Abstract: A letter opening device is provided. The letter opening device includes a generally rectangular body having a letter opening blade for opening envelopes. The body is formed from a molded plastic material and is suitable for being hand held, and the letter opening blade is molded partially within the plastic molded body. The device further includes a sheet-like material cutter having a coupon cutting blade. A portion of the coupon cutting blade is exposed exteriorly of the body whereby the exposed portion can be manipulated to selectively separate sections of sheet-like materials such as paper and plastic sheets.

Abstract: A piercing-cutting device for plastic wrap removed from an object, which includes a handle, a complex blade connected to the handle, the complex blade having a piercing blade section and a cutting blade section, the piercing blade section and the cutting blade section being at substantially right angles to one another, and the cutting blade section being a concave, crescent cutting blade. In some present embodiments, the piercing blade section and the cutting blade section are located contiguously and establish a generally L-shaped or T-shaped relationship relative to one another. In other embodiments the handle is elongated with an imaginary centerline and the complex blade is connected to the handle so as to extend outwardly therefrom at a substantially right angle from the imaginary center line. In yet other present embodiments, the piercing-cutting device of the handle has a front and the complex blade extends outwardly from the front of the handle.

Abstract: A cutting apparatus (10) comprising a cutting assembly (11) mounted on a mounting member/actuation member (12) which is pivotally connected to an article support member (13) having a receiving portion (14). In use a user may, by tightening his or her grip about the apparatus (10) overcome the resistance provided by the leaf spring (25) and thereby urge the free ends of the mounting member (12) and the article support member (13) together such that the incising end portion (16) of the blade assembly (11) extends through the slit (30) and engages the complementary shaped recess (14) so as to form an incision in the article (50). The user may, while maintaining sufficient pressure on the mounting member/actuating member (12), draw or slide the apparatus (10) relative to the material in a general direction indicated by arrow (51), for example, such that the cutting edge (18) cuts the portion of the material (50) which it bears against.

Abstract: A letter opening device, having a letter opening blade for opening envelopes which is molded partially within a plastics molded body suitable for being hand held and for cutting open envelopes is provided with a generally rectangular recess in the body of a size to receive a business card, or the like, therein for display laterally for the body. Card retaining tabs are molded integrally of the body to retain the business card within the recess and a transparent flexible window member is provided for overlying the card in the recess. End tabs are formed integrally of the window member which cooperate with slots formed in the body to maintain the window member in assembled relation to the letter opener device in overlying relation to the business card being displayed by the letter opener device.

Abstract: An opener for envelopes that includes a flat member with a straight slot that defines a pointed portion to facilitate its insertion between the flap and the rest of the envelope. A bay at the end of the slot coincides with the cutout of a removable blade kit that is received within a channel that runs at an angle with respect to the straight slot. A locking protuberance and a cooperating cavity are provided to keep the blade kit in place.

Abstract: A combination hand held device having an elongated central gripping portion with a razor type slitter held therein and a staple remover formed thereon. The letter slitter includes an elongated finger formed adjacent the razor type slitter along one side of the elongated central gripping portion and the staple remover is formed at one end of the elongated central gripping portion.

Abstract: A hand held device for cutting through shrink-wrapped packaging surrounding a package such as a compact disc case, which will allow the user to more easily remove the compact disc case from the packaging. The hand held device includes a cutting blade sized to cut through shrink-wrapped packaging of a predetermined thickness, and a holder for guiding its movement.

Abstract: A bandage cutter which includes a short, thick, relatively blunt ended finger which extends in spaced generally parallel relation along one edge of a generally flat disk-shaped handle. The finger curves to a terminal end; and the finger defines a throat between it and the handle with an open mouth. Preferably, a thickened rim is provided about the throat protectively shielding the cutting edge of a blade spanning the throat. The blade of stainless steel presents a cutting edge at a slope of about 45.degree. to the edge of a bandage. A curved rocker surface on the handle is provided to manipulate the cutter to a preferred cutting angle while a bandage is held taut for initiating a slicing action. The handle includes a bearing surface for pushing by the index finger of a user while simultaneously the handle is grasped between the thumb and middle finger, on opposite sides of the handle respectively, to orient the attitude of the cutter while slicing action takes place.

