A fixed abutment member defines an abutment surface against which the connector component can be moved into engagement. A movable measuring member is mounted for movement relative to the fixed abutment member and is engageable by a distal end of the optical fiber as the connector component is moved into engagement with the abutment surface of the fixed abutment member. Therefore, the amount of relative movement between the movable measuring member and the fixed abutment member directly corresponds to the distance the optical fiber protrudes from the connector component.
