Publication number: 20120001721Abstract: A movable plate 8 is partitioned by a slim hole 23 into a narrow-width part 21 and a wide-width part 22. When a contact is closed as a thermal switch 10, the narrow-width part 21 produces heat with an applied current branched via a first terminal 3 and a second terminal 4, which short-circuits both ends of the current limit resistor, and the heat of a bimetal 9 is retained with a small amount of local heat to self-hold the non-restoration state, so that the current limit resistor is quickly cooled down. When the power supply switch is turned off, the heat produced by the narrow-width part 21 is quickly cooled down to restore the thermal switch 10 in a short time. Also when the power supply is again turned on in a short time, the current limit resistor is made to function efficiently.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 10, 2009Publication date: January 5, 2012Applicant: Uchiya Thermostat Co., Ltd.Inventor: Hideaki Takeda

Patent number: 4829281Abstract: The present invention provides an improved means of connecting the end of a bimetal blade, from which the bimetal flexes, to a planar member of a thermostatic switch. The bimetal blade, in response to temperature changes of the ambient, flexes to alternately establish circuit closed and open conditions of the switch. In a preferred embodiment, the planar member is a contact strip that overlies the basewall of a non-conducting case. The attachment provided by the present invention increases the cyclical life expectancy of the bimetal blade by locating a preloaded weld button against the one attached end of the bimetal blade in a press fit wherein a pressure, exerted by the weld button, prevents movement of the bimetal blade. A weld penetrates the planar member, the bimetal blade and the weld button to prevent relaxation of the pressure. In the connection of the present invention, the blade is held in place essentially by the pressure exerted by the weld button rather than by the weld itself.Type: GrantFiled: September 2, 1988Date of Patent: May 9, 1989Assignee: Portage Electric Products, Inc.Inventor: Omar Givler

Patent number: 4795997Abstract: Snap action thermostat has a housing molded onto two flat terminals to form a cavity wherein inner portions of the terminals are exposed. A contact arm is welded to the inner portion of one terminal, a dished bistable bimetal element is placed loosely in the cavity, and a fulcrum plate is provided thereover to bias the bimetal element against the contact arm in one of the stable positions to close the circuit. A mounting plate fixed to the housing provides a heat sink to ensure prompt temperature response.Type: GrantFiled: November 2, 1987Date of Patent: January 3, 1989Assignee: North American Philips CorporationInventors: David F. Patent number: 4791397Abstract: In a snap disc thermostat, a stationary contact support, a moveable contact support, an actuator translated by the disc and a case housing those elements, interior side walls of the case have guide channels outboard of the stationary and moveable contact supports. The actuator has a part substantially circular in section, extending within the guide channels, and a spherical part abutting the moveable contact support. The case has a closed top through which two contact terminals extend, and an open bottom through which the housed elements can be mounted. The open bottom is closed by an imperforate disc. The case has projections integral with the case, extending beyond the rest of the open bottom to center and retain the disc. A disc closure has recessed seats deeper than the projections, receiving the projections without bottoming, a flat surface within the compass of the seats, engaging the disc, and surfaces defining a plane outboard of the seats against which the disc closure abuts.Type: GrantFiled: June 30, 1987Date of Patent: December 13, 1988Assignee: Therm-O-Disc, IncorporatedInventor: Gordon K. Patent number: 4782318Abstract: A thermally responsive electric switch has an open ended, cup shaped, thermally and electrically conductive housing containing a thermostatic disc. A base of electrically insulative material, mounting a stationary contact arm, is received in the open end of the housing and captures an end of a movable contact arm between the base and the housing. The movable contact arm extends through a window in the stationary contact arm and has an opposite end disposed adjacent to the outer periphery of the disc and is adapted to be moved by the disc when it snaps from an unactuated to an actuated configuration to thereby control switch actuation.Type: GrantFiled: August 12, 1987Date of Patent: November 1, 1988Assignee: Texas Instruments IncorporatedInventor: Henry J. Patent number: 4780698Abstract: A resettable, current-responsive, circuit interrupter device has two wide but thin terminals embedded up to a substantial part of their thickness in a side wall of an insulating housing so that sides of the embedded terminal portions are exposed from the housing material along the side wall inside the housing. Terminal ends extend from the bottom of the housing to be connected in a circuit and extend through the top of the housing to be accessible for test purposes. An electrical contact is mounted on the exposed side surface of one embedded terminal portion and a thermostatic strip element is secured to the exposed side surface of the other embedded terminal portion to extend closely along the one housing side to normally engage the contact in a very compact, closed circuit position of the device. A lid overlies the thermostatic strip element.Type: GrantFiled: April 30, 1987Date of Patent: October 25, 1988Assignee: Texas Instruments IncorporatedInventors: Donald Tomkinson, John R. D'Entremont

Patent number: 4755787Abstract: The present invention provides, in a preferred embodiment, a thermostatic switch having a bimetal blade connected, at one end, to a terminal arm by means of a fastener. In accordance with the present invention, a weld electrically connects the one end of the blade to the terminal arm. The weld is located so that the fastener is located between the weld and a central, flexing portion of the bimetal blade. As a result of the placement of the weld and the fastener, weakening of the central flexing portion of the blade does not occur as is the case of a prior art connection in which the blade is welded to terminal arm.Type: GrantFiled: December 7, 1987Date of Patent: July 5, 1988Assignee: Portage Electric Products, Inc.Inventor: Glenn E. Patent number: 4754252Abstract: A bimetallic disc-actuated thermostatic switch comprising a switching assembly including a housing containing fixed and movable contacts and a cap and disc assembly on the switching assembly for moving the contacts between engaged and disengaged positions. The cap and disc assembly includes a bimetallic disc, a support disc for supporting the bimetallic disc on the housing, and a retainer cap for retaining the bimetallic disc on the support disc. The cap has at least one air circulation opening therethrough, and the support disc is formed so that air from the exterior of the cap can pass through the air circulation opening and across the underside of the bimetallic disc to provide increased responsiveness to ambient conditions.Type: GrantFiled: June 2, 1987Date of Patent: June 28, 1988Assignee: Elmwood Sensors, Inc.Inventor: Edmund F. Patent number: 4734602Abstract: A device for mounting a thermal overload protector to the motor of a hermetic refrigeration compressor. The overload protector is temperature responsive and is operative to protectively interrupt the current to the motor when the stator windings, rotor, or other heat source in the compressor overheats due to a compressor overload. The protector's mounting device is a plastic receptacle having a shield connected by an integral hinge. The hinge not only facilitates manufacturing the receptacle as a unitary part by an injection molding process, but also enables the shield to be opened for inserting the overload protector into the receptacle. The overload protector is held firmly in place by a U-shaped bracket integrally disposed inside the receptacle. A U-shaped groove runs along the inner edge of the bracket and is designed to slidingly engage protectors of various shapes. The receptacle includes an opening on one side of the protector opposite the heat retaining shield.Type: GrantFiled: February 24, 1987Date of Patent: March 29, 1988Assignee: American Standard Inc.Inventors: Bret R.
