  • Patent number: 6145207
Abstract: A gauge system determines the thread pitch diameter of an internally or externally-threaded article and includes a standard measuring caliper with styli selected and fitted into the caliper to correspond to a particular thread type and pitch. The styli are mounted into the caliper to provide a reference zero position to the calipers for either externally or internally-fitted articles. A processor is associated with the calipers and styli and is of a type which is configured for hand-holding. The processor has input buttons for inputting a descriptor of internal or external threads, thread type and thread pitch. The processor software receives and processes information received from the caliper to calculate the thread pitch diameter. A display connected to the processor presents the thread pitch diameter.

  • Patent number: 5571222
Abstract: A process for measuring characteristic values and fundamental quantities of tapered thread using the one-ball or two-ball measuring method is disclosed. The process is used, in particular, on coordinate measurement devices with a device table which is movable in at least two coordinate axes and with a measurable relative movement between the device table and a measuring feeler. After calibrating the measuring feeler by means of a calibrating ring, the test piece is clamped on a table which is adjusted in such a way that a first flank diameter line 11 of the tapered thread is aligned vertically to the surface of the device table. The thread of the test piece is then sensed in a plurality of Z coordinates. The measurement data recorded in so doing are fed to an evaluating device.

  • Patent number: 5165176
Abstract: An improved gage for measuring the diameters of threaded members comprises a frame having two platforms extending therefrom, and a support member mounted to the frame for receiving threaded members to be measured. A gage member having a plunger is mounted to a first platform, a measuring shaft is mounted to a second platform, and a lever arm is pivotally mounted on a fulcrum member mounted to the frame. A first end of the lever arm is in contact with, but not physically attached to, an end of the measuring shaft. A second end of the lever arm is in contact with, but not physically attached to, an end of the plunger of the gage member. A mechanical relationship is defined between the plunger of the gage member, the measuring shaft, and the pivotally mounted lever arm that permits the gage member to directly measure the diameter of the threaded object.

  • Patent number: 4974327
Abstract: A thread gaging device has three thread gage rollers mounted 120 degrees apart from each other. Two horizontal arms extend outward from the base. One of the rollers mounts to one arm and the other two rollers mount to the other arm. The two rollers on the one arm can slide horizontally relative to each other to select the positions. Also, the two rollers can be repositioned vertically relative to the other roller to a selected position. The front of the rollers is pivotal relative to the base. An indicator will measure the amount of pivotal movement to gage a threaded fastener inserted between the rollers.

  • Patent number: 4761891
Abstract: In an NC-lathe comprising a thread touch sensor provided with a touch portion to be brought into contact with an effective radius/diameter portion of a screw thread, an automatic measuring device electrically connected to the thread touch sensor, and an automatic correction device connected to the automatic measuring device; an effective radius or diameter of a screw thread is measured by bringing the touch portion of the thread touch sensor into contact with an effective radius/diameter portion of the screw thread, the measured dimension is compared with a desired dimension, and when a difference is produced between the respective dimensions, the NC-lathe is controlled by correcting an amount of machining by means of the automatic correction device.

  • Patent number: 4644394
Abstract: An apparatus and method are shown for inspecting the externally threaded surface of an object such as a pipe. A video camera is mounted in a translational frame for movement in x,y,z planes. The translational frame is mounted in a rotational assembly which rotates the frame about the circumference of the pipe threads to be inspected. The video signals from the camera are digitized and sent to a computer processor where the signals are interpreted to position the camera as it moves linearly along the axis of the pipe threads and to detect defects and discontinuities in the threaded surface of the pipe being inspected.

  • Patent number: 4521971
Abstract: A measuring head for screw thread measuring machines which is capable of measuring threads of a piece to be measured which has an outer diameter with a measuring point and which may be of varied diameters within predetermined limits comprises a base plate which has a thruhole in its center, a plurality of straight support grooves. Feelers are arranged at spaced angular locations around the periphery of the hole and a centering disc is located within the hole as well as measuring elements which are similarly offset and clamping elements which are arranged at selected angular locations to engage the centering disc. The feelers and the measuring elements are carried in a measuring station which is movable along a groove which extends parallel to a straight line which intersects a measuring point on the diameter of the piece to be measured and the lowermost point of the piece at the location in which it intersects the vertical axis.

  • Patent number: 4324049
Abstract: A gaging system and method involves sensing longitudinal, lateral and rotatable displacements of a gaging tip or probe, for processing, as via a computer, and readout. One or more base positions of the tip may be selectively established; and corrections for misalignment of the gage relative to the work may be made as via the computer. Means is provided to obtain diameter or radius measurements associated with an annular body surface, at various locations on that surface, and said measurements may be averaged, as via the computer. Also, the measurement signals may be transmitted only after predetermined pressure application to a gaging tip.

  • Patent number: 4135306
Abstract: The depth of thread in a roll-on closure is tested by determining the radial distance between the peak and valley defining a profile of the external surface of the threaded section. Apparatus for measuring the peak includes a first sensor broad enough to span the valley. Apparatus for measuring the valley includes a sensor able to fit into the valley. The container with the closure thereon is rotated to permit the latter sensor to enter to the full depth of the thread valley in case the point at which that sensor first encounters the surface of the closure is in a shallow end of the valley or not in the valley at all. If the second sensor moves far enough relative to the first sensor and in a radial direction with respect to the closure, the apparatus will respond to such relative movement as indicating that the closure has a predetermined thread depth.
