Abstract: A processor receives a print job, identifies possible extension marking materials to use to print the print job, and optimizes the order in which the extension marking materials will be used in multiple printing passes. A user interface outputs instructions to insert, into a receptacle, a first interchangeable supply container containing a first extension marking material that is in addition to base marking materials. A printing engine prints first markings (using the first extension marking material) that comprise a first portion of the print job. The user interface outputs instructions to return the partially printed print media to a sheet supply and to insert a second interchangeable supply container containing a second extension marking material. The printing engine prints second markings (using the second extension marking material) that comprise a second portion of the print job, on the partially printed print media, to produce the finally printed print media.

Abstract: An optical writing controller that controls a light source to expose a photoconductor and forms an electrostatic latent image on the photoconductor calculates a correction value for correcting a superimposing position where the developed images for different colors developing each of the electrostatic latent images formed on each of the multiple photoconductors are superimposed based on the detection signal output by a pattern detection sensor that detects a pattern for correcting the superimposing position, controls the multiple light sources to draw a predetermined pattern repeatedly in the sub-scanning direction so that stepwise patterns whose width in the main scanning direction varies with repetition are formed, and determines the width in the main scanning direction of the patterns for correcting based on the strength of the detection signal output by the pattern detection sensor.

Abstract: An image forming apparatus includes multiple light emitting elements (LDs) as a light source, controls the light source such that laser beams emitted from LD1 and LDN are sequentially incident on a BD sensor in a non-image-forming period, and measures a time interval between two BD signals output sequentially from the BD sensor. When image formation is performed subsequent to the non-image-forming period, the image forming apparatus controls the light source such that a laser beam from the LD1 is incident on the BD sensor. Furthermore, using a single BD signal output from the BD sensor as a reference, the image forming apparatus controls timings at which the LDs emit laser beams based on the image data, according to the measurement value of the time intervals between the BD signals.

Abstract: An image forming apparatus using the laser scan method or the LED method, which is capable of reducing a variation of spot diameter with a simple mechanism, and of forming a high-quality image by adjusting the density depending on the image resolution with a low cost. The image forming apparatus forms an image by developing an electrostatic latent image formed by irradiating a charged photoconductor with light emitted from a light source with developer. A detecting unit detects a distance between an attention pixel and an adjacent image that is adjacent to an image including the attention pixel across a white background. An adjustment unit adjusts a density of the attention pixel based on the distance measured with the detecting unit and a spot diameter of the light on a surface of the photoconductor.
