Abstract: A video channel change system may include one or more processors and a memory. The one or more processors may receive first packets including first video frames associated with a first video channel and second packets including second video frames associated with a second video channel. The one or more processors may decode the first packets and display the first video frames while buffering, in a buffer, the second packets. The one or more processors may determine that a packet of the second packets includes a random access point without decoding the packet, discard the second packets from the buffer that were received prior to the packet, buffer additional second packets received subsequent to the packet, and decode the second packets stored in the buffer and display the second video frames included therein, in response to a request to change from the first video channel to the second video channel.

Abstract: A method and a client-side Recommender system on One-Way Broadcast Network includes at least a one-way channel connecting a broadcasting station to a set-top-box device of a first set of users, the set-top-box including a memory, a computation and driving unit for tracking the user activity, storing a user profile, generating and displaying a ranking of recommended media items, the ranking being determined by the computation unit through a recommender model stored on the memory. The system further includes a collaborative dual module, a first back-end module running on a auxiliary server connected to a two-way network and belonging to an auxiliary domain, this first back-end module leveraging external data sources to collect community based information on at least part of the media items, while the recommender model stored on the memory being a second front-end module, wherein the broadcasting station and the set-top-box device belong to a target domain.

Abstract: A method and system for switching media streams of a video in a client system. A first media stream of the video is played in a SHOW mode in the client system as the first media stream is received from a content providing system. During playing the first media stream, an environmental change is detected within or adjacent to the client system and in response, a switch is made from playing the first media stream to playing a second media stream of the video in the SHOW mode as the second media stream is being received from the content providing system. After playing first media stream is paused, the switching may occur upon matching timecodes distributed in the first and second media streams, by transitioning playing the second media stream in a HIDE mode to playing the second media stream in the SHOW mode.

Abstract: A system and a method render internet multimedia content in a network using an application to render the internet multimedia content and/or locally stored multimedia content on one or more rendering devices in the network. The application may provide web browser functions, such as, for example, receiving, processing, decoding and/or rendering the internet multimedia content. The application may have an enhanced user interface which may enable a user to select the internet multimedia content and a rendering device in the network, send the internet multimedia content to the rendering device and/or control rendering of the internet multimedia content on the rendering device.

Abstract: A method and routing device are provided for aggregating of requests relating to a data segment of a stream into another request and for storing data segments belonging to different streams in a queue prior to the device routing them to client entities that have requested them. The method includes: determining a credit associated with a stream, the credit varying based on a number of requests transmitted by client entities and relating to data segments belonging to the stream; and, on receiving a data segment in response to the other request, and when memory space available in the queue does not enable the received data segment to be stored: selecting a stream having at least one data segment stored in the queue and for which the associated credit is the smallest; and deleting from the queue a data segment belonging to the selected stream.

Abstract: In one implementation, a computer-implemented method includes receiving, at a process risk classifier running on a computer system, a request to determine a risk level for a particular process; accessing one or more signatures that provide one or more snapshots of characteristics of the particular process at one or more previous times; identifying one or more differences between the particular process in its current form and the one or more signatures; accessing information identifying previous usage of the computer system's resources by the particular process; determining a current risk score for the particular process based, at least in part, on (i) the one or more signatures for the particular process, (ii) the one or more differences between the particular process in its current form and the one or more signatures, and (iii) the previous usage of the resources; and providing the current risk score for the particular process.

Abstract: Embodiments provide systems and methods for diagnosing a network and identifying problems in a network which reduce the data transfer rate of data through the network. One embodiment of a method for network diagnosis may include infusing data into a network upstream and downstream of a portion of the network relative to a library drive, querying the drive at intervals over time for drive data to determine the data transfer rate at the drive and comparing the data transfer rate of the data infused upstream of the device or network portion with the data transfer rate of the data infused downstream of the device or network portion to determine throughput. By comparing the data transfer rate of data infused upstream and downstream of a network device or network portion, problem devices in a network may be identified.

