  • Patent number: 11486697
Abstract: A method, system and devices for optical structural health monitoring that implements digital image correlation (DIC) by applying an invisible pattern comprising a random dot pattern and/or codes, which is applied using a coating containing a dye or substance that is not visible during the normal lighting conditions. The structure is imaged at different time intervals by capturing images of the pattern and codes using a camera and suitable light source. The captured images of the pattern and codes are stored in a CAD file that represents the structure or part to which the pattern and codes are applied, and includes the locations of the pattern and codes. Comparative measurements of the pattern and codes (e.g., using DIC) determine one or more structural health parameters, such as strain, deformation, and other stresses or averse conditions that may be detected from one interval to another (e.g., between measurements).

  • Patent number: 11203207
Abstract: Improved manufacturing using a printer that deposits a liquid to fabricate a layer having specified thickness includes automated adjustment or print parameters based on ink or substrate characteristics which have been specifically measured or estimated. In one embodiment, ink spreading characteristics are used to select droplet size used to produce a particular layer, and/or to select a specific baseline volume/area or droplet density that is then scaled and/or adjusted to provide for layer homogeneity. In a second embodiment, expected per-droplet particulars are used to interleave droplets in order to carefully control melding of deposited droplets, and so assist with layer homogeneity. The liquid layer is then cured or baked to provide for a permanent structure.

  • Patent number: 8817317
Abstract: In one embodiment, printing, on a first side of a media, of a first plurality of plots and a plurality of associated fiducials is caused. For each of a second plurality of plots, using data from a sensor, a distance to one of the plurality of associated fiducials is measured to discern a reference for printing that plot on a second side of the media. Printing of the second plurality of plots on the second side is caused so that each of the second plurality of plots is substantially in registration with one of the first plurality of plots.

  • Patent number: 8807684
Abstract: A method of identifying defective nozzles of a printhead. The method includes the steps of: (i) instructing each nozzle in one ink plane of the printhead to print a respective coded line pattern, each coded line pattern being represented by a column of printed pixels and absent pixels, the coded line patterns being defined by first and second coding schemes encoding a position of each nozzle within its respective cell and a position of each cell within its respective ink plane; (ii) firing each nozzle of the ink plane to print a test pattern comprising a plurality of neighboring coded line patterns; (iii) imaging an area of the test pattern to obtain an imaged test pattern; (iv) decoding the imaged test pattern using the first and second coding schemes; and (iv) identifying the defective nozzles using the decoded imaged test pattern.

  • Patent number: 8721069
Abstract: A printing method for printing bars in a barcode by forming dots on a print medium. The method includes dividing the bars of the barcode into a plurality of segments, forming the dots such that a portion of bars in a first segment are shifted a predetermined direction relative to a portion of bars in a second segment, and printing the barcode by forming dots in each of the plurality of segments. The predetermined direction can be towards a least significant digit of information represented by the barcode when the barcode is seen from the front. In one embodiment, the plurality of segments equals three. Other printing methods, as well as printers for performing the methods, are also provided.

  • Patent number: 8714681
Abstract: An inkjet printer is configured to acquire gap variation information related to a variation of a gap between a specific portion of an ink discharging surface and a recording sheet as a function of an inkjet head position, the specific portion located within a usage nozzle disposed area where usage nozzle rows to be actually used are disposed, determine representative gap variation information related to a variation, as a function of the inkjet head position, of a representative gap representing actual gaps between the usage nozzle rows and the recording sheet, by multiplying the gap variation information by a correction coefficient dependent on a width of the usage nozzle disposed area in a head moving direction and a wavelength of a wave shape of the recording sheet, and determine ink discharging timing based on the representative gap variation information, assuming that the actual gaps are equal to the representative gap.

  • Patent number: 8657437
Abstract: A bar code printing device that prints print data including a bar code that has bars arranged in parallel in a main scan direction and spaces therebetween includes: a decoder that detects a point of change from a bar to a space based on bar code position information that indicates a position of the bar code in the print data and a data value for each line in the print data; and a data transfer part that moves up timing for outputting a drive signal for printing a bar immediately preceding the space and that outputs the drive signal, if the decoder detects the point of change from the bar to the space in the bar code.

  • Patent number: 8651656
Abstract: Haptic or tactile features, which are generally not visually perceptible or reproducible, are applied at varying positions on a substrate according to a predetermined scheme. A plurality of raised image areas are specified for a group of substrates and raised marks are printed in only one raised image area for each substrate in a manner that is evenly distributed between the raised image areas for the group of substrates. The substrates will present a relatively uniform stack avoiding localized large pile heights when the substrates are stacked. A clear marking material is used to print the raised marks so as not to obscure underlying data printed on the substrate. The clear marking material may include a monomer that may become cross-linked in an exposure process to resist deinking of the substrate. The clear marking material may be mixed with a phosphorescing or fluorescing material as an additional security measure.

Abstract: Improved product labels cannot be easily counterfeited. A plurality of small dots printed on the label are interpreted as dirt or flaw or misprint so that the counterfeit label will not reproduce the plurality of small dots. A first image printed on the label and having a first level of spectural reflectivity, and a second image printed atop the first image using ink having a spectural reflectivity different from the spectural reflectivity of the first image. A plurality of very small dots creates a grayscale field, and a symbol printed within the grayscale field of very small dots, thereby creating a watermark of such high complexity that it cannot be counterfeited. A symbol printed on the label, and a raised dot of ink printed atop the symbol at a precise location to be sensed by finger contact and thereby indicate the authenticity of the label.
