  • Patent number: 8970540
Abstract: An electronic device has a marking surface overlaid on a touch sensor. Marks made upon the marking surface create pressure that is transferred through the thickness of the marking surface to the touch sensor. Thus, the signals detected by the touch sensor correspond to the marks made on the marking surface. The marking surface may include a thin material that displays marks such as a pressure-sensitive cholesteric liquid crystal display or a conventional sheet of paper. The touch sensor may comprise a sensor capable of detecting an amount of incident force such as an interpolating force-sensitive resistance touch sensor. The electronic device may also have hardware and/or software to analyze the marks detected by the touch sensor and to communicate with other electronic devices.

In some instances, a touch-based stylus of the present disclosure is available to the user. The user touches the touch-sensitive area of the communication device with the touch-based stylus. The communication device induces a current within the touch-based stylus. This induced current causes a voltage to accumulate within the passive object when touched by the user. This accumulated voltage transfers to the touch-sensitive area when the touch-based stylus touches the touch-sensitive area of the communication device. Thereafter, the communication device compares signal metrics of various regions of the touch-sensitive area to detect an instance and/or a location of the touch from the touch-based stylus.

Abstract: A conductive brush, or stylus, for use with touch screen computing devices. The bristles or filaments are attached to an electrically conductive ferrule, so that even when the brush is pressed against the tablet to make the bristles splay apart, the conductive ferrule itself maintains electrical communication with the tablet. The brush thus allows users to conduct paint operations in an uninterrupted manner, even when its bristles spread apart. Further, this ferrule can be made removable so that users can swap out different brush heads quickly and easily. Additionally, the ferrule has at least a portion that is flexible, deforming visibly upon application of pressures commonly achieved during a typical painting operation. This deformation at least partially absorbs stresses on the filaments, preventing them from splaying apart excessively during painting, and thus helping to prevent loss of detection by the tablet and/or undesired visual effects.

Abstract: A stylus has a body portion and a tip portion coupled to an end of the body portion. The body portion defines a first cross-sectional area and is configured to be engaged by a user. The tip portion has a first end disposed adjacent to the body portion and having the first cross-sectional area, and a second end defining a second cross-sectional area different from the first cross-sectional area. The tip portion is formed from a flexible material that elastically deforms when placed in contact with a touch sensitive display to define an engagement surface that is input to the touch sensitive display. The engagement surface has a first size when the stylus is in a first configuration and a second size different from the first size when the stylus is in a second configuration.

Abstract: In some embodiments, a stylus device includes two switch mechanisms, one disposed at the stylus tip portion and the other disposed at the stylus end portion. The stylus device also includes a wireless transceiver that allows the stylus device to communicate back to an electronic host device (e.g., an electronic tablet) in response to a user contacting the surface of a host device with the stylus tip portion or the stylus end portion. This enables, for example, a wide range of dual stylus device functions for electronic tablet applications. For example, the stylus device can be used to write and/or draw with the stylus tip portion and then can be flipped to the stylus end portion to erase as a user would generally do with a conventional pencil on paper. In another example, the stylus device can include a marker color tip on the stylus tip portion and a color blender on the stylus end portion.

  • Patent number: 8941626
Abstract: A method for compensating electromagnetic inductive pressure level of an electromagnetic pen is disclosed. First of all, an electromagnetic pen is provided on a touch panel, wherein the touch panel has a sensor layer and at least one sensor coil on a transparent substrate, the sensor coil is located on the peripheral region of the transparent substrate and around the sensor layer. Then a signal amplitude of the electromagnetic pen is calculated and a pressure level value is calculated via a frequency of the electromagnetic pen. Next distances between the sensor coil and the electromagnetic pen are calculated to obtain the location of the electromagnetic pen. Then a pressure level compensation value is obtained from a pressure level compensation value table. Finally, a compensated pressure level value is obtained by adding the pressure level value and the pressure level compensation value.
