Patent number: 7905602Abstract: A polarization conversion system (PCS) is located in the output light path of a projector. The PCS may include a polarizing beam splitter, a polarization rotating element, a reflecting element, and a polarization switch. Typically, a projector outputs randomly-polarized light. This light is input to the PCS, in which the PCS separates p-polarized light and s-polarized light at the polarizing beam splitter. P-polarized light is directed toward the polarization switch on a first path. The s-polarized light is passed on a second path through the polarization rotating element (e.g., a half-wave plate), thereby transforming it to p-polarized light. A reflecting element directs the transformed polarized light (now p-polarized) along the second path toward the polarization switch. The first and second light paths are ultimately directed toward a projection screen to collectively form a brighter screen image in cinematic applications utilizing polarized light for three-dimensional viewing.Type: GrantFiled: September 28, 2007Date of Patent: March 15, 2011Assignee: RealD Inc.Inventors: Miller H. Patent number: 7883212Abstract: An image projection apparatus (100) comprises a projector (106), a frame (108), and a partially transparent screen (110). The frame (108) retains the screen (110) under tension, such that the screen (110) is inclined at an angle with respect to a plane of emission of light from the projector (106). The screen (110) has a front surface arranged such that light emitted from the projector (106) is reflected therefrom. The projector (106) projects an image such that light forming the image impinges upon the screen (11) such that a virtual image is created from light reflected from the screen (110), the virtual image appearing to be located behind the screen (110).Type: GrantFiled: April 1, 2004Date of Patent: February 8, 2011Inventors: Ian O'Connell, James Rock

Publication number: 20100321638Abstract: An optical illusion device such as a drinking glass/cup for providing a multi-dimensional visual display. The device includes a body with tubular sidewalls extending from an opening at a first end to an opening at a second end. A base assembly is provided at the second end. The base assembly includes a top wall, a bottom wall, and a sidewall that together form or define an inner chamber. A visual display assembly is provided with a mirror element with a convex reflective surface or mirror positioned within the chamber with the reflective surface facing the top wall of the base assembly. A primary image element is provided proximate to the reflective surface such that the primary image and mirror element can be observed via the opening in the body. A framing element is included proximate to the top wall of the base assembly including background images facing the reflective surface.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 30, 2010Publication date: December 23, 2010Applicant: DISNEY ENTERPRISES, INC.Inventor: Gary W. Patent number: 7845799Abstract: A projection-type three-dimensional image display apparatus includes a projector, a screen and an image former. The projector projects a plurality of element images containing parallax information to a two-dimensional plane. An image is formed on the screen, of a light transmittance that is electrically controlled by the projector. An image former forms a three-dimensional image having a vertical parallax and a horizontal parallax in a space in front of the screen from the projection image.Type: GrantFiled: June 30, 2010Date of Patent: December 7, 2010Assignee: Panasonic CorporationInventors: Takashi Kubara, Natsushi Ono

Publication number: 20100231860Abstract: As optical elements for bending a light beam when it passes through an element face constituting one plane, a plurality of unit optical elements for reflecting light on one or more mirror surfaces arranged perpendicularly or at an angle nearly perpendicular to the element face are disposed to constitute an optical imaging element. Light emitted from projection object disposed on one side of the element face is reflected on the mirror surface when it passes through the element face so that a real image is formed in a space on the other side of the element face where a physical entity does not exist, thus constituting a display equipped with the optical imaging element. An aerial picture projection system not existing heretofore is also provided.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 22, 2007Publication date: September 16, 2010Applicant: NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATIOInventor: Satoshi Maekawa

Patent number: 7771054Abstract: A display apparatus and an imaging apparatus constructed such that a high-resolution clear three-dimensional video image can be viewed from any direction. The display apparatus projects frame images, projected from a projector such as an electronic projector, to a video image projection surface of a three-dimensional screen through a polygonal mirror provided around the three-dimensional screen, thereby providing a polyhedral video image such as a three-dimensional image to a person viewing from around the video image projection surface. The three-dimensional screen has a view field angle limiting filter and a directional reflection screen. The view field angle filter limits the angle of a view field in the left/right direction, the angle being the angle of the projection on the video image projection surface (50) of the screen. The directional reflection screen has two sheets in horizontal and vertical directions.Type: GrantFiled: September 10, 2004Date of Patent: August 10, 2010Assignee: Hitachi, Ltd.Inventors: Rieko Otsuka, Takeshi Hoshino, Youichi Horii
