    Abstract: A local language is pre-stored in permanent memory. Equivalent data is transmitted in the vertical blanking interval (VBI) to television receivers. Each equivalent data set comprises a unique language identifier and a foreign language translation of, or graphical representative of, the local language pre-stored in permanent memory. The viewer selects the language to be displayed from an on screen menu with a remote controller. The selected equivalent data is retrieved from the VBI and stored in a RAM for future display. When the microprocessor calls up the text of a command for display, the equivalent data is substituted for the local language data so the foreign language version of the command can be displayed in a seamless manner. If no equivalent data is in the RAM, the local language pre-stored in permanent memory is displayed on the television screen in accordance with the normal operation of the microprocessor.

ChipT is attached to the authenticating product. ChipA and ChipT are compared using a secure protocol that utilizes secure authentication circuitry implemented in ChipA and ChipT. The secure protocol is mediated by a system that may be insecure. This has the advantage that the computing devices and software of the authenticating product are not required to be secure. Reverse engineering the authenticating product will not reveal the secret authentication key. This allows standardized highly secure authentication chips to be used, without requiring security to be implemented in a wide range of product specific microcontrollers.

Data can also be transferred from the monitor back to the host computer over the video connector.

The user is permitted to manually set the time on a clock only in an instance where the updated temporal information has not been detected past a specified period of time.

    Abstract: A device and method for displaying a broadcast program guide in a broadcast programmed recording system (referred to as immediate-K), wherein the method includes the steps of (a) loading a plurality of packets containing broadcast information among successively input data to periodically separate the broadcast program information therefrom, (b) comparing a current time with the start or end time of a next program from the broadcast program information separated in the step (a), and (c) displaying information of the broadcast program on a screen if the start or end time of the next program is a predetermined time later than the current time as a result of the step (b).

These capabilities are used to provide context sensitive groups of keys which may be defined to affect only selected applications running in a windowing environment. In addition, the remote control devices combine television and VCR controls with standard personal computer keyboard controls. A keyboard remote also integrates a touchpad which is food contamination resistant and may also be used for user verification. Included in the system is the ability to recognize verbal communications in video signals and maintain a database of such text which is searchable to help identify desired programming in real time.
