A raw 3D dataset is first processed into a viewable data with a geometry description in the form of a collection of scattered points, curves and surfaces, and a corresponding color description. One of the four color combination methods, exact, spatial, temporal, or spatio-temporal, is the used to process the viewable data into three data subsets, each of a collection of points and of a different color frequency. A set of separate image patterns, each pattern of a different color frequency, is then displayed on a color display system according to the content of the three data subsets. In the final step, the set of separate image patterns is recombined and displayed on a volumetric display device to form color volumetric 3D images.

  • Patent number: 5896231
Abstract: An apparatus is provided for magnifying a display surface of an indicator and forming an image of the display surface at a forward place distant from a driver and other passengers in a motor vehicle. The apparatus comprises an indicator (11), a concave mirror (15), and a half mirror (13). The concave mirror (15) and the half mirror (13) serve to enlarge an image (20) of a display surface (12) of the indicator (11) and form the enlarged image at a forward place distant from a driver and passengers in a vehicle. The apparatus is provided with a cylindrical lens portion (14) by which the magnifying power of the image (20) in right and left directions is set at 1.2 to 2.5 while the magnifying power in up and down directions is set at 1.2 to 1.6.

Abstract: A transparent thin-film EL display apparatus has a transparent thin-film EL element formed on a glass substrate. A rear substrate consisting of photochromic glass and the glass substrate on which the EL element is formed are disposed facing each other with the EL element located in between. A light-transmitting insulation material is inserted in a space between the two substrates and hermetically sealed. When the display on the EL element becomes hard to see due to light entering from the rear of the display apparatus, the photochromic glass reacts in response to the light and darkens the rear of the EL element, thereby blocking the light.

Abstract: A warning device for displaying information in a vehicle, particularly a motor vehicle, the warning device having a display of the information presented as a virtual image in a visible region of the windshield of the vehicle. In order to make certain that a warning information is transmitted with great persistence to the party to be warned, the invention provides that the information be mirrored into the windshield on a larger scale within increasing intensity of warning.

  • Patent number: 5461361
Abstract: An instrument panel projection apparatus is mounted on a pivotable steering column or the ceiling of the vehicle. A small steering wheel, preferably no more than twelve inches in diameter, is also mounted on the steering column. The instrument panel image is projected onto a reflection plate. The steering wheel, reflection plate and the instrument panel cluster are positioned so that the driver's sight line for viewing the image of the instrument panel cluster is over the steering wheel. Further, when the steering column is pivoted or telescoped, the steering wheel and the instrument panel cluster are also pivoted and telescoped, so as to continue to provide a sight line for viewing the instrument cluster over the steering wheel. The projection apparatus may include a lens system with a magnifying lens to increase the size of the projected image.

  • Patent number: 5457575
Abstract: A combiner is pivotally mounted for movement between an operating position in the line of sight of an operator and a storage position. A sector gear fixed to the combiner engages a slidable rack so that sliding the rack causes pivotal movement of the combiner. A control knob and stem are mounted for rotary movement and translation. A cam rotated by the knob engages followers on the rack to slide the rack upon knob translation or rotation. Knob translation effects movement of the combiner between operating and storage position, and when in operating position, knob rotation effects fine adjustment of the combiner to adjust image position.

  • Patent number: 5390625
Abstract: A driver's overhead indicator for automobile is a device using a reflecting plate in front of an instrument panel the image of which can be reflected through a secondary reflection onto a projecting plate which is installed on top of a dashboard. Both the reflecting plate and the projecting plate can be adjusted by a tightening member which is linked to a supporting frame, from which two stand members support and fasten to the body of the car. Said reflecting plate and said projecting plate were treated by a special layer of material such that the projecting plate maintains a clear background. The driver in a car can see the instrument panel from the projecting plate without looking at the instrument panel itself. This overhead indicating device can bypass the driver to look down at the instrument panel and avoid any possible accident that could arise while looking down.