Abstract: Provided herein in some embodiments is a system and a method including a first client-entertainment module of a first mobile-computing device and a first client-entertainment profile associated with the first client-entertainment module. The first client-entertainment module can be configured to cooperate with i) a server-entertainment module on a server computer or ii) a second client-entertainment module on a second mobile-computing device to provide a seamless continuation of entertainment content at a specific point in the entertainment content on the second mobile-computing device. The first client-entertainment profile can be configured to track user interaction with entertainment content and features thereof to provide the specific point for the seamless continuation of the entertainment content.

Abstract: An apparatus, method, and system are described for transmitting a television program signal. A portion of a local frequency spectrum may be determined to be free, or relatively unused. A user selection of a television program or broadcast programming channel may be received from a program lineup in an electronic programming guide. The selected program may be selected from a gateway, translated, and transmitted over the portion of the frequency spectrum determined to be free. The translation may include converting a signal from the gateway into a National Television Systems Committee (NTSC) signal or a mobile TV signal.

Abstract: A video-on-demand (VOD) server in an Internet protocol television (IPTV) network with a network of set-top boxes includes IPTV operational data and an analysis module that selects a content item. The VOD server divides the content item into sequential chunks, divides the chunks into stripes, pre-populates set-top boxes in a peering network with at least one stripe from each chunk, receives a request for the content item, and directs each set-top box to sequentially stream its stripes. A method includes selecting a content item based upon IPTV operational data, dividing the content item into sequential chunks, dividing the chunks into stripes, pre-populating set-top boxes in a peering network with at least one stripe from each chunk, receiving a request for the content item, and directing each set-top box to sequentially stream its stripes.

Abstract: Methods, systems and devices are described to improve the storage and retrieval of video content. The general concepts set forth herein could be used in any video storage system that uses disk drives to store video content, including remote or local storage digital video recorders (DVRs) and the like.

Abstract: In accordance with an embodiment, described herein is a system and method for providing commercial (advertisement) detection in digital media environments. A media stream, for example, a video stream of television shows or movies, can be analyzed either in advance or in realtime, to determine commercial segments or blocks within the media stream, and to distinguish them from (non-commercial) content segments or blocks. In accordance with an embodiment, frame features, black spaces, cue points, or other segment or block information can be used to improve the accuracy and precision with which commercials are identified. Particular commercials can be identified, together with information as to the location of those commercials within the media stream. In accordance with an embodiment, the media streams can be used within an on-demand cloud-based media environment, which allows a user to select within a plurality of media channels, or to locate or skip particular commercials.

Abstract: A method includes sending, by a user device, a request for video content based on a selected video content chapter of the video content. The method also includes receiving video content information that includes a list of video content chapters of the video content. The method includes determining, for each listed video content chapter, whether the video content chapter has been previously stored on the user device. The method further includes downloading particular chapters of the video content in a priority order based on the selected chapter in response to a determination that the particular chapters have not been previously stored on the user device, and playing the video content based on the selected chapter.

Abstract: A method of reproducing at least two digital video sequences. The method includes multiplexing a first digital video sequence with a second digital video sequence, pictures of the second digital video sequence are included in advance in a video stream and are associated with timing information such that a receiver will not decode and reproduce the pictures of the second digital video sequence. The method includes composing the at least two digital video sequences into the video stream in correspondence with a result of the multiplexing and subsequently including a sequence of dummy timing pictures into the video stream. The dummy timing pictures are inter-predicted and are coded by omitting any prediction error data.

Abstract: A method and associated systems for automatically identifying critical resources in an organization. An organization creates a model of the dependencies between pairs of resource types, wherein that model describes how the organization's projects and services are affected when a resource type becomes unavailable. This model may include a system of directed graphs. This model may be used to automatically identify a resource type as critical if unacceptable cost is incurred by resuming projects and services rendered infeasible when the resource type is disrupted. The model may also be used to automatically identify a first resource type as critical for a second resource type when disruption of the first resource type forces the available capacity of the second resource type to fall below a threshold value.

Abstract: A system and method are provided for content-based non-linear control of video data playback. A multimedia database having multimedia data including multimedia content data is searched based on a user query to determine a first set of multimedia data. The multimedia data includes indexes to and condensed representations of corresponding video data stored in a video database. A portion of the first set of multimedia data is displayed at a control device in response to the user query. A user of the control device selects an element of the first set of multimedia data for video playback and video data corresponding to the element delivered to a video device for playback. A user of the control device selects an element of the first set of multimedia data for additional information and a second set of multimedia data corresponding to the element delivered to the control device.

