  • Patent number: 10428991
Abstract: An apparatus to make a custom length pipe nipple, and method for use of the apparatus. The apparatus has a male plumbing thread at one end connected to an elongate member, with length or measurement markings along the elongate member. The apparatus is threaded into a plumbing fixture that will be flush mounted against a wall, and then using the markings on the elongate member, a length is determined that corresponds to the flush mounting surface of the plumbing fixture. The apparatus is then threaded into a plumbing fitting, such as a drop ear elbow inside a wall, and a second length is determined that corresponds to a flush mounting surface of the wall. The two lengths are added together to determine the length of a piece of pipe. Tightening and/or caulk allowance may be included, and a piece of copper or iron pipe is then cut to length. For copper pipe, a threaded male copper fitting is solder attached to each end. For iron pipe, the ends are threaded.

  • Publication number: 20080263883
Abstract: An avalanche probe for locating and rescuing people buried by an avalanche is collapsible, having several probe segments which allow the probe to be folded to a compact unit that can be quickly and easily assembled for use. A connecting cord passes through the probe segments and fastens to a probe tip. Applying tension to the cord draws the segments into alignment. A clamping mechanism maintains the tension on the cord in such a manner that the probe segments are fixedly and securely held against one another. The clamping mechanism provides two interpenetrating elements, an outer element and an inner element having a passage therethrough. At least one clamping element passes into the central passage and is forcibly engaged with the cord as the interpenetration of the elements increases.

  • Patent number: 7325328
Abstract: The present invention discloses the methods and apparatus to acquire, record, and analyze data to determine the draft of a water-borne vessel and/or the amount of cargo that has been loaded in a water-borne vessel. The apparatus includes a portable, handheld housing containing means for use in positioning the housing in a predetermined location and spatial orientation. Such means can include one or more narrow beam emitting devices, such as lasers or other similar devices, or a camera or other image processing level sensors. The housing also containing an ultrasonic transducer and receiver, or alternatively, a laser emitter and receiver, that directs sound pulses or light, respectively, toward the surface of the water body in which the vessel is placed. Within the housing is electrical circuitry to receive either the sound or light beam signals, and from these signals produce a signal representative of the time of travel of the sound pulse or light.

  • Patent number: 6085652
Abstract: An ink fountain with an ink-duct roller in the inking mechanism of printing presses, with a device for filling printing ink into the ink fountain, is described. The device for filling ink is mounted on a sled so that it can be moved back and forth in the longitudinal direction of the ink fountain. A sensor is fastened to the sled, and when the ink level is too low, the sensor controls the ink feed. Thereby, a precise regulation of the amount of ink added can be achieved by means of a downstream dosing device.

  • Patent number: 4855966
Abstract: In one embodiment of a technique for monitoring scouring around structural members which are at least partially submerged in the soil bed material at the bottom of a body of water, the distance between a fixed point on the structural member and the topmost portion of the soil bed material near the member is determined and compared to a predetermined value. When scouring occurs, removal of some of the soil bed material results in an increase in the measured distance, which increase can be used to indicate the occurrence of scouring in an appropriate manner, such as by utilizing a display, by recording the data, or even by telecommunicating the data to another location. The distance determination may be made either only when called for or periodically at predetermined times, in order to provide continuous monitoring. In an alternative embodiment, scour monitoring is provided by one or more probes disposed so as to initially rest on top of the soil bed material located near the structural member.
