  • Patent number: 11968591
Abstract: In a method of maintenance of a location fingerprint database for an area, signal measurement data is collected together with motion sensor data from each of a plurality of portable devices transiting a portion of the area of the location fingerprint database. The motion sensor data is collected by a sensor assembly in each of the plurality of portable devices. Offline non-causal processing is used to process the collected motion sensor data into reference positions associated with the portion of the area. The collected signal measurement data is employed together with the reference positions to update the location fingerprint database.

  • Patent number: 11632679
Abstract: A cross reality system enables any of multiple devices to efficiently and accurately access previously stored maps and render virtual content specified in relation to those maps. Both stored maps and tracking maps used by portable devices may have wireless fingerprints associated with them. The portable devices may maintain wireless fingerprints based on wireless scans performed repetitively, based on one or more trigger conditions, as the devices move around the physical world. The wireless information obtained from these scans may be used to create or update wireless fingerprints associated with locations in a tracking map on the devices. One or more of these wireless fingerprints may be used when a previously stored map is to be selected based on its coverage of an area in which the portable device is operating. Maintaining wireless fingerprints in this way provides a reliable and low latency mechanism for performing map-related operations.

Abstract: When individual persons or vehicles move through a transportation network, they are likely to be both actively and passively creating information that reflects their location and current behavior. In this patent, we propose a system that makes complete use of this information. First, through a broad web of sensors, our system collects and stores the full range of information generated by travelers. Next, through the use of previously-stored data and active computational analysis, our system deduces the identity of individual travelers. Finally; using advanced data-mining technology, our system selects useful information and transmits it back to the individual, as well as to third-party users; in short, it forms the backbone for a variety of useful location-related end-user applications.

Abstract: Methods and apparatus are provided for determining and representing a location or position of a node in a network. When the node receives position measurement information from a reference node, the node generates, based on the position measurement information, a position probability space (PPS) which defines a space that encompasses possible positions where the node is possibly positioned in the network. The PPS includes a centroid (i.e., a set of coordinates), and a set of vectors which originate from the centroid and define the space around the centroid. The magnitude of each vector reflects the accuracy of the position in the direction of the vector.

Abstract: User-generated content that is associated with a geographic location is uploaded to existing networked services or directly to a digital map updating service. Distinct digital map updating services can be assigned to defined geographic areas, such that they are only notified of, or poll for, new user-generated content within their defined geographic areas. Utilizing the geographic location associated with such user-generated content, the digital map updating service identifies one or more digital map “tiles”, which are updated to include new user-generated content and capable applications on client devices can be notified directly of such new user-generated content if they are accessing the relevant tiles. Additionally, data mining can be performed and deductions of events from data mining can be indicated in the digital map in the same manner.

Abstract: In a system facilitating the calibration of a map-point grid for an indoor location, the grid includes several map points, each having a radio frequency (RF) data fingerprint associated therewith. RF data are received from a device associated with a user, and a map point is identified or determined based on, at least in part, the received RF data. A reliability of a fingerprint to be associated with the map point is computed based on, at least in part, a comparison of a parameter associated with the map point with reference data associated with the indoor location such as topology of the location, and speed and orientation of the user. A fingerprint is associated with the first map point based on, at least in part, the first RF data and the computed reliability. The computation of the reliability may also be based on additional RF data and location determination based thereon and/or user feedback. An existing fingerprint may be adjusted based on the received RF data.

Abstract: Systems and methods are disclosed herein for determining a user's location within an indoor environment. In particular, the system receives a location request including a set of radio frequency signal data collected by a mobile device inside of an indoor environment. Using this data set, the system first selects a map from a plurality of maps stored in a map database. The system then processes the data to identify the user's location on the selected map. The system uses yield information associated with the received signals in determining the map that the user is on, the user's location on the map, or both the map and the user's location to filter out transient signals and identify those signals that are reliably indicative of the user's location.

Abstract: Methods to improve the performance of passive coherent location by non-reliance on a direct view of the signal source are described. Passive Coherent Location, or PCL, has become a promising technology as more computer-processing power has become generally available. Basically, most PCL techniques rely on comparing signal sources with their reflections from an object in order to determine the location of the object. However, this requires line of sight access from the receiver system to the signal source which may not always be practical and may limit the performance of the system overall. The techniques described herein do not require line of sight to the transmitter sources.