Abstract: A method of enabling transport of symmetric latency-sensitive constant-bit-rate (CBR) client data streams over an optical transport network (OTN) is provided. The method performs, utilizing an OTN wrapping device, an OTN wrapping operation on a received first constant-bit-rate (CBR) client data stream to form a first framed OTN data stream. The method determines a static wrapping delay induced on the first CBR client data stream by the OTN wrapping operation, performs, utilizing the OTN wrapping device, an OTN unwrapping operation on a received second framed OTN data stream to extract a second CBR client data stream from the second framed OTN data stream, determines a static unwrapping delay induced on the second framed OTN data stream by the OTN unwrapping operation, and equalizes the static wrapping and unwrapping delays by adjusting, at the OTN wrapping device, at least one of the static wrapping and unwrapping delays.

Abstract: A rack-mountable computer system includes a horizontal divider that divides a chassis interior of the computer system into a first level and a second level. A plurality of electronic components are mounted on the first level and a plurality of electronic components are mounted on a moveable tray of the second level. The horizontal divider includes one or more elongated openings and a plurality of cables that pass through the one or more elongated openings. The plurality of cables connect the electronic components mounted on the first level to the electronic components mounted on the moveable tray. The one or more elongated openings guide the plurality of cables to slide within the one or more elongated openings as the moveable tray is moved into or out of the chassis interior.

Abstract: A content hosting system allows content providers to create channels of video content and make them available to users in a marketplace. Users can search or browse for channels of interest, and selectively subscribe to channels. Users can also pay for the right to view premium videos in each channel. The system ranks channels according to the value provided. Generally, users will seek out and subscribe to the highest ranked channels that provide the greatest value. The ranking function allows different providers to compete for the subscriptions of users. Providers can observe their channel's reception in the market by analyzing rankings and usage statistics to adjust channels to maximize channel performance. The system operator can also create bundled channels containing videos from multiple providers, and the resulting subscription revenue can be distributed to the various providers of the videos in the channel.

Abstract: A server device may receive a playback request that identifies particular content, a first segment file associated with the particular content, and a playback speed; and generate a playlist based on receiving the playback request. When generating the playlist, the server device may determine one or more second segment files, associated with the particular content, based on the playback speed and the first segment file; determine, based on the playback speed, a sequence in which the first segment file and the one or more second segment files should be played; and generate a list identifying the first segment file and the one or more second segment files. The list may be sorted based on the sequence. The one or more second segment files may be listed subsequent to the first second file. The server device may store or output the playlist.

Abstract: While a computer system is in operational state, a network interface controller (NIC) in the computer system may be operable to copy select data to a secondary storage device. The secondary storage device is accessible by the NIC while the computer system is in an offline state or not operational. The NIC may be operable to provide remote accessibility to the copy of the select data stored in the secondary storage device over a network while the computer system is in the offline state and the NIC is supplied with electrical power and active. While the computer system is in the operational state and whenever a change is made to the select data, the NIC is operable to replace the copy of the select data stored in the secondary storage device with an updated copy of the select data based on the change.

Abstract: Systems, methods, and computer-readable media are provided for generating and using models to select thumbnail images for videos. In one exemplary method, the method comprises extracting at least one thumbnail from a video and determining at least one feature present in the at least one thumbnail. The method further comprises sending the extracted at least one thumbnail to one of an editor or at least one viewer. The method further comprises receiving feedback information related to the at least one thumbnail. The method further comprises generating a model and storing the generated model for use in identifying thumbnails for other videos. The model can be generated based on the determined at least one feature and the received feedback information.

