Abstract: A fuse assembly structured for use with a power circuit includes: a fuse holder defining a space and including first and second terminals structured to electrically connect to the power circuit; a fuse disposed in the space defined by the fuse holder; and a relay disposed in the space defined by the fuse holder. The relay includes separable contacts, an operating mechanism structured to open and close said separable contacts, and a control circuit cooperating with said operating mechanism to cause said operating mechanism to open or close said separable contacts. Current flowing between the first and second terminals flows through the separable contacts and the fuse and opening the separable contacts interrupts said current flowing between said first and second terminals.

  • Patent number: 4897758
Abstract: A wound bobbin coil (A) and a fuse (B) are interconnected electrically in series. The coil and the fuse are mounted closely adjacent and molded into a tough, nylon encapsulation (C). The series connected coil and fuse are connected with electrical terminals (26, 30) to form a unitary electrical component which is readily connected with associated circuitry. In this manner, when the coil becomes damaged sufficiently to blow the fuse, both the coil and the fuse must be replaced. A repairman cannot short the fuse or merely replace the fuse and allow a damaged coil to continue functioning. In the preferred utilization of the present coil in a freezer compartment ice maker, coil failures can cause flooding, overheating, and other catastrophic damage to a refrigerator/freezer.

  • Patent number: 4631508
Abstract: An electro-mechanical circuit breaker device incorporating a fuse cartridge, wherein two contact bars are normally connected by a series of mobile contacts held against their lower edge by springs, two in number for each. An insulating plate, suitably guided at its edges in the insulating envelope of the apparatus, receives the downward displacement that a coil applies by the Thomson effect to an aluminum disc, and it lowers the contacts against spring and latches them in open position by engagement of a bolt in a notch. The lower edge of the plate is provided with teeth to receive the successive contacts and retain them transversely, while each of the mobile contacts is notched to ensure lengthwise retention.

  • Patent number: 4583066
Abstract: A flux shifting circuit breaker trip device is disclosed which includes a permanent magnet for retaining a solenoid armature in opposition to a spring force. Energization of the solenoid winding produces a magnetic flux in opposition to the permanent magnet flux to extend the armature under the spring force. In order to provide ambient temperature response, the solenoid armature is formed from a stem part and a barrel part held together by a meltable material. Increase in ambient temperature above a predetermined value causes the material to melt allowing the stem part to extend under the spring force to trip the breaker.

  • Patent number: 4112405
Abstract: A plastic coil bobbin has a recess with the precise dimensions of a thermal fuse. On one side, the recess is open so that, as the coil is wound on the bobbin, successive layers of coil wire form a wall-like surface closing that open side. As the fuse is press fit into the recess, it is also forced into intimate contact against the wall of wire. Thus, the only material between the fuse and wire is a thin plastic shell forming the fuse housing. Since the fuse rating takes this wall thickness into account, there is effectively no thermal insulation between the coils and the fuse. Accordingly, under overheating conditions, the fuse opens a circuit when there is overheating and before a fire can start.
