  • Patent number: 9575340
Abstract: An electro-optic modulator for high voltage applications exhibits reduced corona and arcing by utilizing dielectric-coated electrodes in conjunction with a non-centrosymmetric crystal. The inclusion of an insulative coating (i.e., a dielectric material) on at least a portion of the electrodes reduces the possibility of arcing or corona, without requiring the application of any type of coating material directly on the crystal itself. Thus, the birefringent response of the crystal is not impacted by this coated electrode configuration of the present invention. In one configuration, the exposed surfaces of the electrodes are coated with an insulative material, while maintaining a direct contact between the electrodes and the surface of the crystal.

Abstract: An imager is shifted with respect to an optical axis of a refractive optical system. Thereby, a throw distance of a projector is shortened. A wavelength-selective half wavelength plate for rotating a polarization direction of green light beams is disposed between a dichroic prism and the refractive optical system in such a manner that the polarization direction of the green light beams is in parallel to the shifting direction. Thereby, the green light beams are incident onto the refractive optical system as P-polarized beams, whereby a transmittance of the green light beams in the refractive optical system is increased, while suppressing lowering of the light amount of the green light beams, and color non-uniformity resulting from lowering of the light amount of the green light beams.

Abstract: A projection-type 3-D image display device includes a single display element, a polarization conversion switch, a first image shifter, a second image shifter, a projection lens unit, a mirrored light tunnel, and a screen unit. The screen unit includes an image separation unit. The single display element emits light polarized in a first polarization direction according to an input image. The polarization conversion switch time-sequentially converts the first polarization direction of the light emitted by the display element into a second polarization direction. The first image shifter transmits the light having the first polarization direction to form a first image and refracts the light having the second polarization direction to form a second image. The second image shifter faces the first image shifter and is arranged apart from the first image shifter by a predetermined interval. The projection lens unit enlarges and projects the first and second images.

Abstract: A hollow sphere with a scattering (e.g., white diffusive) interior surface directs light input from at least one input light source to an exit. In one embodiment, an internal hot mirror and phosphor are positioned to intercept the input light on which visible light is reflected and ultraviolet light is directed to the phosphor for conversion to visible light. The exit has a reflective polarizer that passes light of a selected polarization to an output. Light of other polarization(s) is reflected back into the sphere where it becomes unpolarized because of reflections and may eventually be returned to the exit at the selected polarization.

Abstract: A projection system including a light source, a polarization conversion system, a reflection mirror, a color separator, a scrolling unit, a light valve, and a projection lens unit is provided. The polarization conversion system includes an incidence plane through which light emitted from the light source enters, and transmits a beam with a first polarization from the light entering through the incidence plane and reflects a beam with a second polarization toward the incidence plane and then changes the polarization of the reflected beam. The reflection mirror reflects the light emitted from the polarization conversion system through the incidence plane back toward the incidence plane. The color separator separates an incident beam according to color. The scrolling unit scrolls the color beams. The light valve processes an incident beam according to an image signal and forms a color picture. The projection lens unit magnifies and projects the color picture onto a screen.

Abstract: The present invention provides a high brightness color selective light modulator (CSLM) formed by a polarization modulator positioned between two retarder stacks. The modulator changes the apparent orientation of one retarder stack relative to the other so that, in a first switching state of the modulator the two retarder stacks cooperate in filtering the spectrum of input light, and in a second switching state the two retarder stacks complement each other, yielding a neutral transmission spectrum. Two or more CSLM stages can be used in series, each stage providing independent control of a primary color. One preferred embodiment eliminates internal polarizers between CSLM stages, thereby providing an additive common-path full-color display with only two neutral polarizers. Hybrid filters can be made using the CSLMs of this invention, in combination with other active or passive filters.

Abstract: An optical display system and method selectively displaces delta triad pixels vertically. The first raster line of picture information is removed from the video signal, and each subsequent raster line of picture information (data) is displaced upward. Next, the entire picture is optically displaced down by a distance equal to one vertical pixel pitch placing the picture back in its original vertical position, but horizontal position of the pixels has changed. Thus picture information is displaced horizontally a distance equal to one and one half times horizontal pixel pitch. Odd pixel rows are displaced in one direction, and even pixel rows are displaced in the opposite direction. The technique can be used to double pixel density and, thus, resolution, in the horizontal direction by the selective shifting technique and coordination with the input video signals.