Abstract: Techniques are provided for transmitting high quality multimedia data from a mobile device for live and on-demand viewing. The mobile device adjusts the quality of a single multimedia data stream based on one or more factors, such as the available bandwidth of a wireless link with a server, whether there are any “live” subscribers of the multimedia data stream, whether any “live” subscribers are interacting with the mobile device, and a change in the privacy settings of the user of the mobile device. Any data that was removed from the multimedia data stream before it was transmitted to a server is subsequently sent to the server. The server generates multiple versions of the multimedia data stream that vary in terms of quality. The server selects which version of the multimedia data stream to transmit to a subscriber of the multimedia data stream based on one or more criteria.

Abstract: Provided is a packet forwarding structure for supporting network based content caching of aggregate contents. The packet forwarding structure includes: a forwarding table including forwarding information on a content in order to forward a request packet from a terminal; a request list table transmitting the request packet to a destination node according to the forwarding table when the request packet arrives; a content caching information table including the forwarding table, the request list table, and position information on where a content cashed based on a content ID or a content name is stored; and a content server function block storing the cached content.

Abstract: A method includes receiving a media request for a target device. The signaling information may be received from the target device and a media server. At least one attribute of the target device and the media server may be identified using the signaling information. At least one attribute of the target device and the media server may be evaluated against a service level objective to select a media format. The service level objective may include consideration of the target device and available bandwidth over a provider network. The media may be provided in the selected media format over the provider network to the target device.

Abstract: A video processing system includes a video device that generates a request corresponding to video content. A conditional access module generates a video signal for transmission to the video device during a first time period, and terminates transmission of the video signal when the request is not authenticated during the first time period. In a further embodiment, the conditional access module generates a video signal for unscrambled transmission to the video device during a first time period, terminates the unscrambled transmission of the video signal at the expiration of the first time period, and continues with scrambled transmission of the video signal after the first time period.

Abstract: A method for transmitting video data and haptic data between a mobile video acquisition device and a remote computer through a communication network, and a video acquisition device. A server capable of direct communication exists in the communication network. The video data can be presented on a screen of the remote computer for a user to view, and the haptic data can be used to control a motion state of the video acquisition device acting as an avatar of the user. In the present invention, a first channel for transmitting video data and a second channel for transmitting haptic data are established between a computer having access to the Internet and a video acquisition device having access to the Internet by using a server and through a P2P technology. The present invention enables forming of a low-cost long-distance avatar network of multiple users versus multiple avatars, thereby greatly reducing travel of people, and contributing to low carbon environmental protection.

Abstract: A system and method for session management of streaming media are provided. The system and method authenticate and validate any request for live or streaming video and manage the streaming session in a manner that continues to verify the validity of existing video streams with respect to new requests. The system and method provide for receiving a first request for a first video stream from a client, generating a token based on the first request and at least one parameter associated with the client, validating the token based on at least one predetermined rule associated with the client, and upon validation, providing the first video stream to the client. Upon receiving a subsequent second request for a second video stream, the system and method validate a second token based on the first video stream, terminate the first video stream and provide the second video stream to the client.

Abstract: Disclosed are methods and systems for displaying content recommendations to a television viewer. In one aspect of the invention, when the user changes channel, the system displays content recommendations to the user before going to the next channel. The recommendations are based on user profiles and/or aggregated multi-user content. In a further aspect, the user can decide on one of the recommendations (or answer a yes/no query) to migrate to the corresponding content.

Abstract: Provided is an apparatus and method for output voice, which receives an information item suitable to a user's taste among information items existing on a network such as the Internet in a text format, converts the information item into voice, and then outputs the voice. The apparatus to output voice includes an information search unit searching at least one first information item corresponding to a preset information class among information items existing on a network, an information processing unit extracting a core information item from the first information items in such a manner as to correspond with a preset reproducing time period, a voice generating unit converting the core information into voice, and an output unit outputting the converted voice.

Abstract: A system for preparing a first multimedia stream, for use with an environment comprising a repository for storing a plurality of tracks. Each track may be associated with at least one second multimedia stream. A track may comprise a single type of data (e.g., audio, video, etc.). The method may comprise receiving a request comprising an associated parameter (e.g., a position parameter) and determining at least two of the plurality of tracks associated with the parameter. The at least two tracks may have associated information that matches the position parameter. Responsive to determining the at least two tracks, the determined at least two tracks may be collated in order to generate the first multimedia stream.
