patent: November 10, 1987Inventor: John V.
