The image data are divided into 64 gradient sections, synchronized by shift clock signals, and transmitted in four cycles to the shift register. The optical shutter element is not turned OFF at the 64th pulse, but is continuously driven without transmitting to the comparator the standard clock signal of the 64th pulse, which controls the ON time of the optical shutter element. In this way, an image of a higher number of gradient levels can be represented using a driver IC of a low number of bits, thereby providing a solid state scanning type optical recording device which suppresses noise generation by reducing the load on the driver IC when driving at multi-level gradient.

Abstract: An optical modulation element is constructed of an electro-optic crystal substrate, which includes individual electrodes arrayed and formed one-dimensionally on one surface of the substrate and also includes a common electrode formed on the other surface in opposition to the plurality of individual electrodes. The portion of the electrode-optic crystal substrate, interposed between the common electrode and each the individual electrode, constitutes an aperture portion. The aperture portion is switched between a light-transmitting state and a light cut-off state by controlling voltage between the opposite electrodes. Light incident on the aperture portion in a direction perpendicular to the arrayed direction of the individual electrodes from one surface of the electro-optic crystal substrate is modulated.

Abstract: According to one aspect of the present invention, there is provided a printhead protective cover (50) which includes a shutter blade (60), an actuator (70) for moving the shutter blade (60), and a light trap (54) to prevent light from the printhead (12) from passing around the shutter blade (60). In one embodiment, a sensor detects a position of the shutter blade (60) and sends a signal to shutoff the actuator (70) when the shutter blade (60) is in an open position, or the shutter blade (60) is in a closed position. In yet another embodiment, the actuator (70) closes the shutter blade (60) in response to a tear in a web or failure of a dryer. In a further embodiment, the shutter blade (60) slides on a base plate coated with a low friction, non-volatile, non-liquid material, and the shutter blade (60) slides at an oblique angle on the base plate.

  • Patent number: 5414553
Abstract: There is disclosed a line printing system of this invention which utilizes an array of asymmetrical Fabry-Perot light valves for simultaneously transferring all pixel information of one raster line onto a photoreceptor. The number of elements of the light valve array used in this invention is equal to the number of pixels on a raster line. The pixel information is applied to elements of the light valve array in a parallel format with information representing each pixel applied to one elemental light valve of the array. The array is illuminated by a wedge-shaped incident light beam forming a focussed line image. Depending on the information state of each pixel, each corresponding element will be activated to absorb incident light or left in its neutral state to reflect the light. Light reflected by neutral elements will be directed onto the photoreceptor. In this fashion, the photoreceptor simultaneously receives the pixel information for the entire raster line.