Abstract: A package opener that can be used safely to open packages, such a jewel boxes containing compact discs, that are encapsulated within thin outer coverings. The device includes an edge guide channel into which a cutting edge extends so that the device can be guided along a selected edge of the package to precisely cut the covering to permit its easy removal from the package.

Abstract: Envelope opening machine which is relatively small in size and suitable for use on table tops. The machine has a milling cutter and a pair of belts for feeding envelopes from a hopper past the cutter. The belts extend obliquely with respect to the path of the envelopes and tend to hold the envelopes tightly against a guide on one side of the path for precise alignment with the cutter. A removable chaff tray is located at the front of the machine, with a window for viewing the amount of chaff that has been collected. A removable cover overlies the belts and cutter, with hold-down wheels for maintaining the envelopes in contact with the belts and an interlock switch for deactuating the cutter when the cover is removed.

Abstract: A cutter useful for opening relatively thin flat packages such as IV bags has a handle and a slot which receives the marginal edge of the package. A recessed blade within the slot severs the margin of the package, the slot being sufficiently narrow as to prevent either the contents of the package or the figures of the user from accidental contact with the blade.

Abstract: The present invention is directed to a letter opening device comprising an elongated tubular handle, a removable tubular cap and a generally L-shaped cutting guide including a cutting blade and a blade holder. The cutting guide is affixed to the forward end of the tubular handle and has an elongated nose portion which is adapted to fit underneath the flap of an envelope to be opened. The elongated nose portion has an elongated groove for receiving the sharp tip of the cutting blade. The blade holder is pivotally mounted to the cutting guide and can be moved to easily replace the blade. An elongated safety shield is slidably mounted inside the tubular handle for shielding the blade when the letter opening device is not in use. The shield has an actuating member attached thereto for moving the shield within the tubular handle.

Abstract: A bag-opening device having a first plate with a first perimeter extending therearound, a second plate connected to the first plate and having a second perimeter extending therearound, and a blade affixed to one of the first and second plates and positioned generally centrally therein. The first and second plates are movable between a first bag-receiving position and a second bag-opening position. The first and second plates have a V-shaped configuration in the first position and are in parallel relationship in the second position. The blade is positioned perpendicular to the plates in the second position. The first and second plates are integrally formed together of a memory-retentive polymeric material. The first plate has a first neck extending rearwardly therefrom. The second plate has a second neck extending rearwardly therefrom. These necks have a width less than a width of the first and second plates.

Abstract: A bag opening and resealing device is formed of a longitudinally elongated body member having a longitudinally extending bag-receiving slot that extends from one end of the body, where the slot is flared to facilitate entry of a bag to be cut, and terminates inwardly of the opposite end of the body. Perpendicular to the slot, the body is provided with a guide slot which terminates inwardly of the opposite ends of the body and extends transversely through the body, and a knife holder is received slidably in the guide slot and mounts a knife blade in position to intercept the bag-receiving slot, wherein, with a bag contained in the bag-receiving slot, movement of the knife holder along its guide slot effects cutting of the bag.

Abstract: A cutter can rapidly and safely cut the edge of a variety of paper products and a variety of strings and other materials used for packaging. The cutter has a pair of holders laminated to each other, a pair of open-close bodies which are rotatably supported at edge portions of the holders, respectively and form a cutting area through which a paper product can be passed, and a cutting blade which is mounted to the edge portions of the holders and has a cutting edge protruding into the cutting area.

Abstract: A business card letter opener having printed indicia on one surface and a recess in the opposite surface sized to accomodate a business card and covered by a transparent cover lens which slides over the recess and is snap locked into place over the recess to protect the card and allow it to be viewed through the cover lens.

Abstract: A cutter is described for cutting through an article, such as an envelope, at a given distance from its edge, approximately straight and parallel to the edge. An edge portion of the article to be cut, such as an envelope, is positioned on a floor, and then it is slid with its edge in contact with a sliding side surface perpendicular to the floor. The thing to be cut is pressed against the sliding surface with a press means when cut and slashed with a blade edge at a given distance from the envelope edge approximately straight and parallel to the edge.

