  • Patent number: 10446488
Abstract: A novel fuse device incorporates electrically-conductive metal-filled vias that vertically connect frontside metal pads with backside metal pads through an electrically-insulated base substrate. The vias are initially created by drilling through the base substrate and then completed by filling the drilled vias with an electrically highly-conductive metallic substance. The vertical electrical connection between the frontside metal pads and the backside metal pads, established by the vias in the fuse structure, enables packageless integration of the novel fuse device to an electronic circuit by eliminating the structural need for wire bond pads and conventional leadframe or cavity packages. Preferably, each frontside metal pad of the novel fuse device is connected to an electrical terminal of the electronic circuit requiring fuse-based power protection, and each backside metal pad is attached to a printed circuit board (PCB) containing the electronic circuit for seamless direct mounting of the fuse structure.

  • Patent number: 9367110
Abstract: A computer planar includes an enable signal line for providing an enable signal to an external power supply, wherein the external power supply will not turn on unless the enable signal is active high. During normal operation, an auxiliary power source maintains an active high enable signal on the enable signal line, which includes a fuse. However, a fault protection circuit coupled to the enable signal line can pull down the enable signal line in response to a fault, such that the fuse is permanently opened. Once the fuse is open, the external power supply cannot be enabled and further damage to the computer planar is prevented.

  • Patent number: 7659804
Abstract: A fuse for a high voltage/high current application, such as a hydro-electric vehicle (“HEV”) application is provided. The fuse employs a variety of arc quenching features to handle a large amount of arcing energy that is generated when such fuse is opened due to a fuse opening event. In one embodiment, an insulative substrate, such as a melamine substrate, is metallized with a fuse element. The fuse element extends to multiple surfaces of the substrate. A fuse opening portion of the element is located so that the arcing energy is forced to travel along multiple insulative planes, increasing an impedance across the opening of the element and decreasing the likelihood of a sustained arc. Also, the substrate and element are disposed in a sealed housing, which is packed in one embodiment with an arc quenching material, such as sand.
