  • Patent number: 8410876
Abstract: The disclosed concept provides for an operating mechanism in a overload relay assembly having a solenoid with a permanent magnet. The solenoid includes a ferrous output member. The solenoid moves the output member between a first retracted position and a second extended position. When the output member is in the first retracted position, the permanent magnet maintains the output member in the first retracted position. Thus, in a system wherein the overload relay assembly interrupts power to its own operating mechanism solenoid, the permanent magnet maintains the output member in the first retracted position even when the solenoid is de-energized.

The reduced number of components includes the lack of a return spring on the manual actuators. Further, the relay switch member, which was typically a snap switch conducting member structured to change its configuration, is a substantially flat blade. Further, a circuit is used to detect an over-current condition and a solenoid actuates the relay switch assembly, thereby eliminating the need for a mechanical over-current detection and switch actuation device.

Abstract: With variable airgap reluctance actuators problems arise due to the relationship between actuator mass and displacement range. By providing opposed surfaces in the actuator stator core and armature which have undulations typically in the form of grooves, slots and projections, a greater displacement range can be achieved whilst maintaining performance above a rated displacement force characteristic. In such circumstances by establishing a necessary rated displacement force characteristic, an actuator can be tailored and designed to meet that characteristic over a desired displacement range which has significantly less mass in comparison with a prior actuator arrangement having flat surfaces.

  • Patent number: 4734668
Abstract: A relay includes a coil body having a pair of flanges, a U-shaped core yoke, a flat armature, and at least one cooperating contact element anchored in the coil body. An angled leaf spring is secured to the armature, the leaf spring having an extension forming a contact spring and being simultaneously secured to said yoke by a U-shaped adjustment piece which serves as a bearing spring for the armature. All terminal elements are formed as tabs and are conducted downwardly out of the relay in a common plane perpendicular to the plane of integration of the relay so that an extremely narrow structure is provided.

  • Patent number: 4684909
Abstract: An electromagnetic relay has a coil body with a core yoke formed from flat stock with a core leg extending through the coil body. A yoke leg, also formed from the same piece of flat stock, is disposed over or next to the coil in a plane which is at a right angle relative to the plane of the core leg. An armature is disposed at the free end of the yoke leg, forming a working air gap with the free end of the yoke leg and being mounted for movement on a leaf spring pivotable about a bearing location. The free end of the armature forms the contact spring which cooperates with a stationary contact element. A connection element functioning as a terminal is also integrally formed from the same piece of flat stock. Additional coil connection elements are secured in the coil body by being plugged therein. The relay assembly is mounted on a base which forms a portion of the housing in combination with a cap placed over the base covering the assembly.

  • Patent number: 4618842
Abstract: The present disclosure refers to a miniature relay with a spring bracket serving for mounting a magnet coil and spring contact bank. The base of the spring bracket is provided with plug or solder connections towards the outside, with a view to providing the most compact construction possible with a simultaneous, far-reaching separation of plug or solder connections for the coil winding and a contact bank. It is also within the context of the present invention that the longitudinal axis of the magnet coil is arranged perpendicularly to the longitudinal axis of the spring contact bank.

  • Patent number: 4604598
Abstract: Reduced base plate dimensions are provided for an electromagnetic relay of the kind having a flap type armature by disposing the core which carries a spool and the winding therein perpendicular to the base plate with its free end spaced from the base plate sufficiently for the armature to swing between the free end of the core and the base plate, while being hinged in a seat at one end of the armature provided in the magnet yoke. Support for the magnetic system of the relay, which like the base plate assembly is a preassembled unit is provided by anchoring portions (29) of the magnet yoke which lie against the armature seat and are so set in the base plate when the two subassemblies are put together, that the free end of the core is in the position described. A leaf spring carrying the switch contact as an aperture stamped out in it for centering the armature. The switching path connections are very short and various details are provided to simplify assembly and adjustment of the relay in mass production.

  • Patent number: 4542360
Abstract: An electromagnetic relay having a dual acting armature has a U-shaped armature with two divergent legs. The armature is pivoted on one of the legs with the pivoted leg being arranged adjacent to an electromagnetic field producing structure including an electrically energizable coil. A first movable electrical contact carrying means is arranged to cooperate with a first one of the legs of the armature to produce a motion of a first electrical contact between a first and a second position in response to an energized and a non-energized state of the coil, respectively. Concurrently, a second movable electrical contact carrying means is arranged to cooperate with the other or second leg of the armature to produce a motion of a second electrical contact between a first and a second position in response to an energized and deenergized state of the coil, respectively. The coil is located in the bight of the U-shaped armature with the pivoted first leg being urged by a spring away from the coil.

  • Patent number: 4476450
Abstract: A compact, flexible relay with plunger-type armature is provided. Relay configurations ranging from single-pole, single throw to double-pole, double-throw may be provided on the same base, using standardized components. A plurality of the relay terminals are placed in a stacked arrangement, including intermediate insulators, for minimizing the use of space transverse to the plunger armature. The terminals are integrally formed to include a plate portion for positioning parallel to the base and a depending blade portion extending transversely thereto for external electrical connections. Some of the terminals are included in the electromagnetic circuit. In a particular configuration, a double-pole, double-throw relay suited for dynamic braking of a motor is conveniently provided employing the stacked arrangement of terminals and several standardized components.

  • Patent number: 4475095
Abstract: A relay with plunger-type armature includes a resilient contact support, such as a conductive leaf spring, supported by a terminal in a manner affording substantial attenuation of contact bounce when engaged by an armature-mounted contact. Provision is made for insuring separation of the contacts upon reverse displacement of the armature. Specifically, a leaf spring may be fixed at one end to the base of a channel formed in the surface of a terminal plate. An overlying apertured insulator preflexes the spring and limits its displacement in the reverse direction. In a double-throw relay, the other "stationary" contact may be mounted on a resilient support, such as another leaf spring, for providing contact bounce suppression there as well.

  • Patent number: 4456896
Abstract: An improved low cost relay which comprises a one-piece spool/base, a one-piece core/terminal and a one-piece yoke/armature (yokarm). A coil wound on the spool has one of its leads led to a wire which passes through the hollow stem of the spool for contact with the core upon its insertion into the stem. The stem also retains the yokarm in position with respect to the core and spool. A contact area on the yokarm moves against a contact area on a press-fit terminal mounted in the base with excellent wiping action. The other coil lead is led to a second wire mounted in the spool, and which is captured by a lanced split in a further terminal, which is also a press-fit in the base. A suppressor diode is received in the base and has one of its leads captured by the further terminal when inserted into the base, and its other lead received and captured between the yokarm and the base when the core/terminal is inserted. A backstop for the yokarm is provided by a cover for the device which is mounted on the base.
