Abstract: Light emitting diodes (LEDs) emit light at a first wavelength. A phosphor material close to LEDs converts at least some of the light to a second wavelength. The light at both wavelengths passes through a light collecting unit. A reflecting polarizer transmits both wavelengths in a first polarization state and reflects light at both wavelengths in a second, orthogonal, polarization state. Light reflected by the reflective polarizer is directed back towards the phosphor material without any substantial increase in angular range. The resulting output light beam contains polarized light at the first and second wavelengths. In some embodiments, an array of LEDs includes LEDs that emit light at a first wavelength and others that emit light at a second wavelength. The phosphor material is disposed on the LEDs emitting the light at the first wavelength.

Abstract: A liquid crystal display device constrains the injection of air bubbles in a cooling fluid into a display panel. In the display device, the cooling fluid is supplied to a receiving space of a receiving unit placed and opposed to a surface of a liquid crystal panel to which the light is emitted from a light source to thereby cool the liquid crystal panel. Namely, by a cooling fluid pump, the cooling fluid received in the receiving unit is drained from a drain port and the cooling fluid is supplied from a feed port to the receiving unit and received in the receiving space. In the above case, a part of a flow path of the cooling fluid supplied from the feed port is blocked by a flow path block unit placed and opposed to the feed port to thereby disperse the flow thereof around the flow path block unit.

A liquid-cooling jacket for cooling either one or both of the optical modulation element and cold mirror, which are the components that are to be cooled, one or a plurality of radiators, one or a plurality of reserve tanks, and one or a plurality of circulation pumps are connected together by piping. The components that are to be cooled are maintained at or below the prescribed temperature by circulating the cooling liquid through the system, which can further be separated at any position by couplers. By collecting the air that is generated in the cooling system in the reserve tank, idle running of the circulation pump can be prevented, and the effect of expansion and shrinkage in the volume of the cooling liquid can be mitigated.