Abstract: An easily assembled and disassembled device for cutting a tape from a roll of tape and opening an envelope which includes a push button member having a cutting blade and a push button, a tape guiding member supported on an envelope inserting member and a roll tape supporting member assembled therewith and the push button member, whereby when push button is downwardly pushed, the tape disposed on the tape guiding member or an envelope inserted into the envelope inserting member is easily and straightly cut by the cutting blade of the push button member.

Abstract: A cutter for cutting the holded edge of folded paper sheets or the like is disclosed, which comprises a box-like casing, a channel-like groove provided in the casing along one edge thereof, the folded edge of folded paper sheets or the like being fed through the groove, a pair of leaf springs disposed such as to oppose each other in and along the groove and in a close proximity of or in forced contact with each other to form a paper sheet folded edge guide region substantially in a central portion of the groove in the length direciton thereof, a cutter blade holder carrying a cutter blade having a cutting end extending in the paper sheet folded edge guide region and removably mounted in the casing, and a cutter blade holder stopper mechanism for restraining and releasing the cutter blade holder with respect to the casing.

Abstract: A package opening tool is useful for opening packages made of cellophane and other flexible plastic materials. The package opening tool comprises first and second plates pivotally connected at their respective back ends. The two plates are biased, as by a living hinge or a spring, to an open configuration whereat there is a V-shaped gap between the plates. The first plate has a cutter that faces the second plate. A package is inserted into the gap, and the tool is operated to a closed configuration by squeezing the front ends of the two plates together to cause the cutter to penetrate the package. A recess in the second plate receives the entire cutter when the tool is in the closed configuration. Then pulling the package from between the closed tool slices the package for easy further opening. The first plate preferably has a wall around the cutter to restrict access to the cutter. In some embodiments, positive stops limit the relative locations of the two plates in the open and closed configurations.

Abstract: A tool for obliquely severing flower stems comprises a housing having a passage for inserting thereinto a flower stem to be severed, and a cutting blade extending between the opposing side walls of the passage. The cutting edge of the cutting blade is directed in the inserting direction and obliquely towards a bottom wall of the housing. A spring blade is mounted to the bottom wall of the housing. The cutting blade is mounted relative to the spring blade in such a way that the cutting blade and the spring blade are at a minimum distance from each other in a non-use condition but are permitted to be pushed apart against the action of a slight force of the spring blade when a stem to be severed is inserted into the passage.

Abstract: A bag opener of a generally "U" shaped configuration formed of a memory retentent polymeric material, including a first leg and a second leg arranged parallel relative to one another in a first position, and wherein a blade member is mounted within an interior surface of the first leg arranged parallel to beveled terminal ends of the legs to receive a bag therethrough, wherein the blade member is directed across the surface of a bag inserted between the interior surfaces of the leg members to sever a bag positioned therewithin.

Abstract: A device for opening envelopes which comprises a rotatable shaft having an elongate recess in line with the axis of the shaft. A first cutting blade is located on the top edge of the recess and a second cutting blade is secured to a base which supports the shaft. The first and second blades are positioned such that they co-act in a shearing action on rotation of the shaft. To open an envelope, the edge of the envelope is positioned within the recess and the shaft is rotated causing the blades to co-act resulting in a sliver being cut from the envelope.

Abstract: An implement is provided for opening letter envelopes comprised of a body defining a handle and an envelope receiving crevice of a predetermined width and length. A blade is disposed within the body and has a cutting edge directed toward the crevice. A guide within the body limits movement of the blade to a linear path between a position wherein the cutting edge projects into the crevice in the direction of the width thereof and a position wherein the cutting edge is withdrawn from the crevice. Guides within the body control the position of the blade along the path and a manually operable slide is provided for external actuation. A dial is eccentrically mounted on the body in the path of movement of the slide and is rotatable to adjustably limit the extent of projection of the cutting edge of the blade into the crevice. The dial prevents the blade from spanning the crevice entirely.

