Patent number: 8044560Abstract: The invention is a spark plug having multiple precise spark gaps (G} with a donut shaped electrode (20) attached to the firing end of the central electrode (32), as well as a cylindrical ground sleeve (40) that is pressed on to the primary shell (36) of the spark plug. The electrode donut (20) is generally flat and laded out in a radial direction towards the ground prongs (42) that protrude up towards the firing end from the ground sleeve (40). In conjunction with their structure, allow for the generation of a spark from every single ground prong (42) on the ground sleeve (40). This is spark potential area (G). Such multiple spark potential area along with the electrode donut (20) and ground sleeve (40) relation provides a more rapid and complete combustion of the air-fuel mixture within the internal combustion engine, which, in turn, results in more torque and more horse power.Type: GrantFiled: August 29, 2008Date of Patent: October 25, 2011Inventors: Robert Lee Steigleman, Jr., Jimmy Robert Allen, II

Patent number: 7707717Abstract: A method of repairing a used electrode device 1 is disclosed wherein the method has the steps of providing a used electrode assembly 1 having an inner conductor 9 with an integral electrode tip 3 encapsulated in an insulator body 8 having an outer conductor 10 and an outer electrode tip 4C; and pressing the inner conductor 9 with integral electrode tip 3 while holding or restraining the insulator body 8 to apply an force sufficient to overcome at least partially the adhesion forces at the mating surfaces of the inner conductor 9 and the insulator body 8. Thereafter by grasping an end 9A of the inner conductor 9 opposite the tip 3 while holding the insulator body 8 and withdrawing the inner conductor 9 from the insulator body 8 the parts can be separated.Type: GrantFiled: December 13, 2006Date of Patent: May 4, 2010Assignee: Healthtronics, Inc.Inventor: Earnest Pringle

Patent number: 6849994Abstract: An electrode assembly has an inner conductor removably connected to an insulating layer. The inner electrode is removable so that the discharge tip may be replaced without destroying the insulating layer and thus reused. In the preferred embodiment external threads on the inner conductor cooperate with internal threads in a bore of the insulating layer to fixably secure the insulating layer in a desired position relative to the inner conductor and discharge electrode tip. The discharge electrode is located colinearly with a grounded electrode tip spaced by a spark gap. The grounded electrode tip is also configured to be easily removed from the electrode assembly for replacement when degraded.Type: GrantFiled: June 30, 2003Date of Patent: February 1, 2005Assignee: HealthTronics Surgical Services, Inc.Inventors: Robert A. Patent number: 6703770Abstract: A spark plug has a central electrode, an insulator surrounding the central electrode and a metallic shell retaining therein the insulator and provided with no thread thereon. The spark plug is clearance fitted in a plug hole of a cylinder head, without being screwed into the plug hole, in such a manner that a front end portion of the metallic shell is accommodated in a front end section of the plug hole with a clearance therebetween provided with a sealant so as to transmit heat from the spark plug to the cylinder head. The clearance is preferably given by the following expression: 0.005≦D−d1≦0.05, where D is an inner diameter (mm) of the front end section and d1 is an outer diameter (mm) of the front end portion. By this, the spark plug can be easily attached to the cylinder head and attain improved heat resistance.Type: GrantFiled: April 11, 2002Date of Patent: March 9, 2004Inventors: Akira Suzuki, Takahiro Suzuki, Kazumi Kawamura, Kazuya Iwata

Patent number: 5672812Abstract: A pressure transducer suitable for use in measuring the pressures created by the combustive events that occur in internal combustion engines. The transducer utilizes the magnetostrictive effect to measure stress waves present in magnetized metallic components associated with sparkplug devices typically placed in apertures into internal combustion engine cylinders. The present invention includes a replacement sparkplug device that incorporates a pickup coil for measuring magnetostrictive events within the magnetized metal components of the sparkplug device and alternatively a sparkplug boot cover that separately incorporates a removable pickup coil for measuring the stress waves. In either embodiment, the present invention utilizes the magnetostrictive sensor signals measured as a basis for identifying internal combustion cylinder pressures and for identifying the characteristics of the ignition events within the cylinder.Type: GrantFiled: October 10, 1995Date of Patent: September 30, 1997Assignee: Southwest Research InstituteInventor: Roy C.
