  • Patent number: 10836603
Abstract: A tool, such as a tape measure, including a spring-based retraction system is shown. The retraction system utilizes an epicyclic gear train coupled between the tape blade winding reel and a rotating arbor or axle within the tape measure. A spiral spring has an outer end coupled to the reel and an inner end coupled to the axle. The gear train may be a reduction gear train such that the axle rotates slower than the reel. By coupling the spiral spring between the gear train input and gear train output, high energy density springs may be used, which may allow for decrease in housing size, increase in tape length or thickness for a given housing size, and/or advantageous retraction speed control.

  • Patent number: 9134123
Abstract: The tension element position sensor includes three housing elements, wherein the two outer housing elements are configured pot shaped with a base towards a center housing component, wherein one element is the spring motor and the other is the rotation angle sensor. Thus the rotation angle sensor includes two Hall sensors, wherein an encoder magnet rotates as a function of the rotation of the winding drum opposite to the faces of the Hall sensors on the face side of one respective gear of two gears meshing with one another. Herein the arrangement of the gears and circuit boards in the receiver of this lateral housing component is of particular importance. Also the spring motor can be completely preassembled and stored in a closed manner.

  • Patent number: 8739426
Abstract: A measuring device for providing a portable and easy-to-use electronic measuring device. The measuring device generally includes a housing which includes a locking member, a reel member, a sensing assembly and control unit. A length of string is wound around the reel member, which is secured within the housing in a manner which allows the string to be retracted around the reel member absent outside force. As the string is dispensed through a string opening on the housing, a sensor wheel having a plurality of counting indicia will be rotated underneath one or more sensing members, which act to calculate the distance of string which has been dispensed. This data is communicated to a control unit, which causes the relevant information to be shown on a display on the housing. The locking member may be utilized to stop the string from being dispensed after the requisite length has been dispensed.

The measuring probe is coupled, by a cord or a wire, to a first sensor for measuring a length or change in length of the cord or wire, and to a second sensor for measuring an angle or angular displacement of the cord or the wire. The obtained position data can be graphically represented and/or used for driving an automatic machining apparatus for producing a product corresponding to the measured data.

  • Patent number: 6499225
Abstract: A measuring cable travel sensor comprises a measuring cable, and a cable drum for winding on and off the measuring cable. A spiral spring is arranged non-rotatably with the cable drum coaxially therewith, on the rotary trunnion of a rotary angle sensor for sensing rotation of the cable drum. The cable drum and the spiral spring are disposed in a housing which forms at least one mechanical internal space for same. The housing has at least two flat outside surfaces which are a right angle to each other. The housing parts are in the form of plastic injection moldings, and the sensor can be assembled very easily and quickly. The external configuration of the housing makes it possible to afford very many different possible ways of fixing it in position relative to the surrounding structure. The sensor is assembled by a method affording simplicity and speed.

Abstract: An apparatus for measuring the length of a conduit includes a fish tape having a housing and a spool disposed in the housing and a tape with markings along its longitudinal length. The spool is adapted for grasping and pulling the tape. The tape is forced through a conduit until the end of the conduit is reached at which time the length of the conduit is determined by noting the marking that appears on the tape where the tape first enters into the conduit. A method for determining the proper length of wire that is required and of simultaneously preparing the conduit for pulling the wire includes obtaining a segment of wire of a length that exceeds that of the marking that was noted and then attaching the wire to the end of the tape that was forced through the conduit. The spool is then grasped and pulled so as to urge the tape and the wire to pass through the conduit.

Abstract: A spacing device having a length of uniformly stretchable elastic cord pre-marked with equally spaced marks in a manner such that when the cord is stretched across a given span to be divided into equal spaces, the distance between any two marks will be equal to the distance between each of the marks on the cord within the span, thereby providing a quick reference of one or more equally spaced points within a given span. In one embodiment the elastic cord is wound about a reel, and in another embodiment, the cord may be dispensed from the reel. To divide a span equally by a given number of spaces, the elastic cord is adjusted elastically to provide the location of one or more of the points. To locate equally spaced points along a line, the elastic cord is adjusted elastically to provide the desired spacing and the location of those points.

Abstract: A retractable tape measure having a flexible tape biased in a coiled position, and a housing sized to contain the flexible tape. The housing includes an opening through which a first end of the flexible tape extends, and a slot for positioning a locking mechanism. A tape biasing member operatively connects to the flexible tape to bias it in a retracted position. The locking mechanism controls the extension and retraction of the flexible tape from the housing. The mechanism includes a locking lever having a grip arm extending through the slot and a lock arm for contacting the flexible tape. A pin extends through the locking lever making the locking lever pivotable between an open position in which the flexible tape can move freely through the opening, a maintain position in which the flexible tape only exits freely through the opening, and a locked position to prevent the tape from moving relative to the opening. A lock biasing member biases the locking lever towards the locked position.

The restraining assembly comprises a plurality of spaced apart magnets positioned on a stationary frame, where the magnets provide a reverse torque and restrict excessive rotational speed on a spool when a copper disc or equivalent magnetic flux medium is rotated at a close proximity to the face of the magnets. When a cable is suddenly released and allowed to freely return on the rotating spool, the restraining assembly restrains the high rotational speed at which the cable can accelerate when returning or retracting to the spool, such that the restraining assembly prevents the cable from self-destruction and/or damage to the linear transducer.
