Patent number: 5299359Abstract: A caliper logging sonde is provided having a plurality of sensing fingers each of which is pivotally mounted to the sonde and movable with respect to the sonde in response to variations in the internal dimensions of a wellbore tube through which the sonde passes. An electrical signal which is proportional to variations in the internal dimensions of a wellbore tube is determined at regular time intervals at a series of points around the circumference of the wellbore tube. A maximum and minimum dimension for each point around the circumference of the wellbore tube during a selected time interval is temporarily stored and thereafter transmitted to the surface at regular intervals. A high density array of sensors is provided by utilizing a transducer plate having a large number of cylindrical apertures disposed around the circumference thereof.Type: GrantFiled: June 18, 1993Date of Patent: April 5, 1994Assignee: Computalog Research, Inc.Inventors: James D. Estes, Bruce E. Dennis

Patent number: 5136789Abstract: A linear variable inductance transducer of the kind in which a spring-loaded plunger containing a magnetic core is axially movable in a stationary housing containing a coil assembly has the external surface of the plunger made of ceramic material, guided linearly solely by sliding in a ceramic bearing sleeve in the housing. The bearing sleeve may itself be flanged to form a bobbin for the coil assembly.Type: GrantFiled: December 10, 1990Date of Patent: August 11, 1992Assignee: System E Controls LimitedInventor: Barrie C. Patent number: 4503619Abstract: The injector height measuring tool assembly includes a tool having a magnetic member to which is attached a dial gauge having a plunger. The member is placed on the follower injector body and magnetically adheres thereto. The distal end of the plunger engages a body of the injector. There is also included in the assembly a storage/calibration member which retains the magnetism in the member of the tool and also calibrates it.Type: GrantFiled: June 22, 1983Date of Patent: March 12, 1985Assignee: Snap-on Tools CorporationInventors: Richard C. Patent number: 4407157Abstract: A well logging instrument has a plurality of contact arms which are forced against the sidewall of the borehole. The contact arms are pivotally attached to a first collar fixed to a central shaft and are pivotally attached to a second collar slidably mounted on the central shaft. Radial movement of the center of the contact arms moves a slidable collar member over an electrical coil assembly emitting an alternating magnetic flux field. The movement of the slidable collar over the electrical coil assembly alters the eddy current loading of a coil. The position of the contact arms and thus the position of the slidable collar attached thereto can be measured by detecting the eddy current loading of the coil.Type: GrantFiled: August 5, 1981Date of Patent: October 4, 1983Assignee: Dresser Industries, Inc.Inventor: Heinz D. Patent number: 4338723Abstract: An angle measuring device for establishing a position of a frame member in two orthogonal planes or in an azimuth plane, relative to a reference plane, comprising a frame member supporting a plurality of equally radially and angularly spaced linear potentiometers having rods which engage a base plate and are pivotally connected thereto to permit the frame to be swiveled in any location about the base plate. The potentiometers are calibrated to provide an indication of the position of the frame relative to the base plate as a result of movement of the rods within the potentiometers.Type: GrantFiled: January 4, 1980Date of Patent: July 13, 1982Assignee: Centro CororationInventor: Harry L. Patent number: 4294305Abstract: A pair of measuring elements are installed on guide means traveling between facing rolls of a continuous casting machine, the outer end faces of said measuring elements are each formed into a circular are whose diameter is the preset value for a gap between the facing rolls. Upon entering between the facing rolls, the measuring elements are brought into contact with the rolls due to a biasing force rendered thereto, whereby the displacements of the measuring elements are measured by a transducer, thereby enabling to measure the gap between the facing rolls. In particular, since the outer end faces of the measuring elements are each formed into a circular are, the necessary gap between the facing rolls can be accurately detected.Type: GrantFiled: March 14, 1980Date of Patent: October 13, 1981Assignee: Kawasaki Steel CorporationInventor: Kenichi Oda

Patent number: 4138821Abstract: Apparatus for determining pellet length and end squareness which includes a base supporting a pair of linear variable differential transformers (LVDT) between which a pellet is placed for measuring end squareness. The LVDT's are perpendicularity detectors and each includes appropriate windings contained in a housing and an armature axially slidable therein. The armature is mounted on a shaft having extensions on opposite ends thereof. A swivel plate is attached to one end, while the other end is supported in a framework for the inspection apparatus, the arrangement being such that the housing containing the windings moves axially relative to the stationary armature. When a pellet is placed in position, each detector is advanced toward the pellet until its swivel plate contacts the pellet ends. If the pellet ends are not square, the swivel plates cock at an angle, thereby displacing the windings with respect to the armature.Type: GrantFiled: December 23, 1975Date of Patent: February 13, 1979Assignee: Westinghouse Electric Corp.Inventor: Robert S. Patent number: 3987551Abstract: A method of measuring dimensions of parts having a continuous or discontinuous surface during the course of the machining. This process has the feature that the displacements of a measurement sensor are mechanized, that the mechanized displacement of the said measurement sensor is controlled in such a manner that it gradually approaches the surface to be measured and comes into contact with it, that the dimension measured at the moment of contact is recorded, and that the sensor is maintained at the measured dimension or the sensor is moved in the opposite direction for a predetermined period of time before starting a new cycle of approach of the sensor to effect a new contact with the surface to be measured and recording the measured dimension at the time of said new contact. The invention also relates to a device for the performing of this method.Type: GrantFiled: May 19, 1975Date of Patent: October 26, 1976Assignee: Tesa S.A.Inventor: Max Kienle
