Patent number: 4379312Abstract: A system for the control and synchronization of magnetic tape and filmstrip in an audio-visual projector. Film is advanced by means of recorded advance tones on the magnetic tape which are detected by a tone detector to generate an advance pulse. An advance counter is incremented responsive to each advance pulse and decremented as the film advances each frame. The output of the advance counter actuates a film-advance mechanism unless the contents of the counter are zero, so that synchronization is maintained even if the rate at which the advance pulses occur exceeds the operating speed of the film-advance mechanism. Means are provided to automatically synchronize the tape and film at predetermined locations by optically sensing markers affixed to the tape and film. The system may also advance the tape independently of the film in either a fast-forward or a regular-speed mode or it may advance the film independently of the tape.Type: GrantFiled: January 12, 1981Date of Patent: April 5, 1983Assignee: Indal Corp.Inventor: Michael G. Patent number: 4165159Abstract: A microprocessor is utilized to monitor and control the operation of an image projector and a magnetic tape cassette player. Inaudible cueing tones recorded on the tape allow the recorded narrative to be kept in synchronization with the image projected. A sync counter within the microprocessor keeps track of the amount and direction by which the image and tape are out of synchronism. The microprocessor controls a visual indication to the operator that shows the direction in which the tape must be moved to regain synchronization. When the tape is moved forward to achieve synchronization, the microprocessor will stop the tape after the cue pulse that precedes the narrative for the associated image. When the tape is moved in the reverse direction to achieve synchronization, the microprocessor will stop the tape just beyond the cue pulse at the beginning of the desired narrative.Type: GrantFiled: March 28, 1978Date of Patent: August 21, 1979Assignee: The Singer CompanyInventors: John V. Patent number: 3963335Abstract: An audio visual reproduction apparatus utilizing an improved tape and film cartridge which is completely enclosed to be tamper-proof and to be used by inexperienced personnel. The cartridge includes transparent apertures therein for projecting light therethrough to view slide films on an endless disc within the cartridge. A dual track magnetic tape on an endless spool provides audio messages corresponding to the slides to be viewed and control signals for switching the slides to correspond with messages. The reproduction apparatus includes a single drive unit which drives the endless tape and film disc through a slip friction type drive. A cooperating brake insures that the film will be held stationary as the message is being played and allows for change in film through the tape drive upon the presence of a control signal to indicate requirement for switching. The tape, drive and brake are accessable through an aperture in the case covered by a removable shutter.Type: GrantFiled: June 5, 1975Date of Patent: June 15, 1976Inventor: Emory Horvath

Patent number: 3953120Abstract: A film strip projector which is provided with synchronized audio accompaniment. A film strip is framed with respect to a projection aperture by a selectively operable framing device. Once the film strip is initially framed, the film strip is advanced frame by frame by a Geneva type film advance mechanism. The audio accompaniment is carried on a dual track audio tape, one track of which carries the audio message pertinent to a particular frame and the other track of which carries a control signal for the film drive mechanism. All of the operative components of the film transporting mechanisms are mounted on a unitarily molded chassis. The chassis includes features for mounting a set of optics for easy removal and cleaning.Type: GrantFiled: January 9, 1975Date of Patent: April 27, 1976Assignee: Bell & Howell CompanyInventors: Frank C.
