Patent number: 5517430Abstract: A real time directional orientation apparatus is disclosed for use in a four pi (4.pi.) geometry. The apparatus is to be affixed to an object which translates in space. A source emitter means, which may be radioactive, is suspended in a fluid in concert with a magnet. A bank of emission detectors registers the orientation of the source emitter or emitters against a known starting value. As the object translates in space, so does its position and orientation, thus causing the magnet to adjust its position in reference to an external magnetic field, such as, but not limited to, the earth's magnetic field. The motion of the magnet causes the emitter or emitters orientation to change which is sensed by the emission detectors as both a change in intensity and position. This data is processed by a computer and with ancillary data provided by other sensors provides real time position, path and other navigational, directional and positional data, such as pitch, yaw, attitude and roll.Type: GrantFiled: June 20, 1994Date of Patent: May 14, 1996Assignee: Directional Robotics Research, Inc.Inventor: W. Patent number: 5477470Abstract: A real time directional orientation apparatus is disclosed for use in a two pi (2.pi.) geometry. The apparatus is to be affixed to an object which translates in space. A cylindrical disk is suspended in a fluid in concert with a magnet. The cylindrical disk is disposed inside a cylindrical housing. A light source is in communication with the disk and the light is propagated through the disk where it is finally projected from the disk in a radial fashion. Patent number: 5131154Abstract: Method and apparatus are disclosed for compensating a magnetic compass in a vehicle for magnetic deviation. With the compass installed, the angle indicated by the magnetic compass relative to a direction axis of the vehicle is measured. A test magnetic field is added at a known angle relative to the direction axis of the vehicle. The strength of the test magnetic field required to displace the direction indicated by the compass through a predetermined angle is memorized. Then, the strength of the resultant magnetic field is calculated using the measured angle, the predetermined angle and the memorized strength of the magnetic field. After determining the strength of the resultant magnetic field with the vehicle oriented in any selected direction, the vehicle is then reoriented in a direction one hundred eighty degrees away from the selected direction and the strength of the resultant magnetic field in that orientation is determined in the same way.Type: GrantFiled: October 15, 1990Date of Patent: July 21, 1992Assignee: Donnelly CorporationInventors: Kenneth L. Patent number: 5042157Abstract: A sensor provides remote angular orientation sensing. A rotational signal transmitted to a rotatable input shaft mounted in an encoder body causes the shaft to rotate. Light signals are transmitted through a digital code wheel mounted to the shaft. As the code wheel and shaft rotate, the light signals passing through the code wheel are superimposed with light pulses corresponding to incremental and directional changes of angular position of the code wheel with respect to the encoder body. The light signals are propagated through an optical fiber to a remote combination digital and analog circuit which converts them into a digital representation of the angular position of the code wheel.Type: GrantFiled: August 8, 1988Date of Patent: August 27, 1991Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the NavyInventors: Steven L. Patent number: 4958072Abstract: A method for remotely detecting the angular position of a rotatable code wheel is provided by generating two sine wave modulated light beams which are orthogonally polarized with respect to each other. The beams are combined and then directed through a polarization filter mounted on the code wheel. The combined beam incurs a phase shift with respect to a reference signal which depends upon the position of the code wheel. The combined polarized beam provides angular position resolution between zero and ninety degrees, but lacks quadrant resolution. Two other light beams are directed to a two channel digital mask pattern imprinted on the code wheel. The mask pattern encodes these latter beams with "on" or "off" pulses to provide quadrant resolution. The beams are converted to digital electric signals which are received by a programmable read oly memory (PROM). The PROM provides an output corresponding to the angular position of the code wheel to a display.Type: GrantFiled: September 7, 1988Date of Patent: September 18, 1990Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the NavyInventors: Thomas Hofler, Michael R. Patent number: 4862594Abstract: A compass and method of operation are disclosed for finding the heading of a vehicle. The heading is found using a compass having a rotor with a compass magnet thereon and means on the rotor defining a reference line in known relation with the polar axis of the magnet. The angular displacement of the rotor is measured between alignment with the direction reference axis and alignment with the local magnetic field. A search coil is used to torque the rotor so that it reaches a reference position in which the reference line thereon is aligned with the direction reference axis. A reference position encoder generates a pulse when alignment is achieved. An angular displacement encoder produces a digital signal which changes with each predetermined increment of rotation of the rotor and which is indicative of the direction of rotation. A microcomputer processes the signals to provide a cumulative count of the increments of rotation.Type: GrantFiled: November 4, 1987Date of Patent: September 5, 1989Assignee: Donnelly CorporationInventors: Kenneth L. Patent number: 4577414Abstract: A remotely readable fiber optic compass. A sheet polarizer is affixed to a magnet rotatably mounted in a compass body, such that the polarizer rotates with the magnet. The optical axis of the sheet polarizer is preferably aligned with the north-south axis of the magnet. A single excitation light beam is divided into four identical beams, two of which are passed through the sheet polarizer and through two fixed polarizing sheets which have their optical axes at right angles to one another. The angle of the compass magnet with respect to a fixed axis of the compass body can be determined by measuring the ratio of the intensities of the two light beams. The remaining ambiguity as to which of the four possible quadrants the magnet is pointing to is resolved by the second pair of light beams, which are passed through the sheet polarizer at positions which are transected by two semicircular opaque strips formed on the sheet polarizer.Type: GrantFiled: April 30, 1985Date of Patent: March 25, 1986Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the United States Department of EnergyInventors: Albert Migliori, Gregory W. Patent number: 4425716Abstract: A remote-reading compass in which a compass assembly is buoyantly supported within a housing to accommodate a large range of tilt. Buoyancy is provided by a float surrounding the compass assembly and a liquid within the housing chamber. A pivot pin extends from either side of the float along a first normally horizontal axis to permit rotation of the float and compass assembly about the axis. Patent number: 3950859Abstract: Angular displacements are measured relative to either an external magnetic field as in a compass or relative to a vertical reference as in inclinometers or the like by selective orientation of the device. A bistable weight balancing apparatus and a dual bearing support arrangement cooperate to provide two discrete balancing positions. Horizontal positioning of the device results in relatively even weight distribution around a needle bearing support which permits alignment with the polar line of an external magnetic field. Vertical orientation of the device permits an offset redistribution of the weight in the bistable balance to define a vertical reference. Digitally coded apparatus such as a disc permits circuitry to detect instantaneous orientation of the frame relative to a magnetic field or vertical reference. Circuitry logically cooperates with data read from specially coded tracks to insure accurate strobing of the output data free of ambiguities.Type: GrantFiled: January 9, 1975Date of Patent: April 20, 1976Assignee: The Brunton CompanyInventor: Melvin G.
