    Abstract: A high-performance resistor includes resistor elements electrically connected in series and each having a first and second side and a first and second end. At the first end is a first connection and provided at the second end is a second connection for connecting the resistor elements). The first and second connections each have an inner portion and an outer portion. The inner portion of the first connection is bent at a predetermined angle with respect to the first side of the resistor element. The outer portion of the first connection is in a plane which is substantially parallel to the plane of the resistor element. The inner portion of the second connection is bent at a predetermined angle with respect to the second side of the resistor element. The outer portion of the second connection is in a plane which is substantially parallel to the plane of the resistor element.

Layers of electric insulation are attached to the base so as to sandwich the flexible resistor ribbon. Where the resistor ribbon is bent back on itself, for example, to form a snaking configuration, a strip of two-sided adhesive tape is attached to the layers of electric insulation and to the ribbon at multiple spaced points.

    Abstract: A layered electrical resistor having flat components stacked as follows: a first metal outer plate, a first thin outer electrical insulator, a first thin sheet metal resistor element, a first thin inner insulator, a metal midplate, a second thin inner insulator, a second thin sheet metal resistor element, a second thin outer insulator and a second metal outer plate. The stacked components are compressed together by rivets or otherwise. Each sheet metal resistor element is stamped, punched or otherwise cut with at least first and second terminals and interconnected ribbons forming a resistive path therebetween. A thermal fuse or other circuit breaker is thermally engaged with a seat on the midplate and is connected in a series circuit with the resistor elements to open the circuit to prevent overheating thereof. Structural tie bars are formed integrally with ribbons and terminals of the resistor elements and are severable therefrom before assembly of the components.

Further advantageously, the conductive strips are bridged by conductive regions that extend along lines of constant voltage. This makes it possible to handle the heater element without causing it to become tangled. The heater is especially suitable for low voltage applications.

There is a bottom electrical insulating member adjacent the U-shaped bends in the bottom group. Stop U-shaped pins having a pair of legs with a pair of shoulders are supported by the bottom electrical insulating member. The legs of each stop U-shaped pin extends into a pair of holes in the bottom group of U-shaped pins and rest upon the shoulders which are spaced from the insulator. Wire U-shaped pins are supported by the top electrical insulating member. The wire U-shaped pins have legs inserted into holes in the U-shaped bends in the top group. The U-shaped bends in the top group are spaced from the top insulator.

The heater thus constructed is mounted on the barrel with the resistor elements thereof being exposed on the outer surface of the barrel in circumferentially spaced relationship with one another around the barrel, so that each of the resistor elements is in direct heat transfer contact with the hair to be wound on the barrel, thus greatly reducing the heat loss to assure effective heat transfer from the heater to the hair.

The resistance foil material is in the form of parallel, continuous, longitudinal strips and transverse strips extending transversely to said longitudinal strips at desired intervals and connected thereto to form electrical connections between adjacent foil strips. The transverse strips extend substantially across the total width of the web and can be in the form of an insulation strip having flat foil conductive pieces on the insulation strip.