Abstract: A combined envelope opener and pencil sharpener unit has an envelope opener part (1) constructed to receive a letter envelope (5) for the like to be opened passed in a substantially horizontal plane therethrough and operable electrically to cut open an edge margin of the envelope (5) or the like in a directional substantially at rights angles to said plane during passage therethrough. The unit also includes a pencil sharpener part (2) constructed to receive a pencil or the like to be sharpened inserted substantially at right angles to said plane and operable electrically to sharpen the inserted end of the pencil.

Abstract: A letter opener is disclosed for cutting off the edge of an envelope which has a deformable U-shaped body. A cutting blade is located in the upper wall of the body, and a hole positioned to receive the blade is located in the lower wall. An abutment attached to the lower wall serves both as a guiding surface for an envelope, and as a stopper to prevent the two walls from binding against the envelope when pressed together. The device is used by placing a corner of an envelope against the abutment, pressing the two walls together causing the blade to puncture the envelope, and drawing the device along the edge of the envelope to thereby slice off that edge of the envelope.

Abstract: There is disclosed a slitter assembly comprised of a body member formed with a slot and having a cutter assembly including a cutting blade mounted in the body member whereby the cutting blade protrudes a predetermined distance into the slot whereby insertion of an edge portion of an envelope into the slot with subsequent movement of the slitter assembly along such edge portion of the envelope effects the cutting of one element of an edge thereof.

Abstract: A hand held opening apparatus with no moving parts which includes three distinctly different opening devices. One of the opening devices consists of a centrally located socket-like portion at the center of a substantially flat body portion. This opening device is adapted to be telescoped over twist-off bottle cap members. A second opening device is located at one end of the flat body portion and consists of a wedge member insertable beneath a ring pull tab of a can end easy opening member. The third opening device is used to open plastic bags or the like and consists of a blade laminated within upper and lower portions of the flat body portion at the end opposite the second opening device. The body portion may be made from a plastic material and a permanent magnet may be embedded in one surface of the flat body member to permit the apparatus to be held magnetically when not in use.

Abstract: A cutting blade for a hand-held cutter for cutting a cloth cover from a dampener roller without damaging any material under the cutter. The blade has an upwardly curved front bottom edge portion, a convexly curved front tip portion, and a concavely curved upwardly extending cutting edge portion.

Abstract: Apparatus for cutting a sheet of material which includes a base member having a generally planar top surface and a body member having a generally planar bottom surface. The body member has a first slot extending from the bottom surface. A spacer separates the top surface of the base member and the bottom surface of the body member. A bifurcated retainer has first and second generally parallel generally coplanar arms which are disposed respectively in first and second planes passing on first and second sides of the first slot. In some forms of the invention the apparatus includes a cover element and a pivotal mounting for the cover element on the body member. The cover element may have a notch therein for receiving a corner of an associated cutting edge. The pivotal mounting may include a spring bias for urging the cover element toward the body member. The bifurcated retainer may be manufactured of spring steel.

Abstract: A device for opening sealed bags containing foods of various types. A lever is pivoted to one end of a base plate and carries a serrated cutter wheel which is mounted for free rotation. The base plate has a recess which receives the cutting edge of the cutter wheel when the lever is pressed toward the base plate to a cutting position. The bag is inserted between the lever and base plate and is pulled through the device such that the peripheral teeth of the cutter wheel cut or perforate the bag.

Abstract: A shielded letter opener comprising a finger having a relatively pointed distal end to be inserted under the flap of a sealed envelope and carrying a cutting blade extending upwardly therefrom and facing forwardly. An elongated hood with depending sides extends above and embraces the blade and the finger to protect the user.

Abstract: A letter opener with a grip-type handle, a blade and a guide slot, wherein a lamellar blade pivots about its inner end and faces downward relative to the guide slot through which it penetrate into a slit aperture along one edge. The blade runs between the legs of a lamellar spring which is bent into a U-configuration and counters the pivot motion of the blade which has at both frontal corners a cutting face with ground edge facing downward relative to the base of the guide slot.
