  • Publication number: 20020047920
Abstract: Data stored internally in a television system is modified conveniently. New data is stored on a video tape. A user of a television system simply needs to play the video tape on a video cassette player to change pre-stored data in the television system. The video signal resulting from playing the video tape is provided to the television system. The television system examines the received video signal to recover the encoded new data and uses the new data to modify the pre-stored data. For example, the pre-stored data may be replaced by the new data.

Abstract: Control information is processed in synchronism with audio and video data according to a protocol such as RTP (Real-time Transfer Protocol). In one embodiment, a payload handler receives incoming data packets and forwards them to either a data control filter or an audio packet handler. The data control filter determines whether the data payload contains video data or control information and forwards video data to a video data packet handler and data control information to a data handler. The data control information can include an action identifier field (e.g., containing a “display” command) and a data object field (e.g., identifying a file location in a memory) so that the data control filter can display the identified file with the presentation of the other video and audio data.

  • Patent number: 6091456
Abstract: The invention relates to a method and a circuit arrangement for producing an electronic program journal. The data of upcoming programs, contained in received television and/or radio signals, are evaluated and are stored and displayed according to specific sorting algorithms. The thus received and sorted data are displayed in the form of an electronic program journal. This data can be called upon for tuning the apparatus based on a simultaneous coordination of the transmitted data, such as channel data or frequency data, to the individual programs.

  • Patent number: 6061095
Abstract: An arrangement and method is disclosed for transmitting data items to a receiver for selective display on said receiver. The data items may collectively constitute an electronic television program guide or a database of products and services for electronic shopping purposes. By transmitting auxiliary presentation and navigation information, the information provider may determine how a receiver displays the data items and how the receiver needs to respond to user actions. Sometimes, however, it is desirable for a receiver to respond in a setmaker-defined manner, even if navigation and presentation data are provided by the setmaker. In order to solve possible conflicts between the information provider's interests and the setmaker industries' interests, the transmission includes a copyright bit which allows an information provider to indicate explicitly whether or not a receiver is allowed to ignore the transmitted presentation and/or navigation data.

  • Patent number: 6057874
Abstract: A system for delivering selective VCR control codes to programmable settop terminals over a CATV communication system includes a headend for storing and transmitting VCR control code information to the settop terminals and a plurality of settop terminals for receiving the control codes. The CATV communication system delivers the VCR control codes to individual subscribers within the vertical blanking interval of one of the broadcast channels or over a control data channel. A set-up procedure is required for each VCR to determine the appropriate set of VCR control codes. Upon determining the specific type of VCR the subscriber has, the VCR control codes transmitted through the CATV system are stored in the settop terminal in non-volatile memory. Since the settop terminal only stores the VCR control codes for a single type of VCR, memory requirements are minimized.

  • Patent number: 6052145
Abstract: A system is disclosed for providing programming and other information to television viewers for enabling them to control their respective television receivers. A central broadcasting computer and associated memory gathers and stores the information to be provided, and broadcasts it in a viewing area. An information receiver positioned in close proximity to the television is linked to said central broadcasting computer to receive signals representing said information from said central broadcasting computer. The received signals are converted video displays viewable on the television receiver's screen, and the user can use the displays to control the television receiver and other devices, such as video cassette recorders, used with the television receiver.

  • Patent number: 6016172
Abstract: A method of reducing a channel hopping time in an MPEG-2 system decoder which can improve the performance of a receiver by minimizing the response time in the event of changing the receiving channel. According to the method, a predetermined storage region is provided in a DRAM, and packet identifier (PID) values of audio and video signals of each program are stored in the storage region. Thereafter, if a receiving channel is changed, the channel-changing operation is performed using the PID values of the audio and video signals stored in the storage region, and thus the time required for the channel change is shortened, thereby reducing the channel hopping time.

Abstract: In accordance with the teachings of the present invention, a method and apparatus for automatically performing a function based on the reception of information corresponding to broadcast data is provided. In one embodiment, an apparatus includes a receiver to receive information corresponding to broadcast data, a control logic to compare the information to target data, and a programming guide to store programming information. The control logic accesses the programming guide if at least a portion of the information matches at least a portion of the target data. The control logic then performs a predetermined function based on accessing the programming guide.

Abstract: A single program descriptor is assigned to each program in electronic programming guide (EPG) data which is transmitted to home communications terminals in a communications network. A relationship is then separately established between these descriptors and criteria which may be used by a subscriber to search the EPG data for programs of interest to that subscriber. Data for defining this relationship is also stored in the home communications terminal. The subscriber may then provide one or more of the above-mentioned criteria to search the EPG data for programs meeting the criteria. The programs which are determined to meet the criteria may be displayed on the television of the subscriber.

  • Patent number: 6005598
Abstract: An apparatus and method for transmitting a broadcast program selection control signal, and controlling selective viewing of a broadcast program for a video appliance in which a viewing-restriction grade is set for a broadcast program and viewing of the broadcast program is restricted in accordance with the set viewing-restriction grade. According to the apparatus, the viewing-restriction grade of the broadcast program is determined and a control signal corresponding to the determined viewing-restriction grade is transmitted along with the broadcast program signal. In a television receiver, whether to admit the viewing of the received broadcast program is discriminated by comparing the viewing-restriction grade corresponding to the control signal with that predetermined by a user.

  • Patent number: 6002443
Abstract: The method and apparatus identifies selected broadcast segments, such as commercial advertisements, of a television signal in real-time for the purpose of muting the video and audio portions of the television signal during each unwanted segment. A signature pattern associated with each segment of the television signal is detected and compared to stored signature patterns representative of selected segments such as commercial advertisement segments. If the signature pattern matches one of the stored signature patterns, the segment is thereby immediately identified as being one of the selected segments and is processed in real-time to mute the audio and video portions of the television signal during the segment. If the signature pattern of the segment does not match any of the stored signature patterns, the segment is analyzed to determine whether the segment is nevertheless a selected segment and, if so, its signature pattern is stored along with the stored signature patterns.
