Abstract: A video display apparatus generates luminance information for individual frames of a video signal from histograms of the luminance component of the video signal, and classifies the content of the video signal on the basis of this information. Color saturation information is also generated from color saturation histograms, and scene changes are detected. Video correction parameters and display control parameters are derived from the content classification and color saturation information. The video signal is corrected according to the video correction parameters, and displayed according to the display control parameters. Display characteristics suitable for the video content are thereby obtained. The parameters are changed when a scene change is detected, so that the viewer is not disturbed by the change in video display characteristics.

Abstract: The invention is a method and apparatus for improving image-processing applications. Embodiments of the invention provide methods for preserving computation results and offer intermediary computation steps to allow the processing of images at any location to take advantage of previously processed image areas. The preferred embodiment offers a method for building a median filter that significantly improves the processing speed over basic techniques. By building a histogram hierarchy, image data statistics are added and subtracted using a multiplicity of histograms from the histogram hierarchy, where each histogram describes an image area. Furthermore, a histogram hierarchy is built using multiple layers, each layer defining a level of statistical resolution.

Abstract: An image processing apparatus includes a difference generation section and a histogram generation section. The difference generation section generates picture differences between frames of a moving picture in units of pixels, based on a present signal of the moving picture and a noise-eliminated frame-delayed signal acquired by subjecting the present signal to a process of eliminating noise and a process of delaying the present signal by one frame. The histogram generation section generates a histogram indicating a level distribution of part of the generated picture differences from which picture differences corresponding to pixels where a picture change not less than a threshold occurs are excluded.

Abstract: In a method of picture signal enhancement, a picture signal is subjected (3, 7) to a histogram-based picture signal modification based on a luminance level distribution over a whole picture or a first part of the picture, and the histogram-based picture signal modification is locally adjusted (5) in dependence on locally measured picture signal properties other than contrast and brightness, the locally measured picture signal relating to second parts of the picture that are each substantially smaller than the whole picture or the first part of the picture, the second parts being within the whole picture or the first part of the picture. Preferably, the second parts are individual pixels.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a method and corresponding system for improving the perceived visual quality of images for instance displayed on a colour television screen. According to the invention, there is provided a means for carrying out histogram processing (13) for scaling an input video signal (6) such that the maximum dynamic range is utilised and where the quality of the perceived image is also optimised. According to the invention, the histogram processing (13) provides a transfer function for the image pixels to obtain enhanced image dynamics and also to provide a chrominance gain (gc) for scaling the chrominance components, when the luminance has been changed by the histogram processing. According to the invention, the histogram processing can also take variations of the ambient light into account (5).
