Patent number: 8471728Abstract: A traffic management system and method are provided that determine and present a target speed for a vehicle to travel from a first position to a second position when a signaling device at the second position is in a desired phase. The target average speed can be presented via a variety of output devices, such as a display and/or speaker. The output device could, for example, be stationary, at a fixed distance from the signaling device, such as a roadside display. The output device could be a mobile device, carried in a vehicle or by a user, e.g., a cell phone, GPS navigation system, or personal digital assistant. The system can include a signal timing processor that determines a target average speed of travel between the first and second positions, which can be based on, or calculated from, timing information of the signals and a distance between the two positions.Type: GrantFiled: September 17, 2010Date of Patent: June 25, 2013Inventor: Michael Flaherty

Patent number: 8095311Abstract: When a vehicle passes through an entrance IC entering a toll road, a present position of the vehicle changes discontinuously because of increased detection error. Continuity is lost between a designated travel road and a history of past designated travel roads. Designation of a correct entrance IC fails. Even in such a case, the correct entrance IC is designated based on the travel road designated before the continuity is lost. A toll is calculated based on the designated entrance IC and an IC, which the vehicle approaches and via which the vehicle is assumed to exit the toll road. If a guide route is designated when passing through an entrance IC, a correct entrance IC is appropriately designated from the travel road and the guide route.Type: GrantFiled: November 13, 2007Date of Patent: January 10, 2012Assignee: Denso CorporationInventor: Yasuhiro Shimizu

Patent number: 7952491Abstract: Various approaches for a traffic control preemption system that includes a receiver, a light emitter, and control circuitry. The receiver includes a photodetector and circuitry that produces a number of electrical pulses in response to each detected light pulse. For each detected light pulse the number of electrical pulses represents a level of radiant power of the light pulse, and a threshold number of electrical pulses and an activation frequency at which the threshold number of electrical pulses is repeated activates preemption. The control circuitry is coupled to the light emitter and controls the light emitter to emit bursts of light pulses. Each burst includes at least two light pulses and a frequency of light pulses in each burst and a frequency of the bursts cause the receiver to produce at least the threshold number of electrical pulses at the activation frequency and activate the preemption.Type: GrantFiled: June 19, 2008Date of Patent: May 31, 2011Assignee: Global Traffic Technologies, LLCInventors: Mark Schwartz, Charles Meyer

Patent number: 7733242Abstract: An application for a traffic control system includes an enclosure for containing the traffic control system that has an access door with a lock for controlling access to the enclosure through the access door. The traffic control system has an automatic mode of operation and a manual mode of operation, whereas the traffic control system automatically transitions a state of a plurality of traffic lights when in the automatic mode of operation and cycles the state of the plurality of traffic lights in response to a change signal when in the manual mode of operation. An automatic mode activation switch is housed within the enclosure. Activation of the automatic mode activation switch changes the state of the traffic control system from the automatic mode of operation into the manual mode of operation. A watchdog timer is coupled to the traffic control system, The watchdog timer is reset when the automatic mode activation switch is operated and in response to the change signal.Type: GrantFiled: March 27, 2008Date of Patent: June 8, 2010Assignee: City of ClearwaterInventors: Paul Bertels, Himanshu Patni

Patent number: 5294138Abstract: A traffic control cart includes a rolling wheel assembly, a base fixed on the rolling wheels, a column mounted on the base, an arm pivotally secured on one periphery wall of the column, a light device including at least a green light, a yellow light, and a red light being mounted on a top face of the column. The arm is allowed to reciprocate in a ninety-degree range from vertical position to horizontal position, in the meanwhile one color of the traffic lights is "on" thus controlling the traffic therearound.Type: GrantFiled: April 5, 1993Date of Patent: March 15, 1994Inventor: Nan S. Patent number: 5252969Abstract: A temporary signal system wherein a pair of signal stands are installed at spaced locations adjacent a traffic restriction area. Each stand has at least red and green lights which light or flash for predetermined time periods to control vehicle traffic passing the restriction area. The signal stands include timers for counting actual time and providing the actual time, controllers for producing a flashing control signal for a selected red or green light upon reception of a time signal provided by the timer when the controller is in a flashing operation condition, and a lighting driver for permitting the selected red or green light to flash upon reception of the flashing control signal from the controller.Type: GrantFiled: June 18, 1991Date of Patent: October 12, 1993Assignee: Japanic CorporationInventor: Mitsuhiro Kishi

Patent number: 4433324Abstract: Priority is given to the movement of buses at intersections controlled by traffic lights, by lengthening the duration of the green lights on the street on which the bus approaches the intersection, and shortening the duration of the red lights, not only in response to the presence or absence of the bus, but also in accordance with the total amount of traffic on that street and the cross street. For each of the streets on which buses travel, there are provided "mini-green" programmer wheels which permit display of the green for two time periods of minimum duration on the relevant street, one time period corresponding to flowing traffic and the other to non-moving traffic. On each street where buses travel, there are also "time extension" programmer wheels, which permit setting of two time extensions of the duration of the green light on the associated street, again for flowing traffic and for non-moving traffic.Type: GrantFiled: April 10, 1979Date of Patent: February 21, 1984Inventor: Francis Guillot
