Patent number: 6792831Abstract: The tools (wrenches) of this invention provide a one color instant identification of color coded tools. Preferably, the tools have a portion of their outer surface colored. Typically, the color impregnates the metal or plating during the manufacturing process. Another embodiment is a colored applique, band or sleeve on the outer surface of the tools. The key of this coloring is to identify the tool quickly by coloring a large area of the tool. This provides for quick identification of the tool even if the numerical designations are illegible because of small sizing or dirt obliteration. In a preferred embodiment, virtually the entire tool is colored during manufacturing. In another preferred embodiment, large raised numbers combine with the overall color scheme to make the tools quickly identifiable. Dirting the large colored surface is very unlikely as is obliterating the large raised fractional numbers.Type: GrantFiled: February 21, 2002Date of Patent: September 21, 2004Inventor: Larry G. Publication number: 20020011008Abstract: A device attachable either removably or permanently, or installed as original equipment, on the outer free end of an otherwise conventional measuring tape for enhancing the ability of the outer end of the tape to grip and stay in place on the far side of a workpiece being measured. The device features a generally planar body expanse having perimeter structure disposed outwardly of the long axis of an associated measuring tape, with this perimeter structure being formed with a line-like array (curved or straight, and with or without corners) of tooth-like projection elements which are intended to face and engage and grip a surface in a workpiece being measured.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 16, 2001Publication date: January 31, 2002Inventors: Mark Nelson, Thomas G. Patent number: 6338204Abstract: A tape measure comprising a housing having a rubber base and flexible tape coiled up inside, and a top section having a level. The flexible tape is marked with linear measurement scales on the top and bottom. A horizontal slit runs lengthwise along the flexible measuring tape. An inverted pull tab having a “C” shape attaches to the end of the flexible tape. Two vertical slits extend outward from the horizontal slit near the end of the flexible tape. The top section connects to the housing at a center joint, allowing the top section to lock into set angular positions. Alternative embodiments have a fixed top section with multiple levels and/or a rubber base comprising a rubber roller mechanism.Type: GrantFiled: September 20, 1999Date of Patent: January 15, 2002Inventor: Jennifer Howle

Patent number: 6336277Abstract: The invention concerns a measuring stop device for a distance-measuring apparatus (4), said device comprising a rear measuring stop (1) which runs perpendicular to the measuring direction (6), is linear and is divided into at least two measuring stop regions (1a, 1b), at least one measuring stop region (1b) being rotatable about an axis (3) running parallel to the measuring direction (6). If the measuring stop regions (1a, 1b) are aligned one behind the other, a distance can be measured from a transversal intersecting a vertex and is used, for example, for determining the diagonals of a surface. In order to measure distances from a flat surface, a stable support surface which is perpendicular to the measuring direction (6) can be provided by rotating the rotatable measuring stop region (1b) accordingly.Type: GrantFiled: July 15, 1999Date of Patent: January 8, 2002Assignee: Leica Geosystems AGInventor: Franz Sprenger

Publication number: 20010042315Abstract: A tape measure includes a removable pencil sharpening assembly. The pencil sharpening assemblies can be sized to sharpen a variety of pencil sizes. The tape measure also includes a writing stripe for allowing user generated indicia. The writing stripe also allows for the selective erasure, wiping or removal of the user generated indicia.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 7, 2001Publication date: November 22, 2001Inventor: Thomas J. Patent number: 6295739Abstract: A system for holding the end tab of a retractable tape while the user swings measured arcs on the floor including a holder body having a pivot point fixed with respect to the floor and a spaced slot for receiving the tape end tab. The configuration of the holder body and slot is such that, after the holder body is fixed to the floor, the user can extend the end of the tape, and hook it to the body while standing erect and without manipulating the holder body.Type: GrantFiled: December 15, 1998Date of Patent: October 2, 2001Inventor: Wendell P. Publication number: 20010022035Abstract: A measuring device comprising a planar elongate member having a first or upper face and a second or lower face; the first face bearing a plurality of indicia markings thereon denoting longitudinal distances between the markings; and the second face having a layer of a self-adhesive composition. The adhesive coated measuring tape is user-friendly in providing a simple, fast and accurate method of maintaining a precise position on an object.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 5, 2001Publication date: September 20, 2001Inventor: Frank Veloce

Publication number: 20010003872Abstract: An adhesive backed measuring tape is disclosed that can provide customized, printed measurement scales on a single flexible backing that has a positionable or repositionable adhesive for contact with flat surfaces, single curved surfaces, or compound curved surfaces. In a preferred embodiment, the measuring tape has multiple scales printed thereon. The combination of linear sections and transverse axes defined by intervals can permit a variety of repeating scales on a single tape, minimizing waste of tape unrolled from a dispenser.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 16, 2001Publication date: June 21, 2001Applicant: 3M Innovative Properties CompanyInventor: Jeffrey C.
