Patent number: 5300908Abstract: A high-speed impact hammer type solenoid capable of operating at high speed such as 500 to 1000 strokes per second and with a relatively long stroke length. It is housed in a cylindrical shell and includes two separate coils and magnetic circuits operating on a single short plunger. The plunger is driven magnetically in both directions. The short plunger has reduced mass. This is made possible by elongated backstops extending through the coils to the plunger and by a flux washer extending from the shell to the plunger. Close control of the plunger stroke is achieved by a non-magnetic sleeve surrounding the plunger and spacing the backstops which are screw threaded into the shell. Resilient anti-residual pads on each side of the plunger absorb the impact of the plunger with the backstop, start the plunger in the opposite direction and speed up the decay of the magnetic field.Type: GrantFiled: October 10, 1990Date of Patent: April 5, 1994Assignees: Brady USA, Inc., Deltrol Corp.Inventors: Richard S. Patent number: 5288025Abstract: An improved fuel injector for an internal combustion engine which produces highly accurate fuel delivery control by providing a precise closing of the valve without secondary openings caused by rebound or bouncing of the valve from its seat surface after initial closing. Valve rebound is eliminated by a hydraulic cushion formed between parallel surfaces of the movable valve and its stationary guide whereby a thin boundary layer of liquid fuel caught between closely spaced surfaces is compressed just prior to engagement of the valve with its valve seat. This generates an opposing force to the force tending to close the valve.Type: GrantFiled: December 18, 1992Date of Patent: February 22, 1994Assignee: Chrysler CorporationInventor: Mark S. Cerny

Patent number: 5271565Abstract: An improved fuel injector for an internal combustion engine with structure which produces a counterforce on the injector valve subsequent to valve closing to inhibit substantial rebound movement of the valve away form its seating surface as caused by the impact of valve closing accompanied by elastic deformation of a valve and its seating surface. The counterforce is generated by creation of a reduced fluid pressure between closely spaced and parallel surfaces, one on the movable valve and the other on the stationary valve guide.Type: GrantFiled: December 18, 1992Date of Patent: December 21, 1993Assignee: Chrysler CorporationInventor: Mark S. Patent number: 5243313Abstract: An E shaped stationary magnet/moveable armature combination for use in an electromagnetic contactor. The magnet has three legs; two outer legs and an inner leg. The armature can be a single, essentially rectangular bar or have three legs corresponding to the legs of the magnet. The moveable armature is caused to contact the magnet by a magnetic field created when electrical current is applied to a current carrying coil. An outer leg of the magnet and/or armature is arranged such that an air gap remains between an outer leg of the magnet and armature. The provision of an air gap in an outer leg reduces noise emitted from the electromagnet.Type: GrantFiled: September 16, 1992Date of Patent: September 7, 1993Assignee: Westinghouse Electric Corp.Inventor: Robert T. Patent number: 4716480Abstract: A dynamic lock for a disc drive carriage incorporates a plunger that captures an extension on the carriage. The plunger is guided by a solenoid and frame. The plunger is spring loaded such that it normally is biased into the carriage to restrain the carriage in the home locking position. The solenoid can withdraw the plunger and allow release of the carriage. A counterweight rotates about a pivot provided on the frame adjacent the plunger. A finger that protrudes from the counterweight rides in a recess on the plunger. In the event of a sudden shock to the disc drive, the shock force is transmitted from the plunger through the finger to the counterweight. The counterweight is designed to be of equal mass to the plunger, whereby the shock force is neutralized, preventing the plunger from moving back toward the solenoid and releasing the carriage.Type: GrantFiled: August 29, 1986Date of Patent: December 29, 1987Assignee: Seagate TechnologyInventors: John P. Patent number: 4706037Abstract: A solenoid contactor arrangement facilitates soft contact between the movable and stationary contacts and provides for overtravel of an armature in a manner which ensures that good and consistent electrical contact is maintained between the movable and the stationary contacts. The movable contacts are carried on an axially reciprocable armature assembly and are afforded limited axial displacement relative thereto. The movable contacts are biased by a coil spring to a first position on the armature assembly in preparation for engagement with the stationary contacts. When that engagement occurs, the movable contacts stop, the spring yields, and further displacement of the armature assembly occurs until a stop on it firmly contacts and is stopped by a corresponding stop on the movable contacts. The spring is formed and positioned such that it does not dimensionally interfere with the firm contact between the movable contacts and the armature assembly.Type: GrantFiled: December 22, 1986Date of Patent: November 10, 1987Assignee: Hamilton Standard Controls, Inc.Inventors: Robert E. Patent number: 4081775Abstract: The present invention is directed to an improved electromagnetic relay having means for eliminating the chatter or bounce of the relay armature upon the movement of the relay armature from its energized position to its rest position, that is, the releasing or returning movement of the relay armature. One of these counter forces is a frictional force generated by the abuttment of a bent flange forming part of each of the resilient strips against rigid mounting elements for mounting the two resilient strips.Type: GrantFiled: March 24, 1977Date of Patent: March 28, 1978Assignee: Siemens AktiengesellschaftInventors: Friedrich Rockl, Helmut Stocker, Gundokar Braumann
